I finished all of the endings of this games, I got to say that the story is good and the gameplay is interesting. For some reason I got stuck at places and couldn't get a few endings without watching a playthrough on youtube it is a me thing tho. I loved that it was fully voice acted however some of the dialog lines made roll my eyes soooo hard I almost saw my brain, it contains lots of unnecessary unfunny sexual jokes (it got some normal funny jokes too) . If you are able to to handle that for the story then go for it. My final rating 9/10
I'm editing the original review after thinking about it a bit. I don't know what I liked about this game, honestly, but it just vibed with me. The mystery itself is bad, for most of the game MC is running in circles asking the same people the same questions
and those people can't even answer those questions because they don't know and can't know anything that could be useful
. The pacing drags on and the game keeps restating things you already heard over and over and over. The game is also very dumb and goofy, but in an edearing way, yet it also has some touching emotional moments. I ended up liking the game anyway, because it was fun and most of the characters were charming (except Mizuki, I wanted to slap her across the face every time she opened her mouth). Spoilers below.
Let's think about it like this. What pieces of information does Date need to solve the case and what avenues does he have to obtain that information: 1. He needs to know that overstaying in Psync machine can exchange minds between bodies. There are only 4 people who can give him that information: Boss, Pewter, Rohan (in jail in Date's original body) and Saito (who is the killer). Boss and Pewter can give Date the puzzle piece he needs to blow the case wide open at literally any time, yet they refuse for nonsensical and contrived reasons. 2. He needs to know about the Original Cyclops Killer case. Again, he can only obtain that information from the same 4 people. He doesn't even need to walk out of the ABIS HQ to get this information, because Boss and Pewter are both aware who the culprits were and where they are. Granted Boss and Pewter think that Saito is dead, because Rohan's body (with Shoko inside at the time) killed itself and they thought it was Saito. I would still say that it's stupid for them not to consider that angle and to not bring that story to Date's attention. Everything else Date does during the whole investigation is completely pointless. Him running in circles and talking to the same people over and over: pointless, because nobody except the 4 people mentioned above actually knows anything of value to cracking the case. Compare that to any good mystery like Ace Attorney or Danganronpa. Every clue and testimony obtained moves the needle on the investigation and gives you a new piece of the puzzle. Often in AA or Dangan you can figure out the mystery before the character becomes aware of it, because the puzzle just aligns in a way that makes sense. It's absolutely not the case in AI1. You have no way of getting anything even tangentially useful to figuring out the mystery until the game just slaps you with a single clue that immediately makes everything obvious. And the only reason why Date didn't get that clue right away is plot contrivance: characters refusing to tell him things they have no good reason to refuse telling him. Also, by far the funniest thing is that is you completely remove Iris's mother and her relationship with So from the story, absolutely nothing changes. Date knowing that story serves zero purpose to cracking the case. The only two pieces of information he needs to know he can learn at any time at the very first day of investigation, if only Boss and Pewter weren't so dense.
So, I would rate the mystery itself a Failure/10. But the game is entertaining enough. 6.5/10
At first I hated this game because of the bad advertising. It presents itself as a serious cyber noir investigation game, but once you get into it you realize it's an absurdist comedy drama investigation story. I felt kind of lied to, and If you read other reviews this is a common complaint. Yes it is stupid, random, and everyone's complaints are valid. I stuck with it and ended up loving it. It's been a long time since I was this invested in a story. I play so many games and read so many stories I normally can tell how the plot is going to go before I even get halfway through most games. This kept me guessing all the way to the true end. 10/10 just for pure novelty and originality. Give it a chance and it is a wild ride.
Was recommended this game by a friend and as it is my very first visual novel game I wasnt really too sure what to expect. But after playing, this game has genuinely become one of my favorite games of all time! Getting to play through all the different routes and learn about all the characters while trying to figure out the story was some of the most fun I've had playing video games in a very long time! I also really enjoyed getting to see the different ways that Date and Aiba would interact based off of the dialogue choices
If you enjoy playing visual novels and haven't played AI: The Somnium Files then play that. One of the most interesting well designed visual novels with a very goofy and compelling story. To really get the full picture you must play through all the endings. Don't stop once you get one ending the game isn't over. It's designed for you to see all of them one by one until you can get the final true ending of the game.
