Solid game where you can see its inspirations from various points of the Shin Megami Tensei series. Gameplay is primarily dungeon-crawling like SMT1, character growth system involves scanning attacks like in Devil Survivor, or purchasing new skills akin to Digital Devil Saga. There's also a wide variety of skills and attacking elements with enemies having varying affinities that you have to work around, while you have to manage your own elemental affinities with the equipment you wear. It does fall short in a few places. Story is pretty sparse - you're a security guard suddenly stuck in a mall when it's infested by demons, and you have to fight your way through waves of demons to find the way out, rescuing survivors and teaming up with others who can fight like you can with the help of a mysterious device you've found. I also feel that the interface could be improved - your characters' resistances and vulnerabilities can be inferred from the equipment they wear but the game seems to think they have weakness where the equipment doesn't say. You've got a whole lot of buffs and debuffs to manage - one for each stat - but with a limited skill capacity of 6 and so many stats governing different things, the game would do better to condense its buffs and debuffs. (Not that I mind, I've managed to ignore buffs for most part until the final boss) Still, it's a decent game for an indie developer. It definitely scratched my itch for SMT-esque combat and customization when I'm not playing SMT Nocturne. I look forward to what they'll come up with next.
I came across this game after searching for games like Etrian Odyssey & Shin Megami Tensei. I'll start with the positives :) The good The 'vibe' of the game is very similar to Devil Survivor, artwork is nice, story starts off nice and simple and gets more involving as you go through. Battle system is similar enough to above mentioned games and also varied enough for you to get a kick out of organising your party with a selection of acquired skills (collected via getting hit by a monsters attack whilst you use a turn to absorb said monster skills). The sprites for the monsters are pretty nice as well, reading down on this page, these are some nicely taken stock images and utilised well. If they are original, then very good. Music is also pretty good, standard battle and FOE battle are suitably fun and catchy and the standard ambient themes are nice enough. The gameplay is both fun and challenging, not a lot of replay value as it is a little short for these sort of games. Some post game boss fights would not hurt. The not so good The interface could so with a lot of work, quite clunky overall. I used a controller until a bug made that option not viable. it would be nice to quickly flick between characters and not have to exit the skill menu to select another character to mess around with their skills. Characters equipment needs more descriptions. The best weapon in the game is a gun bought at the mid length which hits 3 times. No other gun can come close to matching this and I feel as though most of the weapons have hidden effects FOE combat starts off fun, as in the fights are truly difficult until you have better levels and equipment, which brings us to the biggest issue with the combat. The status ailments. Not all effects are created equal. I can't remember them all, but each element has its own flavour of effect and some independent status effects are there as well. The ones worth abusing are Lightning and Fire. Lightning paralyses for an indefinite amount of turn and fire causes between 5 & 10% of a monsters health each of its turn. As the FOE monsters health pools are so high that even buffed, super effective moves barely tickle them, and they can usually heavily wound you in return. So your only viable option is to spam Elec type and fire type until it sticks and then whittle them down. Works for basically every FOE in the game. This also works against you as well, which in this case I do not mind. If a monster has the ability to cast multi strike elec attacks then there is a very real option of your party getting destroyed by some middle of the road monsters. Overall though, for what it is and how much it is. I had more fun with this than some of the other recommended games of this genre. Short and sweet and gives you a craving for some more. TL:DR Combat and music are great, a great tribute to the games it drew its influence from. Interface could be better, certainly feels like it was made on a smaller budget. 7/10 (Super Harsh Critic) Well done!
Advent Crossroad is the first dungeon crawler released by Nankada, the dev of Core Crossing. Much like its successor, Advent Crossroad follows nearly the same formula, with some notable exceptions. The game contains a system of learning magic much like Final Fantasy's Blue Mage. If a hero uses the Scan command and an enemy then uses an unclaimed spell, the character will claim it and be able to use it thereafter. This is a really nice mechanic, and because skills and spells are so costly to learn, it's a great way to get stronger when you otherwise wouldn't be able to. Another change from Core Crossing is the fact that there is a wider variety of character builds. Every hero can learn any skill in the game, but with the limit of active skills allowed, you are forced to specialize. Planning how each hero will develop is incredibly rewarding and fun, and makes the game feel like your choices matter. My main character was an offensive Black Mage type, focusing on elemental damage, the second character was fighter-type specializing in physical damage, and so on. A notable way this game differs from Core Crossing is its world. It's set in modern times, instead of a fantasy era, Your characters will be wielding guns, batons, and can even wear cosplay gear, which is amusing and interesting, all the same. Advent Crossroad's plot focuses on a group of friends fighting to liberate a mall from a mysterious threat, and each character has their own personality and agenda. It's nice to see how they alter the plot, and relate to different aspects of it in their own way, giving them agency. There's even a few references to classic memes, which made me laugh. Despite being Nankada's first game, Advent Crossroad felt more complex and complete than its sequel. Its additional mechanics, systems, and a more interesting storyline made it feel more realized and drew me in further. Definitely play this game if you like dungeon crawlers, or are a fan of Core Crossing. I await Nankada's third game, and will definitely support them when it is released.
A great dungeon crawling game! I had a lot of fun finishing it. The SMT inspirations did a great job here, btw! Can't wait to see your next project and good luck!
Love it already. A stylish and breezy dungeon crawler with great aesthetics. Really excited to dig in further.
This is a simple yet fun DRPG. If you enjoy games like SMT Strange Journey and Labyrinth of Galleria you'll have a fun time with this one as well. I did experience a few crashes during the early parts of the game, but for some reason they stopped once I reached the mid point. Just remember to save every so often and you'll be fine. I look forward to seeing what this developer will do next.
This is a very solid if somewhat short first person dungeon crawler/jrpg hybrid, with an open skill system rather than character classes (though each character starts with some unique talents). Certainly a good buy for the price and since there aren't a whole lot of first person dungeon crawlers on the market, a definite recommendation for people like me who can't get enough of these types of games.
Overall, it's a great experience! I finished the game and it definitely satisfied my Dungeon Crawler itch. I found the gameplay to be engaging and the production value is great. The music/art/sound were all solid. I recommend it if you are a Dungeon crawler fan who is looking for a short and fun experience.
