This review will focus mainly on the core content of AoM: Retold, given most of the new content is included in the DLC packs and I'll probably review them separately. It's also based mostly on single player rather than multiplayer. Having put far too many hours into Age of Mythology in my youth, I was interested to see how the game would fare upon a revisit two decades later. Overall, the experience is positive, but there are a couple of caveats for players who remember the original. Ultimately, the remaster is well done - the graphics are dramatically improved and the worlds look gorgeous, the gameplay is as it was before, and the quality of life changes are welcome, including adding dynamic speed controls for the campaign. Most of the scenarios are faithfully reproduced, and the changes have mostly been for the better, even if they sometimes take a bit of time to get used to - veteran players may need a bit of time to get reacquainted with the Norse gameplay which has had some tweaks and additions to unit types, and some underlying metrics like Atlantean favour gathering have also been changed. Still, it's nothing overwhelming, and the positive changes to reusing God Powers make a lot of sense and make late game favour a much more useful consideration. That being said, there are certain aspects of the remaster which are a bit more frustrating - accepting it's a business model we're used to, the monetisation of all of the new content is a little annoying, and I'm fully expecting this to continue as new releases occur. Secondly, there are a couple of areas where gameplay is not necessarily that sharp - transport is now a lot more fiddly and temperamental when it comes to loading and unloading, and some of the key gameplay audio warnings can get lost/aren't as memorable as I'd like. Equally, while some design changes are just right, others perhaps don't seem to go far enough - the back half of the Altantean campaign is still a slog of between 4-5 scenarios of securing objectives and then waiting for a timer to tick down, and while this can be sped up as mentioned above, it does feel like a bit of additional design to add a bit of variation might be nice. Lastly, and this is something which has been mentioned elsewhere, the changes in voice acting are... mixed. I get some of the idea behind it - moving towards a more faithful reproduction of Greek, Scandinavian and African accents are no bad thing, especially given the... problems of the now banished Chinese DLC for the original version. That being said, the new version... somewhat lacks a lot of the nuance and inflection of the original - the characters feel blander and less distinct, the subtle cadences which made the humour and the drama a bit more quotable gone in favour of earnestness. Ultimately, this is a generally good remaster, and an excellent opportunity for new players to get stuck into the franchise - that being said, I do suspect that there will be a small group of us who do occasionally boot up the original to enjoy the enjoyable ham of the original.
