Expecting a cool space adventure? ...you won't find that here.
Alpha-Nighthawk starts off strong, and then drops everything it sets up in the first 20 minutes, and turns you into a kindergarten caretaker (sadly, not kidding). Instead of having a good story, the game just focuses on setting up 18+ scenes, and is not enjoyable... and you need a free patch to see those. And while I'm not a fan of these scenes, there are ones that are plot-relevant, usually when one character is changing or showering, while still holding a conversation with someone else in the other room. Couldn't keep playing after the only way to save someone from bleeding out was to **** their ****. I came looking for a good story... left disappointed. Not recommended.

Full review (with score): https://youtu.be/B2E3EX64xfE Written review below!

ALPHA-NIGHTHAWK kinda came out of nowhere and I’m surprised it hasn’t received much attention given it's by Liar-soft. Having now played it... Well, let’s just say there is a good reason this one hasn’t got much attention. Note: Trimmed to fit Steam, check video for full version!
Art and Visuals
Starting with the good: the art style. The characters are full of color, have some solid linework, and just generally have great designs all around. I liked the kind of “splatter” color design that you can see in each character’s hair and elements of their clothing - it’s a distinct way of giving the game its own style and this is something that Liar-soft generally does a good job at. The color choices too, they are both vivid, yet match the sort of dark sci-fi setting that the story goes for. That said, the style comes with one severe flaw: it’s mismatching with other styles. You get these absolutely gorgeous and colorful 2D sprites and then they are slapped next to these mechs that look straight out of another game with a different art style entirely.
Story and Writing
The writing and overall story here is all over the place - starting off with some minor info dumping before rapidly changing scenes and introducing characters without hardly giving the time to really learn about these characters or the world they find themselves in. The pacing in general is probably my main issue. It goes from stupidly fast during scenes that are actually important for the main story and then these scenes are followed up with something incredibly slow and oftentimes straight up unnecessary, like the numerous random cooking and eating scenes just kinda thrown in there. Not to mention the insane tone shifts. There was literally a scene where a character goes from scraping gore out of a cockpit to another scene where important plot info is being given while a character projectile vomits, followed up with an entirely too lengthy scene where the two main characters enjoy ice cream at a local shop and it’s all fluffy and happy. Which is a disappointment really. The setting here is actually somewhat interesting - being this near future sci-fi with mechs, weird creatures roaming about, and some absolutely wild societal structure - it just doesn’t utilize it to its full extent. And even then, a lot of the info that you do learn about this setting comes from info dumping scenes instead of naturally learning it like a properly paced visual novel.
Characters
This is one of those shorter VNs that tries to bank a lot of the experience on its characters and the climax, but they are simply not given the time to properly flesh out and allow me to form a connection with them, leading to an unsatisfying climax and an ending that hardly made me feel anything but relief that the experience was finally over. The romance between the two main characters, for example, comes out of nowhere around halfway through and after that point it felt like I was watching a relationship speedrun that existed more out of obligation than actually wanting to tell a proper romance story.
Technical Issues
I don’t know what it is, but I had this constant freezing issue, where I would be reading and then suddenly my inputs would do nothing and all I could hear was the music - forcing a game restart to continue where I left off. At first I thought this was an issue with alt+tabbing out of the game, but it started happening when I was straight up just reading normally. It happened like 20 times throughout the entire reading experience and was just a pain to deal with.
Overall
ALPHA-NIGHTHAWK may have some solid artwork, but the rest of the experience is an absolute slog to get through and a disappointment given the interesting setting it starts off with. The pacing, constant tone shifts, and lackluster character development killed any impact the story was going for and left me feeling practically nothing by the end of it. freezes every 15 min Boring and too simple story with 2 good characters. Slice of life scenes were better than main story. Weak, really weak mecha fights. Also it probably have the worst final battle from everything I've seen. 5\10

GHS
Finished both this and the sequel game in Japanese and bought it one more time to support the release. Alpha-Nighthawk is a fun, stylish space opera/hard SF with classical mecha battles. The length (8 to 10 hours to complete) makes it very approachable and action-packed. Main characters are charming and have good chemistry (also, canon OTPs) and you just would want to support them both in love and battles :) I enjoy Liar-soft VNs a lot and very glad more of them are being released in the west, so I hope other games will come along^^
Mech VN + amazing visuals/sfx + high quality = An interesting story of a former elite military pilot in the lawless Tokyo. Fully voiced with engaging characters. Make sure to grab the 18+ patch. Steam Deck note: This game runs fine on the Steam Deck except that the opening and ending movies do not play. When the game reaches the point where they should be, it will seem to freeze, and a few minutes later it will progress to the next scene. Just be patient if it seems frozen; maybe take the opportunity to go look up the videos on YouTube instead. With that said, this is a really neat little sci-fi visual novel. It has an interesting, creative setting, a cool cast of characters, some good character development over the course of the game, and a really unique art style. It's also a purely kinetic novel; there are no choices or routes, just a single play through. It's also notable for having several furry characters; I wouldn't call it a "furry visual novel," as there are still plenty of human characters, including the male & female leads, but there's a good variety of character designs. If that sounds interesting to you, I'd recommend giving it a try. It's also worth noting that the original release of the game has quite a few scenes with explicit R18 content. The Steam version cuts all of those out; it simply skips over the scenes in question. It's a shame because the game does have a serious story outside of that, and those scenes have quite a bit of lore and character development in them, so skipping over them makes it feel like you're missing a good chunk of relevant information and many scenes feel short and choppy. Even if you're not interested in the explicit content, it's worth looking up how to restore those scenes.
ALPHA-NIGHTHAWK is definitely a small hidden gem of a sci-fi visual novel. It's not likely going to blow you away, but I think anyone reading it will feel a good appreciation for a game that just seems to be doing its own thing within the genre. In the artstyle, the tone, the character and mecha designs, the game just feels as though the developers got the freedom to make what they wanted. The story is supported by an interesting surface to its world and a likeable main cast. The hero Ichizou doesn't buck mecha protagonist tropes as the jerk-with-a-heart-of-gold veteran rogue pilot, but there's a heart of character development is in the heroine Miriya who aspires to be a military pilot herself. The supporting cast of friendlies full of so many small adorable talking animals and friendly robots it's hard not to feel protective for them, even while resisting the urge to root for the very attractive villains. The plot and worldbuilding have a few interesting pulls, the majesty of a giant poisonous space rose DOES flare up the imagination, but the narrative roles of these elements never get to reach too deeply in the scant ~10 hour experience. In contrast, if you are playing with the erotic content patched in, some of the worldbuilding seems to bend towards specifically making the world more erotic rather than speaking to the core plotline. But in that regard, this work is the rare eroge that seems to actually wants to be erotic: sexily clad dominatrix villains and beastmen-in-heat colliding getting into mecha-conflicts over an alluring cosmic horror bouquet. In the end it does leave room for wanting more for the world, but with an upcoming sequel that outlook is actually more exciting than it is disappointing. The artwork of the game is unique and as free-spirited as the story, with indulgent character designs and outrageous color palettes for the main cast and CG's. Sometimes it stands in contrast to more traditional looking backgrounds, but at no point does the game look ugly. The audio of the game is also good quality, with good voice work and decent music throughout. As for the performance, when I originally played this game at launch via the Johren release, I had issues with crashes frequently. Now playing the Steam release those seem to have either been fixed, or they aren't an issue with the Steam/All Ages release. I can at least assure you that buying the current Steam version will be a stable experience. The game has the basic options you'd at least expect for visual novel releases, though fullscreen mode cannot minimize. An easy recommendation for anyone wanting a more bombastic and less self-serious mecha action VN.
