A New World: Kingdoms is a 4X game that has some gamebreaking issues. *Updated for patch 1.2 You can find a about 13 minutes of gameplay with commentary here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yGZ5wMQly5M
-- Please note this vid was based on the release build and it seems the bugs I mentioned have been resolved. The AI still needs work. --
The story of this game is a bit thin, the information on the steam page is basically the whole game story. You control a Kingdom, with the goal to wipe out the opposing Kingdom. You can do this by either destroying the AI's main city, or by purchasing it for large amount of resources. This gives you the choice of concentrating on building your empire to gain resources quickly or raising an army... at least that appears to have been the idea. To start with the good - I like the graphic style. The low poly environment is nice and appears to be based on the same design of the last game this developer created. The game music sits nicely in the background, as does the ambient sounds. The units have a limited range of things to say and you will hear the same line over and over, but it was a good addition if the alternative was nothing. That's where it ends. I ran into repeated bugs which stopped the game turns from progressing. I would start a game, take my first turn and that was it. Quitting and restarting the game resulted in the same issue. After 5 restarts where the game wouldn't move past the 1st turn, I had to quit the program and restart it before it would move onto turn 2. Even then, the same thing occurred at about turn 5. As I type this the game is downloading an update that should resolve this issue.
-- This was resolved with Patch 1.1.
The blur option in the graphics that blurs out the map screen when you are in a menu is problematic. I found that if I started a game with this option enabled, everything would be blurred - always. I had to go into the options, disable and re-enable it to get the game running correctly. Eventually I just disabled the option, as on game restarts it would return.
-- This was resolved with patch 1.2.
The AI itself is a potato. In the few games that would keep going, the AI did nothing. It produced no units and didn't defend when I attacked. In the game I have linked above, it produced 1 unit in 19 turns - enough to delay the destruction of its city for 1 turn. I found no way to increase the difficulty of the game, so I have to assume that's as good as the AI gets. As someone who has not played 4X games in years, a tutorial would have been a good addition. The first dev video on steam appears to have a tutorial message, but I did not see an option to launch it in the game. I bought the game based on the graphics and because it had been so long since I played a 4X style of game. Unfortunately I was frustrated from the start as I had no idea what I was supposed to do, so it took me a few minutes of clicking to figure things out. It didn't help that I hit the turn bug which made me wonder what I had missed.
-- The tutorial section has been made clear with patch 1.2.
At the time of posting this, I cant recommend this game. Thankfully the turn bug has been resolved, and I expect the blur issue will be sorted quickly as well. But until the AI is improved, the game just offers no challenge. Hopefully the Devs can sort this out as well.
It looked interesting until I actually play it and to think I had it on my wishlist (I feel so embarrassed knowing it was there). What?? It's a full game release? After playing it, I thought it was still EA. Perhaps they made a mistake and are planning a pointless DLC. I don't see this game going anywhere but the trash bin. I don't know why the tiles are different looking, you just build everything on any tile. I couldn't tell if it was plains, hills or mountains, are there even mountains in this game? Does it even matter what I build where? There's no tile info anywhere. I don't know why you have multiple islands, you just need two, the AI's and yours. WTF, I could have sworn I turned off music in the last game. I move a worker onto a pine tile, can't build anything there, Had to remove the obstruction which was instantly done, then you can build anything but a lumber mill. I just could not build a lumber mill at all. The only time I was able to build one was in the tutorial. Are you sure this isn't EA? I see there's population in my city, but why? They seem pointless, they do nothing. Oh wait that's happyness, so what is the city population? Do I even have a city population? Only reason I have a farm is because I need food to build a worker. Same for the three units you can build in this game (warrior, archer, catapult) Excuse me, but why can't I build another town, not that I really need to. There is only one difficulty level. There is no fog of war, you immediately know where the enemy is, and it's always war. The day/night cycle adds nothing to the game and is just totally pointless and annoying. Rain is only graphical, it also does nothing. The biggest map size is 30 x 30 (explains why you're allowed only one city). All the AI does is build warrior after warrior, which I slaughter with an archer at sea. They completely ignore my units assulting thier city and just send them my way The Ai doesn't build workers since it doesn't improve it's city. THat's funny, I took damamge from attacking a empty improved tile. One unit per tile. I moved my unit on to the city tile, but nothing happened. Every turn you have to click attack, chose from 3 cards and then your unit eventually dies because it's can't heal. Oh and since you can't build lumber mills, you eventually can't build units. Also the tiles you improved become damaged for no reason other then to make it irritating for you. Oddly the AI doesn't suffer from damaged tiles. Sometimes improving a tile the worker is used up and other times it's not. Or it just dies, I don't know. No queue, everything is manual, wait, there isn't that much to the game anyway, guess manual is okay then. If this game was 99 cents it might be worth it. I got it in a bundle for a buck, so that means I over paid by one cent. Can I get that one cent refunded? Actually I think you should pay me to play this game. I played the tutorial some, got uninspired, played the game some, got more uninspired, took a nap from all the uninspiringness in this game and deleted it.
I bought this game because it looked kinda neat but honestly, every mechanic of this game is in Civilization already and it's done better there. Stuff I liked about the game: -The 3D effect of the raised hexagons is really neat and I wished they'd do this in Civilization too. Stuff I didn't like in this game: -The ability to move around the map with the mouse (or even just turn the map) was missing -There was no explanation of what icons mean (no hover-text in this game except for the building list for the workers) -Every time you click a worker or a warrior they answer with "Yes?" which gets annoying real fast.
Very unfriendly and confusing and that was just the tutorial. This game need a LOT more time in devloment before its ready to play. Not sure WHY this is not still in early access but in open release in such a state. I'll try this again in 12 months to see how it is then.
Lol the controls menu was straight up empty and none of the onscreen buttons worked in the tutorial
A New World: Kingdoms is an unusual entity in a sea of unremarkable 2D retro pixel platformers and asset flips at the bottom end of Steam. This is a genuine attempt at making a simple 4X game, a ripoff of Civilization (only not as good). Many of the same game elements are there, but in a more simplified way. Build your cities, warriors, workers, tile improvements, and build out an empire on a procedurally generated hex map. Civ was very successful, of course, so why not this ripoff? Well, for starters... it's simplified and also a lot clunkier than Civilization. Thing is... we already have Civilization. There's a basic unwritten rule in game development... if you're going to rip off someone else's game, you have to do better than the game you're ripping off. Not worse. The technical implementation is also a let-down. There's no options to change the resolution for the game, despite there being a small but welcome array of graphics settings. There's no way for gamers to ensure this is running at the native resolution of their displays... there's no guarantee this game will look right on any PC as a result of this hamfisted design decision. It's strange we get the option to set what kind of anti-aliasing we use, but not our resolution! The game features lazy low-polygon "retro" assets, making this look like a barely functional 3D game from the 1990s. It's unclear why the developers weren't able to arrange high quality, high polygon count contemporary assets for the game, and also irrelevant... what matters is that this looks bad as a result of their decisions, a compromise PC gamers shouldn't have to put up with. These technical defects push this game below acceptable standards for any modern PC game. A New World: Kingdoms didn't appeal much to the people who own a copy of the game, either. It has achievments, and they show us a very clear picture that the game didn't really capture any interest from gamers. The most commonly and easily attained achievement is for buying 5 tiles on the map (trivial to do), and only around 34 percent of players bothered to get that far before uninstalling the game, less than half the players. Hardly a success story, gamers just weren't all that interested in the game. A New World: Kingdoms has an overly optimistic price of around $4 USD, it's not worth it given the defects and shortcomings with the product, especially considering the sheer number of completely free, much higher quality games on Steam. I'm pretty sure Civilization games have appeared cheaply in numerous bundles and are sometimes given away free... so paying money for this is just out of the question.
The UI looks like someone threw up on the screen, the graphics aren't much better, and it seems incredibly limited and simplistic. I say "seems" because I can't actually get past turn 1. The game hangs right after I hit the end turn button.
Crashes upon switching to WIndows. Switches to Full Screen per level. VERY BUGGY, and abandoned. Achievements don't work either. Should be removed from Steam.
