Follow my Curator page, Fruit N Doggie Reviews, so you can be updated whenever I post a new review.

Overall Rating - High Quality ★★★★☆

First Impressions
Whenever I looked at my copy of Adventures of Shuggy (AS), I figured it was a hardcore platformer, where progress revolved around tricky jumps. That isn't to say there's never any difficult platforming in this title, but it's much more of a puzzle platformer than anything else. It just wasn't quite what I had expected when looking it over.
Gameplay
Another aspect I wasn't aware of before trying AS was that each level would be made up of a single screen, with only a few scrolling at all. It makes for smaller, compact experiences, so that any given stage won't take that long to beat. Upon booting the title up, in mentioned several sub-types for the levels, although there's actually a few more you'll encounter later. Not including Coop Mode or the pack of Teleporter stages, here are some of the different sub-categories, or at least what I called them: Time Travel, Shmu, Rotation, Rope, Zombie, Size-Changing Shuggies, and AI Allies. Coop Mode was designed for two people, but if you set up another controller, could be finished by one person. In the level pack, you have to work around the teleporter. Time Travel levels have a clock repeating itself in the upper right corner. You reference it to know when your past selves will go through whatever actions you had them take, such as standing on a button. Shmu are the name for tiny orange figures that move back and forth. Touching the shmu makes them leap, and they're needed to break the cages around gems. Rotation lets you move either a part of the level, or the entirety of it 90 degrees based on whether you're facing left or right. Rope attaches a length of rope to Shuggy, which he'll use to propel himself down. Zombie removes the ability to control Shuggy, as you have to charge up and time when he jumps, while he constantly walks back and forth. Size-Changing Shuggies let you shrink or grow, or include Shuggies of different sizes within the stage. Finally, the AI Allies are controlled by the game itself. You have to free them from a barrier, and though they won't collect gems directly, they'll auto-pilot to the right places so you can get the gems. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3452992097
Controls
The controls are a bit unorthodox, but because almost all stages are limited to a sole mechanic, it prevents the need for several inputs, which could have gotten confusing. Whenever you want to trigger that specific mechanic, you use the same input for every stage. A minor complaint is that instead of making use of a free face button, it's set to one of the shoulder buttons, and there's no way to change those settings. At least it's responsive and easy enough to keep in mind. Looking at all of the different mechanics, the one I found hardest to understand and control was the rope.
Story
Despite not having the most heroic of names, Shuggy is still the protagonist, and is brave enough to contend with a haunted house by himself. Having inherited the property from his grandfather, it'd be a shame to let it go into further disrepair and waste. As he explores his new house, he'll start facing the various problems with it, such as a busted boiler that's making the entryway into a sauna. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3452991230
Visuals
A factor that probably kept me away from trying this title sooner was its appearance, as it looked simplistic to me. When looking at the backgrounds, hokey enemy design, and other factors, it makes me think of cheap Halloween costumes. As far as the in-game visuals go, they're quite weak, and despite liking AS having tried it, I still don't relish the appearance found in the gameplay. To be honest, it doesn't look significantly better from the cook book panels, but it's not the worst method for conveying the story. It manages to summarizes all the important aspects of what Shuggy's next problem is, and how he's managing to clear up the house of its strange issues. Plus, in the silly imagery, he almost looks cute.
Sound Design
Since this game contrasts things that should be creepy with the reality that they're fairly harmless, the music plays into that same idea, with songs that aren't sinister or spooky. The worst offender is probably the song for the Dungeons, as it sounds like pleasant waiting-room music. Honestly, that song is almost bizarrely welcoming, especially since the protagonist is unable to access his own house. If I'm not mistaking the instruments, I believe two prominent ones throughout the whole soundtrack were the saxophone and xylophone. It makes for a unique sound to the music, as they don't often get to play so central a role in songs. One simple downside comes from the sound effects made by the insects, as they're quite loud, and not the most pleasant noise to listen to. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3452990942
Pros
🌟 You don't have to beat every level in an area to reach the boss and progress onward. All it requires is finding a set of levels that will get you over to it, since unlocking more levels is based on proximity. 🌟 Shuggy is a little floaty, but that helps him make quick movements into small openings. 🌟 There's some exceptions, but many levels can be finished in a short time.
Cons
❌ Whoever came up with the achievements seemed to get distracted, because some of them seem sporadic and random. ❌ There's no way to tell which laser barrier a button will shut off until you hit it.
Tips
🔍 When playing the Time Travel stages, make use of the face on the clock to check when you're moving on and off the buttons. It helps you keep track. Also, holding down the action button will make time pass faster. 🔍 In the Teleporting Troubles levels, you can set two teleporters, one per shoulder button. 🔍 Barriers don't hurt you, so you can touch them despite how they look.
Final Thoughts
After learning what kind of game AS was, and getting used to the various level types it offered, I had an appreciation for what it was going for. It's very possible to design a game with levels that require a bit of thought, which can lead to some difficulty, without being a head-bashing, annoying experience. There isn't a focus on creating perplexing set-ups that'll frustrate players, or making a large gap between being able to figure out the solution, yet not having enough skill to act on it. On any given level, I might have had to make a few attempts before moving on, but there was never a level so demanding that I had to throw in the towel. Mediocre platformer, there are better free ones.
Platformer that changes special action on each level. Sometimes you can replay your ghost, turn level or fart. A game that you will enjoy playing while being in coma.

Still fun, even after 10 years
Adventures of shuggy is an action puzzle-platformer. Base game contains 5 locations with about 100 levels in total. Your goal in each level is to collect all crystals. Each level tries to be unique with different solutions and it turns out pretty good, despite the fact that some levels still remain quite repeatable. Game is not hard, neither in platformer aspect nor in the puzzle one, every level is completed within 5-10 minutes maximum. Saw people complain about control, idk about that, everything seemed fine for me, at least on keyboard. Story is not worth mentioning, it is just there, cute, funny, but not memorable. One drawback I would point out is art style and soundtracks, they are fine, but for me both of them is somewhat overloaded. Too many redundant objects on the screen, sometimes they interfere the gameplay, didn't really like that. Same with the soundtracks, they are nice, but they does not suit the topic of the game. It seems that you are not playing puzzle-platformer with cleaning house and defeating goofy bosses, but conquering some kingdom. There is plenty of content in the game, but for me it was too much, got tired by the time I was finishing last achievements. Devs could make less levels and game would not be worse in that case. Besides, some levels still remain a giant mess with tons of enemies without any interesting solutions. As for additional stuff, there is a coop mode. Very fun and quite short, still contains same 5 worlds, but with much less levels in each, completed it with my gf on one keyboard, some levels may be quite hard for the person that almost never play games, but overall it is a nice addition to the game. And also there is a free DLC, that contains 40 levels with teleporters, also was pretty fun to complete, those levels are much harder in puzzle aspect, so it also took some time. I've completed the game 100% in about 7-8 hours. For that price that is a lot of content. Definetely recommend.
The Adventures of Shuggy is a fun and short 2D Puzzle-Solving, Platforming game that is a fun way to kill time. I haven’t seen many people talking about it if at all, so it’s a pretty underrated game that flew under the radar. I’m not saying it’s a masterpiece or anything like that, but it is certainly fun to wrap your mind around each level and how to solve them. The game isn’t very long either, it can be beaten 100% in under 12 hours so it won’t take long to finish. The objective of the game is simple, you go into a level and have to collect all of the gems spread therein, but it doesn’t ever get stale or repetitive as there are a number of different areas too that introduce new and different concepts, such as: manipulating gravity, teleporters, a rope to swing with, evil clones of Shuggy in a timer… All of these make it so it doesn’t ever feel boring to pass the next level. There is a story in The Adventures of Shuggy, but it isn’t very deep as that isn’t the main focus of the game. It also has a few bosses, which are good enough for what the game is, but they are evidently limited by the fact that you can’t really attack per se as there is no attack button. Finally, I wanted to mention that the game includes Coop levels (which are separate from the main levels) and also has a DLC, Shuggy’s Teleporting Troubles, which focuses more on solving levels using the Teleporter feature. If you are a Completionist like me, know that most of the Coop levels are doable solo (provided you have 2 controllers) with the exception of Get a Move On (from my experience). Overall, I’d say The Adventures of Shuggy is well worth your time, and I’d really like to see this game get some more public recognition. You just have to keep in mind that the game isn’t meant to be the next big 2D smash hit, rather a fun, short game to be enjoyed for a few hours.
Final Score: 7.5/10 Good (Worth playing)
Been meaning to put up a review for many years. Was very innovative for it's time and has a lot of things I enjoy (gameplay, graphics, platformers etc..) Big thing, if this ever got re-released, would be to shrink down the total # of levels and focus in refining the parts that work. For example, any level where I need to move those creatures is such a pain and frustrating. Similar, the "multi" levels when you don't want to run into yourself can be fun, but be nice to have a button to make the switch etc.. Overall great game for its time, worth checking out at this price point.

It's funny, how this 13 year old game is bringing me more fun and enjoyment than a lot of newer games. I guess I'm getting old, enjoying the simpler times xD.
I like that this is really like Dark Souls
