Obviously pretty janky, but it's free so we'll call it a learning experience. The art panels were surprisingly great, there were a couple of really neat drawings with a unique art direction, even though the gameplay didn't really complement the visual experience due to various platforming issues. I will say I liked the gameplay ideas (in theory), on paper you could see a similar power-up design in some modern metroidvania right, you can either use the flowers to keep the light around you, or you can use them for offense and interactions with the environment. Also that animation when activating the flowers was pretty neat, if the actual platforming tiles didn't look so plain, I would say the game was very beautiful overall. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3718030129 I mean these are very nice, maybe you should do a visual novel instead, #### I'll buy it, love the colors. It feels like adding gameplay was a bit out of your skill range, perhaps doing something like a graphic adventure would play more into your strength, like a choice matters experience, there are a lot of visual novels out there, but they don't look like these panels, I think it would stand out. The game is only like 40 minutes, I only have 4 hours in it cuz I forgot to turn it off. The first thing I noticed is that the button mapping felt very strange, I'll touch on that in the feedback, there could be some improvements. Other superficial issues I noticed was just lacking sound effects for many basic interactions like hurting enemies, or sometimes not having a sound for abilities like the spinning attack. The knockback in the game was too heavy, you generally don't want it so strong in platforming games, and sometimes I could not tell what was hitting me. In the snow level the lantern was not in my hand, I could not tell if it was a narrative thing because the animation looked the same.
Pros:
(+) The story panels were very pretty, you probably would have a better chance making a commercial visual novel or a graphic adventure because the art style really stands out. The character animation and the activation on flower abilities looked pretty as well. The only thing that didn't look great were the platforming levels, and just plain looking platform tiles. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3718027390 (+) Even though the gameplay was very janky, I do like the ideas behind the mechanics, use the power-ups for light or special attacks, as well as some progression elements
Feedback:
Random Things: - there were many actions that needed sound effects, enemies taking damage/hurting, or sound effect for the blue flower disk, anything that happens on the screen should make some type of sound, any interaction with attacks or visible abilities - maybe speed up activation of flower abilities if you can - knockback was pretty heavy, it's never good in platformers when you bounce around too much, hitboxes were a bit too muddy and I could not always tell what was hitting me or where I should stand Controls: - this is subjective, but I think you could at least make A also scroll the powers instead of just D, both ways - down for "interact" is kinda unusual, better to have it on a dedicated button or the same button as something else, or even up is more common - it's generally better to have jump on a dedicated button as well, but maybe you put it on up because you had too many actions on the lower side of the keyboard Overall Thoughts: 5/10 Probably would not do so well if this was a commercial product, but I can at least see some decent ideas there. The story panels were very pretty though, honestly I would say just ignore the gameplay and make a visual novel with choices, play into your strength, easier game to make, and it will have much higher quality overall with less things to mess up. Not very good overall, but it's free, and I think you could do much better in a different medium with less gameplay, perhaps focusing more on narrative and visual experience. I got to the frozen area, but got soft locked because the image of red leaving the cave would not go away. I also found that if you position your self under neath a falling platform and jump you move the falling platform. Its got some other bugs, but the story and art are REALY good!!!
REVIEWED ON STEAMDECK If you want to play a very pretty action platformer and have 30 minutes to kill, I highly recommend this game. The unique abilities that are utilized through the lantern are really fun and add a nice variety in combat. The bosses slightly lack difficulty, but for a fun bite sized experience I highly recommend
I don’t have a controller, so the game is trash.
Red Flame and Fable is a hard game to explain; the best way for me to summarize it would be that it's the base definition of insanity. Platonic Murder Party has this unique theme in their game where it's so unique and strange the term horror doesn't describe what's in store. This game is a complete mind**** but it fits so well with the theme and occurrences, that it frankly put me in whole other mindset when I played it. The game tells the story of Little Red Riding hood on her trip through the mystical forest on the way to see her abuela, but while the day wears on the forest may not be what you think. I would genuinely suggest this game if your looking for a adventure/platformer game and want that extra spooky whimsy sprinkled in. In all seriousness, I've been looking forward to this game coming out for a very long time! I know some of the developers and how much a labor of love this game has been for them, so it's amazing to play through after all this time. The art has a phenomenal theme about it, which helps to build the fun yet creepy style the team was going for. Having played through the game twice, once exploring everything to find all of the notes and references and the second time to see how fast I could get through it, it is quite a nice experience for someone who is looking for a metroidvania with a unique storyline and style. I love the design of Red, with her iconic red cape, in contrast with the Wolf, as they still exist within the same theme but very obviously are portrayed in different artistic lights. Both endings are cool, though I definitely prefer the subversion to the normal story the team went with in the end. My only critiques are that lighting the lantern should either be much faster or give you some immunity, as I would find myself locked in animation and still get hit. This was 100% cause I was playing too loose during the boss fights and it ultimately just required me to better space myself, but did feel a bit clunky the first time around. By the second time I played through the game, I was accustomed to it and was able to beat all of the bosses without much issue, since the patterns aren't too tricky. Overall, absolutely worth the price and around 30-40 minutes you'd put in for a first time through! Congrats to the team for making such a cool little game, and I hope y'all make more cool stuff in the future. Also, I love the goat from My Pet Flesh Monster so I appreciated the Obelisk reference :)
I played about 2.5 hours of Red: Flame & Fable and came away impressed, especially knowing it was created as a Champlain College student capstone project. The game has a strong gothic storybook/horror mood, with a distinctive art style and some really memorable creature designs. The cursed animal enemies, infected by the botanical curse, were my favorite part. I also enjoyed the lantern/light mechanic, which adds a nice layer of tension and interest to the gameplay. There are some rough edges in the controls, mechanics, and polish, and the lack of a save system is worth being aware of. But given the scope of the project, those issues felt understandable and did not get in the way of enjoying the concept. Overall, this is a stylish, atmospheric, and promising student project with a lot of creative personality. I’m glad I played it.
Love this! Super difficult and cool art style
