Handlung
Tristan (30) trifft auf einem Spielplatz ein verwahrlostes "kleines Mädchen" (Ambre), das er mit zu sich nach Hause nimmt. Insgesamt kann ich die Novel empfehlen. Do not play it has pedophilia themes. super gross
If you want to try it, here's what you can expect: you'll feel weird and disturbed during the first half of the game, but anyone can soon enough understand what's going on, specially if you've read the "Mature Content Description" specifying that "all characters are +18, 'Ambre' does not exist". However, also expect some struggles while reading. Though the game is really short - it takes about 1 to 2 hours to read - sometimes the text is so expositive that it feels like you're reading a personal opinion, not a story. The point is, I like stories like this. I really enjoy stories where the characters, or even the narrator, take their time to express complex opinions or thoughts, so the reader can fully understand their view on the subject or the concept approached. In this game, however, I felt like it wasn't well made since these expositions of opinion were so uninspired. Even during a philosophical monologue, we need to be moved forward by the ideas discussed and the way they are exposed. Now, here's some spoilers:
I can understand what the writer tried to do with the childish depiction of Ambre during the first part of the game and anyone can understand she's not a child at all very early in the game. I don't think this is story should be called a "pedo bait" like other comments since it's clearly not what it tried to do. Though, can we notice how, even though an approach is comprehensible, it's not always good? I mean, if you need to spoil the entire plot twist beforehand in the game's description, it shouldn't be used as a plot twist from the very beginning. Different from games that just say "hey, we'll have some hard topics here, take care", if I need to explain or even give my entire point before reaching it, maybe I should go for another thing. Depicting Ambre as a child and revealing she's not one later would be a good idea if it wasn't done the way it was. That's because the child depiction should make us feel empathy toward her, but in this case, it doesn't - specially because the entire narrative makes us feel uneasy. Tristan takes a random child to his place and never contact the cops; Tristan think about licking her lips, but try to hold the urge to do it; Tristan kiss her and take her to bed. Can you notice how this break the entire empathy and just give us a terrible vibe? The tool that should be used as a way to empathize turns to be weird, unsettling and even disgusting. In this case, two things could be done: one, mantaining the idea of Ambre being depicted as a child, but focusing more on making a wholesome story and later revealing that she's not a child, so we could truly feel this twist; or two, showing from the very first scene that Ambre is an adult and, through her childish behavior, talking about the topic discussed in the game. Honestly, the first option is ok but the second one if my favorite. Not everything need to be a plot twist, a "aha, I got you!" story. Simple approached can be even more deep and useful if they're well done. I don't have any problem with the game showing Tristan's point of view, his suffering, even his sinful thoughts about wanting to abandon her just to see that nightmare ending. This is actually good since it created character for him too. However, it turns into a problem since the main aspect of the game - Ambre - is not fully developed. The game just say "the society did this to Ambre" without asking why this happened or how this happened. The entire game was built around the idea of a society pushing their ideology into people, but this is not well depicted.
I hope to read more things from this author and watch their development through their works. The game is not that bad, it just failed in some executions - but everyone fail and I honestly don't see bad intentions coming from this game nor from their developers. I hope the devs keep going with their games and trying new things and, more than anything, taking criticism lightly on their hearts but serious to their craft.
I've had this in my library for quite a long time and finally decided to give it a go. I can't express how much I wished I had looked over the description before diving head into it. My main issue was that the vast majority of the story, from an uninformed perspective, comes off as completely pedophilic. While it wasn't the intention, that was all I could see, having not been aware prior. I begrudgingly dragged myself through the story desperate for something to redeem it and technically I got that, but it didn't do much to ease the discomfort that had been building in me as I continued. While Ambre is not physically a child, she sees herself as one mentally which makes her and Tristan's relationship very uncomfortable. Regardless of the reality, indulging her more adult desires while she still sees herself as a child is still very wrong. All in all it was fairly well written with only a few typos and the art was clean and well made, but I cannot stress enough how important it is to know the premise beforehand. I think putting the mature content description/warning at the beginning would be highly beneficial for both the reader and the image of the creator(s).
Just no. This game was weird,
Ambre - a heartbreaking kinetic novel
