Tips for linux users: You need
-screen-fullscreen 1
to run this game in full screen mode. If you're on wayland and not xorg,
-force-wayland
to activate wayland support. Review: The music and the cinematics came together really well. The interactive storytelling reminds me of Life is Short by Interactive Haiku. The only few drawbacks of the game: The interactivity reminds me of old visual novels from the 90s, and you have to click through everything to move forward. There is a significant memory leak issue, potentially due to artworks not being unloaded from the memory after the scene is over. Overall, very decent.

I think the game does a good job of showing what it might feel like to live with Alzheimer’s. But when it comes to the gameplay, it felt a bit rough. The point-and-click system isn’t very intuitive. No indicator when you interact with something, so I got confused a few times. The musical puzzle, especially. Even with the hint, it didn’t really help much. It took me a while to realize that the notes played twice, they just stay highlighted, they don’t get clicked twice or flash on and off. The idea behind the game is meaningful, but the execution needs more polish and better user-friendly.
**NOTE:** This review is part of my steam curator review and is the extended version. Check my steam curator page at https://store.steampowered.com/curator/39607348-Random-Game-Reviews-by-Labprofess/ . Follow appreciated! — Alzheimer’s: Memories is a game about an old man diagnosed with Alzheimers, who is now trying to remember various aspects of his life such as his friends and family. Follow the “old man” from his perspective of how he views his reality and dreams. See how reality morphs in your mind and experience, the day to day life of a Alzheimer’s patient. I personally don’t know anyone with Alzheimer’s , but I met someone with Dementia of which I understand certain experiences of the game which are very personal to me. It's interesting to know how reality changes completely for some people, something we as “outsiders” can struggle to understand. This game is a must play if someone you know is struggling with Alzheimer’s or another form of memory loss, but also just to learn about what Alzheimer’s is and how it affects the person who suffers from it. The gameplay is perfect. The art style is unique and I love it. This game uses minimal lines that wobble to give the impression of a distorted reality with lack of remembering details. The graphics are perfectly clear and can run on even the worst PCs (Game specifications apply). The game also uses minimal bright colors, possibly giving the impression of a distorted reality with some remembrance? Not sure on the interpretation. Something notable is that the constant white background can become hallucinating after a while and before you realize, you’re not blinking at all with foggy gameplay. So be sure to blink throughout certain levels and not sit too close to the screen. Lastly, to summarize this review, I want to mention some drawbacks I noticed. First, this game doesn't have a proper home screen. It has one when you start the game, however during the game, if you leave (whenever you leave, it saves!) it quits to the desktop which is a bummer. Second, when you complete the game, (no spoilers here) after it displays the credits, the game simply goes to the desktop. Would be nice to have a home screen it returns too. Now moving too if you should play this game: depends. There's lots of symbolism. The amount of symbolism and interpreting what certain actions in this game mean give me English High school flashbacks. Hence this game might be enjoyable to English students or those into those types of ‘deeper’ games? However, if you aren't into that, this game might be hard to enjoy due to missing out on a lot. What makes this game also interesting is to those that know someone or want to understand Alzheimer’s more.
An interesting concept but flawed in execution. There are a series of mini games, each one a memory, where you find things to progress the story, The visuals are as simple as seen in the store page but they do get the message across. Unfortunately, the music and memories I have experienced were light-hearted, while the game-play was frustrating. Understandably, with a condition like Alzheimer's, finding things or recognizing what actions you should take is a daily challenge. If that were the intention, perhaps it would have been on point. But even the hitbox of the word Start in the menu gave no feedback it was hovered or being clicked on, so it is a technical issue, not a design choice. Hovering over lines to check if the cursor changes and continuously clicking for things to register, while happy music is playing was a jarring experience. Another issue with the music was present in the musical puzzle. The notes did not align with the sounds, making what would have been a trivial simon-says like puzzle a chore. There were visual hints of which musical notes were used, but unfortunately some notes were highlighted continuously despite being pressed twice. So paying attention to the out of synch musical score was needed to figure out if it was a double or simple click. The mini game which ruined it all for me was the dog memory. After spending minutes not knowing why I was stuck in a loop, I quit the game and, fortunately enough, saw this exact memory in the trailer. After I restarted the game I could confirm that I was missing one clickable item the first time, which didn't allow me to progress. There are other casual black and white games with fun mechanics of finding. There are games which help you find the characters past and reveal more interesting stories. If the mechanics of this game were user friendly, perhaps I could have at least reached the end of this one.
Alzheimer's: Memories is a selection of mediocre mini-games and puzzles, presented badly, with the intention of simulating dementia, which is a debilitating and progressive disease not to be taken lightly (or exploited for profit as the developer is doing here). The puzzles are lame and uninteresting, as is the rest of the game, married with poor technical delivery and lazy, phoned in visuals. Trying to address social issues through the medium of video games is misguided and can be harmful. While it's plausible to suggest the intention was noble, this can do more harm than good. Game developers are not professionals in areas of mental health and social problems, and when they use video games to pretend they are, this can cause far more harm than good. It's my opinion that it's improper to use video games to push political or social agendas. Apart from the harm such hamfisted attempts at addressing social problems can cause, this offers zero benefit to PC gamers. People suffering from health issues or other social problems should seek out professional help rather than going to crap shovelware video games attempting to get sales by exploiting such problems for their own benefit, as is the case here. From a technical perspective, the game doesn't meet basic minimum requirements that most PC gamers expect as standard. The visuals in this game are a complete joke, it's seriously just a bunch of minimalist MS-Paint line drawings that look like they were lazily scrawled out over the space of a couple of hours. Like, with the mouse, it doesn't look like they even used a Wacom tablet or anything. It's so bad even pixel "art" would look better than this. Pure MSPaint. Developers must learn that gaming is a visual medium. If they fail to understand this, their games fail. It's unclear if this is due to lack of budget to arrange someone who can create graphical assets properly, or lack of talent, regardless, the overall visual quality of the game is extremely low, enough on its own to deter gamers. There's no option to change the resolution and no useful graphics tweaks. There's no way to ensure this is running at the native resolution of your display. There's no guarantee this game will look right on any PC as a result of this hamfisted design decision. Arrogantly, the developers demand you should find a way to plug headphones into your gaming PC to experience the craptastic audio they shovelled into this terrible game. I run a 9.2 surround sound system for my gaming rig, I'm not interested in downgrading just because the developers demand I experience the game in a compromised manner. Developers must never dictate to gamers how a game should be consumed, it's their JOB to ensure a game is experienced well on any gaming rig. Failure to do this is a failure on their part, and not the gamers. The controls can't be customised because the game has such a dumbed down, simplified interface that it's just point and click stuff like a browser/Flash game. The fact that the interface is this dumbed down might be seen as a problem in itself, however... this is a fairly shallow experience if you're the kind of gamer that likes to play games with deep, rich control schemes and interaction. You'll get none of that here. These technical defects push this game below acceptable standards for any modern PC game. The poor quality of this game is reflected by how many people spent time with it. At the time of this review, SteamDB shows the all-time peak player number was only 6 players. This is a remarkably low number, and now, the only player activity occurs once or twice a month, presumably someone loading it up to see what it is then quickly uninstalling it. Considering there's over 120 million gamers on Steam and well over 100,000 games for gamers to choose from, the overwhelming lack of interest in this low quality game is to be expected. So, should you buy this game? Is this one of the best of the 100,000+ games on Steam? Alzheimer's: Memories is relatively cheap at $1 USD, but it's not worth it. Given the defects and quality issues with the game, coupled with the unrealistic price, this is impossible to recommend. This is also competing with over 11,000 free games available on Steam, many of them far better than this paid product.
Profile Features Limited! Valve have marked this game as "Profile Features Limited" at the time of this review. This is usually caused by poor sales figures and low community acceptance for the game (to date). Until this status changes, this game will not give you +1 to your Game Collector badge count, appear in profile achievements or any other Steam meta-accomplishments, nor can it be displayed in some profile showcases. If these factors are important to you, it may be worth holding off before buying this game.
absolut unnötig und dumm
