DO NOT BUY STARTER PACK. OFFICIAL SERVER’S DOWN, BUT THERE’S A WORKAROUND. More details on this below. WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW FIRST ────────────────────── The game's official server is down. The developers lost the source code for the server, but they showed a workaround to connect to a new server in the forums. I also have the information inside my guide. It's easy and straightforward. Play Akaneiro: Demon Hunters Again with New Server https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2509083693 Now, micro-transactions are disabled in the new server. That means that you won't be getting the bonuses from the starter pack. Again, do not buy the starter pack. DEVELOPERS / PUBLISHER REVIEW 👎 ───────────── As much as I love American McGee’s Alice games, he and the team at Spicy Horse dropped the ball on this one. The game launched with bugs and performance issues. And some of the promised features weren’t implemented (in this current version I'm seeing so far). I think they also spread themselves thin trying to publish on multiple platforms from Steam to mobile to even browser. Furthermore, we don’t know when or if the new build is ever going to come. The developers have the client source code, but they lost the source code for the server. GAME REVIEW 🤷♂️ ────────── So far, to be honest, I am quite enjoying myself despite it being repetitive and not having enough attack patterns and variety. The game is not as good as Torchlight 1, but it is a pretty okay dungeon arpg hack-and-slash if it didn't have so many bugs. Playing on the harder missions make the game more challenging and fun since it forces the player to use the skills. However, the high ping can ruin this experience, especially when there's the feeling of huge delay from your actions and your character suddenly dying. The systems around the microtransactions are hurting the game, especially since they're disabled and there's no new update to rebalance the game. The game was designed to heavily nudge the player to buy microtransactions by locking the ability to level up armors/weapons and attempting to make the player want to spend shards to revive immediately than after like 4 seconds. The atmosphere and the art direction are great and are what carries the game. The art is similar to the Okami games and World of Demons. I just wish the textures were much sharper. The music gets boring to listen to after a while. There are a lot of bugs I encountered, but it's not too game-breaking. The big one for me was my character not leveling up; I had to restart or reinstall the game. Enemies just clip through the environment’s objects. Rarely one of them gets stuck. Another annoying one is that your spirit helpers don't retain their level. I don't know if that's intentional or a bug, but these helpers can make the experience easier. The minimap sometimes has the enemies’ triangle painting over the minimap, making it hard to navigate. You can't call back your companion spirit even when summon time haven't expired. So it's best to remember not to log out and only summon the spirit for an hour, not for a day or week. The game is in need of quality of life improvements. For example, the scrollbar doesn’t work when you try to hold it and drag it down or use the scroll wheel. You have to drag the window’s content instead. And the QWE toolbar doesn’t save your consumables’ position. You will have to re-drag your potions in the slot each time you launch and enter the game. There is some notable tearing occurring in the game and there’s no vsync option available. The game could also use hotkey rebinding. There is only 1 new attack pattern shared by bosses on harder missions and it's nothing special. The game can get boring because the story has too little variety for the large amount of missions. Nevertheless, I still enjoyed the game. This could've filled that Diablo 1/Torchlight 1 itch. This game deserves a remake, especially due to its art direction.

Amazing experience waiting for you.
Unfortunately dead game that never really lived up to what it was aiming for.
the concept was ahead of its time, and there definitely weren't enough resources for it. McGee tried to combine Diablo with Okami, and create a game-as-a-service before that became mainstream. like what happened with Bad Day L.A. and Grimm, he came up with a brilliant idea, but at the wrong time and with flawed execution. he also had this reputation that made him an easy target for haters. some people just love to hate on someone famous for no reason. it was tough for him. i was one of the Kickstarter backers and bought the artbook, so i did what i could. but let's be honest - Akaneiro wasn't good enough to survive back then. but today, on smartphones? maybe. sometimes we fail. that's ok.
(ツ)_/¯ Akaneiro: Demon Hunters

THE GAME STILL WORKS! This absolute madlad explains how to get the game to launch again/connect to the servers! Good luck you guys! https://clips.twitch.tv/ShinyVainPepperSoonerLater
The Good: It was a great concept... a Dark Fantasy/American McGee/Feudal Japanese spin on Red Riding Hood. It was an action RPG in an gorgeous world with distinctive art. You could hire pets to help you as you ventured along. The Bad: It's Dead. R.I.P. Press F. The Ugly: It was backed on kickstarter, which caused development hell, fan backlash, developer backlash, and eventually the unceremonious demise to the game in every form... which ultimately killed the studio that made it. Spicy Horse is Defunct as of 2016. Any version of this game may no longer exist, and that's a shame to the backers who supported the project, and the devs who put in the work creating and attempting to polish the game. The Beautiful: I guess you can still find the concept art and enjoy that...
This game "could" have been good for its time. The concept is there, the art style is attractive (subjective), the core mechanics aren't too far off from what would have been a decent online hub-based dungeon crawler. Despite the negative reviews saying "You can't run the game" if you go to the steam community discussion for this title, the singular remaining dev wrote a workaround that allows you to play as of now. If you are truly interested in playing this game, I suggest reading that (its no longer than this review). That said all premium purchases (with the exception of the "Starter Pack" listed on the store page) are listed "out of stock" and cannot be purchased. Score: 3/10 Good: Art-style, Mechanics, Japanese ARPG (BIAS) Bad: Netcode. "Official" server is down. Error handling. May require reloading after some play time. Neutral: No premium purchases (outside of Starter Pack).
Found a snapshot from the 1st day launch of this game on Facebook back a decade ago in one of my ancient folders on the old PC and out of nostalgia gave the game name a search and it pops up on steam... wondered if the game is alive.. but apparently it's dead. I never really play this game more than 20 minutes back then on Facebook, was quite enjoying Spicy Horse's games up till Crazy Fairies.. but this one is a big no, and their games kinda fail in one straight line after this one... none of the game produced by their studio are a hit. The legends Mcgee created are often with other people and team.. example the Alice series he made with EA (and EA owns Alice's ip) and the original Doom series where he's part of the crew. But that's just it, this guy has really weird vision and ideas, but not everyone is able to understand and sync with his mind when he's the one in full control on designing a game... though i can't believe i am saying this... Mcgee is a good example that not all Indie games made with love is accepted wildly, and a good example that cold blooded calculative marketing team is needed for a game company to succeed... As much as i love his Alice series... we have to admit the fact that he has 0 talent in marketing and absolutely no clue on how to research and invest on trends and stuffs the audience wanted. When someone else is in overall control of the game making, and he's one of the main crew, they make great games. But when he's fully in charge... well... we have seen the results... and yeah... he pretty much showed the gaming industry new and innovative ideas isn't always the good way to go... which i really hate to say, since i am loving how doujin/indie maker making games with love, especially their 1st games... and often use that as my measurement when getting a game to play. And most are fun and worth more than the price. While the commercial one done with professionalism and fully researched marketing tactics are well... dull and boring. But i guess, we need a balance between those 2 scenario somehow for a great game to emerge and become a great hit. Even though I never really liked this game since their day 1 launch on Facebook and only played like 5 minutes after character creation... but that's not a reason i am giving it a thumb down here, the reason is simple, their server is dead but they are still selling DLC that the players can no longer use. This type of scamming practice is not a professional game maker should up hold... bad bad practice! Booo!
