An Occurence At Owl Creek Bridge is a 2D retro pixel "walking simulator", thematically and poorly ripping off the classic short story from Ambrose Pierce, and also famous for being the last of many great stories told by the 1960's cult anthology TV series, The Twilight Zone. All you do in this train wreck is walk to the left (and sometimes move up or down a little) to get through a badly hacked together vignette of the excellent, if brief, plot of the famous Ambrose Pierce story. There's no actual gameplay, and that was not the intent... this was designed from scratch to be an affront to all that is good in literature. To show the world that anything, no matter how great, can be made crap by incompetent, self serving would-be amateur "game developers". In a disgraceful insult to a great work of literary majesty, the game was made with obsolete retro pixel "art" as a substitute for contemporary PC graphics. It's unclear if this was due to lack of budget or talent, regardless, the overall visual quality of the game is extremely low as a result. The lazy, phoned in graphics, practically zero gameplay... with the butchered skin of a brilliant, emotional story plastered over it like a psycho cannibal wearing someone elses skin... this is not art. This is an insult of the gravest kind. This is where art dies. Perhaps the end of copyright and the shift of material to the Public Domain was a mistake, if it allows crap, incompetent "developers" to ruin genuine works of art in the way this does. We are, all of us, lessened by this "game".
Great story, great game.
I like the part when they hang the guy
Evidently, this was made with the idea of designing 100 games in 5 years, and yeah, it shows. Gameplay is hold right until end, and even that is a little janky. Story is what you'd expect, with some light notes of individuality. Visuals are the most fun aspect. Sadly, this short game, kinda overstayed it welcome for me, as the pacing is severely truncated in order to extend the meager length of the experience, or to accommodate the song that's in it. I had hopes when the game suggests you might need to run from yankees as they attempt your recapture, but it only has the appearance of danger. It's free though, so no harm no foul. If you want to kill 10 minutes, go ahead.
I really liked this but man that was a brick wall ending.
Short and well-written stories are quite good materials for game inspiration. "We play a soldier as they dream to make a daring escape", mainly about anti-war.
Never read the story before, but I can feel it's a dream because the bullet can't reach him and the enemies can't see him anyway.
