8/10 - Steam Deck Review
What a "hidden gem" ... literally. No idea why I've not seen this before. I search for "turn-based" games regularly and have never seen this. For that matter, I actually stumbled on the dev's upcoming game which led me to find this one. It deserves more exposure on Steam. Only 5 hours in so far but I find it absolutely beautiful, sounds great, and plays well (on Steam Deck). Not perfect, but I'd say it as "above par" for an indie game at this price. Being unfamiliar with this particular style of turn-based tactics, I would have liked more of an explanation of the mechanics. It took me a while to figure out things like how line-of-sight is an important factor. I was also beating my head against a wall for a while unable to beat a level before I realized I could go back a replay earlier zones to "grind" coins/cards to build better decks. Better "on-boarding" for new players would make the game better ... but not an insurmountable problem. It's just a shame this seems buried deep in Steam's algorithm because people are missing out on something really nice. EDIT (Follow-up): Took about 20 hours to complete ... although I will confess that I got stuck playing one level for quite a while because I wasn't sure what to do. Really enjoyed it and my opinion of the game just kept going up. It may deserve a replay or two! Played entirely on Steam Deck. I did change the right track-pad to "mouse" because I'm not of fan of trying to navigate with a d-pad. But that's all I changed.
Моё мнение, надо думать, очень интересно прощитать рандомный ход. Уровень шашек точно есть. Не нравится, перехлёст с другими по железу подключениями, надо вытаскивать УСБ под столом

You control 3 heroes that never change, each having a very limited pool of cards that typically aren't that exciting to play. Tactical battles present you with choices, but most end up being rather obvious. The biggest flaw of the game is that each battle feels the same, where low enemy variety contributes significantly to the feeling. Each level tries to have a new, distinct, objective, but it does little to add variety to the formulaic combat. The deckbuilding is minimal and most new cards are gotten through card packs (bought by in game currency) which often contain duplicates so you get stuck using the same deck for the next mission. Replaying missions is one way to get gold to buy more packs (aprox. half a pack of gold per mission), but this is a tedious process. That said, the tactical aspect is serviceable, as you still need to carefully use skill and prioritize enemies, yet it largely remains unvaried and shallow. Not bad, but there are better games for your time.
The positive
+ Ok combat + Has some story
The neutral
* Weird UI choices. For example, to see the description of the card you need to do a long click. * No resolution options for windowed mode.
The negative
- Combat can get repetitive - Slow progression - No way to increase speed animation
Conclusion:
Average game with shallow deckbuilding and progression and simple combat that often lacks variety. Mixed recommendation, 6.5/10.
Not too bad on sale, but pretty barebones. Overall I wouldn't recommend it, mostly because it doesn't feel well balanced and even early missions can drag. However I would recommend checking out others in the genre like Druidstone, Fell Seal, or Children of Zodiarcs that have more story, better balance and polish.
It's a fun little gem, I am surprised it has only this few reviews. I am enjoying it very much, especially because it's matching for my usual thinking-and-using-possibilites-wisely tactic, instead of the rush. I like as you can use the environment to your favor, you can trick the bad guys into traps with pushback cards or tricky kiting, or as you can whirlwind down your own people if you don't pay attention. The music is also very good, and while the story is not the strongest, the characters, the animations and the speeches are fun. This game should get more attention.
In this video I take a look at Ancient lands: the Tsar awakening a fantastic and challenging turn based strategy game. This is a very high quality title, with a nice story, fantastic graphics, and pleasant music. As for the game play, it's a terrific combination of strategy and card based combat. It's very addictive.
Ancient lands: the Tsar awakening is a tactical fantasy RPG that combines turn-based strategy with card-based progression systems to create a surprisingly engaging indie experience. Developed and published by Anatoliy Sidorov, the game follows a group of heroes fighting against spreading darkness and mysterious forces threatening the stability of their world. Although the game operates on a much smaller scale than major tactical RPG franchises, it succeeds through smart combat mechanics, meaningful strategic choices, and a gameplay structure that constantly rewards careful planning over brute force. What initially appears to be a modest indie project gradually reveals a surprisingly deep combat system that becomes more enjoyable the longer players spend experimenting with its mechanics. The tactical combat is easily the strongest aspect of the game. Battles take place on grid-based maps where positioning, terrain usage, and ability combinations all play important roles in determining victory. Players control a small team of heroes, each capable of using different weapons and skills represented through collectible cards. This card-based equipment system adds an interesting layer of customization because abilities are tied directly to the weapons and gear players choose to equip. Instead of relying solely on traditional RPG stat progression, the game encourages players to constantly experiment with different card combinations and tactical approaches to overcome increasingly dangerous enemies. One of the game’s more satisfying qualities is how heavily it rewards intelligent decision-making during combat. Charging carelessly into battle is rarely effective because enemies are capable of surrounding isolated characters or exploiting poor positioning very quickly. Success often depends on coordinating abilities carefully, using environmental hazards strategically, and understanding how different hero skills interact with each other. Some battles encourage defensive positioning and careful resource management, while others reward aggressive tactics and crowd control. This constant variety helps keep encounters engaging even when the visual presentation remains relatively simple. Enemy design also contributes significantly to the tactical depth. Different enemy types introduce unique attack patterns and abilities that force players to adapt their strategies regularly instead of repeating the same solutions in every fight. Certain opponents specialize in ranged attacks and battlefield control, while others function as durable frontline threats that pressure the player into repositioning constantly. Boss encounters are especially memorable because they demand full understanding of the game’s systems and punish tactical mistakes harshly. The challenge level can be unforgiving at times, but victories feel rewarding precisely because success usually comes from strong planning rather than luck alone. The progression system tied to cards and equipment works surprisingly well throughout the adventure. Unlocking stronger weapons and abilities gradually expands the number of tactical possibilities available to each hero. Players can specialize characters into different combat roles depending on personal preference, creating opportunities for experimentation with offensive, defensive, or support-focused builds. While the customization system is not overwhelmingly massive, it provides enough depth to make character progression feel satisfying from beginning to end. Narratively, Ancient lands: the Tsar awakening delivers a fairly traditional fantasy storyline centered around ancient evils, dark magic, and the heroes’ attempts to uncover the source of the growing corruption threatening the world. The story itself is straightforward and mostly exists to support the combat encounters rather than deliver deeply emotional storytelling. Character interactions and worldbuilding are relatively simple, but the game still manages to create enough atmosphere to make the adventure feel purposeful. The darker fantasy setting fits the strategic gameplay well and helps maintain a consistent tone throughout the campaign. Visually, the game clearly reflects its indie origins, but the presentation remains functional and readable during combat. Character models and environments are not especially detailed, and some animations can feel stiff during movement or attacks. However, the battlefield design generally prioritizes clarity, which is important in a strategy-focused game where positioning matters constantly. While players expecting high-end visual polish may be disappointed, the graphics are serviceable enough to support the tactical gameplay effectively. The soundtrack complements the fantasy atmosphere reasonably well with orchestral-inspired music during battles and quieter tracks during calmer moments. Combat sound effects provide decent feedback during attacks and ability activations, helping battles maintain a satisfying pace. The audio presentation may not stand out as one of the game’s defining features, but it supports the overall atmosphere without becoming repetitive or distracting. The game’s biggest weaknesses mostly stem from its limited production scale. Some interface elements feel rough around the edges, and the pacing occasionally slows down during stretches filled with multiple combat encounters in succession. Certain maps and enemy designs begin to feel repetitive over longer play sessions, and the overall presentation lacks the cinematic flair found in larger tactical RPGs. Players who prioritize narrative depth or highly polished visuals may struggle to overlook these limitations. The difficulty curve may also become frustrating for some players, especially those unfamiliar with tactical strategy games. Poor positioning or inefficient card management can quickly lead to failed missions, and the game does not always explain its deeper mechanics particularly well. However, players who enjoy strategic experimentation and methodical combat will likely appreciate the challenge rather than view it as a major flaw. What makes Ancient lands: the Tsar awakening stand out is the passion behind its tactical systems. The game feels focused entirely on delivering meaningful combat encounters and strategic progression rather than relying on flashy presentation or oversized open worlds. Beneath its modest visuals lies a thoughtful strategy game that consistently rewards patience, planning, and creative use of abilities. Ancient lands: the Tsar awakening may not redefine the tactical RPG genre, but it offers a satisfying and mechanically engaging adventure for players who enjoy turn-based strategy and card-based progression systems. Fans of smaller indie tactics games will likely appreciate the depth hidden beneath its rougher presentation, while players willing to invest time into understanding its systems will discover a rewarding fantasy strategy experience filled with challenging battles and tactical flexibility. Rating: 8/10
