About

Abject Abyss is a first-person sci-fi horror adventure about isolation, discovery, and humanity's insignificance in a vast uncaring void.

Explore a distant research facility on the edge of charted space, far from civilisation. Search dark corners for stims, lost key fobs, vital notes, and other tools that might keep you alive.

As a lone technician you’ll navigate claustrophobic crawlspaces, lightless hallways, and frozen tundra, facing a multitude of dangers along the way. Stay hidden, stay quiet, and when things go bad, run.

From unlocking doors to restarting a failing reactor, use your wits and technical know-how to push forward, and escape Marzanna before it’s too late.

Tense first-person exploration through dark corridors, maintenance shafts, and frozen wastes.
Stealth-focused encounters where noise and light are critical to your survival.
Tools and items to collect in classic adventure game fashion, without encumbrance or limited space.
A focus on atmosphere, a short immersive experience that starts calm and ramps up greatly towards the end.

Overall, mixed feelings. Is it fun? Yes, you will be entertained for a short time. Positives: * Great visuals - nice smooth textures and objects, lighting effects are effective without being excessive. * Great sound, I especially loved the various wind sounds in the snow level. * Nice level design, good lonely environment exploration. This is by far the best thing about the game. Negatives: * It's extremely short. If you have played the demo, you have played half of the full game. I think the developer messed up the ratio here. The full game should be much more than the demo, but it is not. * The monsters are just annoying. This is the same problem as in SOMA. The monsters are a bunch of mutant zombies who are ALWAYS invincible and are ALWAYS faster than you, and can ALWAYS follow you. So, hiding is pointless, you have to just run from them . In the later part of the game , just like in SOMA, they were impossible to avoid, so you just get killed over and over and over again, which makes you wonder, why do these monsters even exist in the game if there is nothing you can do about them and no consequence to getting killed repeatedly by them? There is a gun, but I only had 3 bullets in the whole game and it only stuns the monsters for about 2 seconds, essentially useless. * The game is so short! In the hallways, I saw signs for "deep labs" and "excavation". Wow, sounds cool! However, 2 minutes later, the player just walks on a shuttle and the game ends. If you try to explore more, the game says "no point in exploring further"! Really?! Dude, the exploration is the best thing about the game! When it ended I felt more frustrated than anything else.
The game was ok. The story was a bit hard to follow and the environments were a bit repetitive and bland. All environments were essentially the same, long corridors that connect non descript rooms together. As a result navigation was a bit hard at times. The objective wasn't always clear so I'd end up running round just hoping to find something, and often ended up finding the items needed for the objective long before actually finding the objective itself. All objectives were very same-y too. Find items to unlock a thing and do it again. Not all was bad, the monsters had fun designs and there were some tense chase sequences. The atmosphere overall was pretty engaging, if a bit repetitive. The performance was good too, fps was consistent, load screens were quick, and I never ran into a single bug. All in all the game was just fine, but don't expect anything particularly note worthy.
I started straight from the demo save, which was nice. The game probably takes about 2 hours to finish otherwise. It's a slow-burn horror with a lot of horror ambiance. I don't think there's really anything that hits the truly spooky moments until the very last quarter of the game. Even then, the creatures you experience are mostly low-threat. I did find it fairly frustrating when trying to escape the half ET, half Human like creature(s). They're faster than you, and you have very limited ammo for your stun gun that can slow them down. There were a few times I got boxed into a room and presumably eaten. Cool design of the creature though. I named him Kevin. Puzzles are fairly simple and well implemented. There are at least 2 endings which can both be completed right there at the end. Fairly short and sweet, decently priced. I enjoyed it. I didn't love it, but I'd give it a solid 6/10.
Abject Abyss doesn't bring anything new to scifi horror, it's got all the elements you'd expect, a frozen outpost in the middle of nowhere, goop growing out of the walls, a megacorporation conducting unethical research, but if it ain't broke, don't fix it. It's a very comfy game, clearly made with love for the classics it's drawing from, and while it never outright scared me it definitely nailed the atmosphere. I enjoyed the lore, and even if I would've preferred a couple more definitive answers I liked that it left up most of what happened up in the air. The facility's layout being procedurally generated in-universe was a fun touch, though I do think the level design suffers from a few too many transitory areas, just hallways leading into more hallways, which wasn't helped by how sterile the environmental art direction sometimes felt. The areas where it opened up into something a little more naturalistic and lived in were a lot more compelling. Gameplay-wise it's pretty simple, you just run and hide from monsters while solving puzzles, but given the length and price I think it's a good balance, and the few moments where it did shake things up came as a nice break from the standard mechanical loop. Overall it's a low budget scifi horror movie in the form of a solo dev indie game, and what it lacks in production value or mechanical complexity it makes up for with a lot of personality. I see a lot of potential here, I'll be curious to find out what the developer does next.
Abject Abyss was a pleasant little horror experience 9/10, it showcases clean/high quality environments and thoughtful level design wrapped in an interesting story with well executed tension and horror-fueled gameplay moments. For anyone that is a fan of psychological horror experiences, at this price, it is a no-brainer and a great purchase to get lost and immersed in a story for 2-4 hours. The game features simple environmental puzzles that require you to search rooms to find codes, pieces to a puzzle or equipment needed to progress while out uncovering the story and out manouvering creatures lurking in the space. Understanding the layout of the locations and items was the most challenging part, but the most rewarding after having to concentrate to find your way around certain rooms and areas, especially if they were on the path of a creature. It is very impressive that this was developed mostly by one person, and for those interested in getting all the achievements there is some replayability involved which makes the low cost even more valuable. Some minor feedback: - As a player, it feels as though it is almost impossible to escape a creature once it is pursuing me, it would be great to have plenty more Stun ammo to defedn myself. Dying became part of the experience though and worked for me in the end. - As a player I was never sure if the creatures had lost me or not, it would be great for there to be an audio cue once they had stopped tracking me to know I was safe. Plus I never knew if I was faster than the creatures after taking the energy drinks, which would have been nice for clearer behavior there. - As a player I could not quite understand the pathing of the creatures, at times it would have been great to see something like stains on the ground where they patrol, unless it is random and intended to be undecipherable. It just led me to sprint through locations to find out where it could be positioned to then form a strategy. Overall super polished and immersive experience and proud to see a solo project like this come out of NZ. I hope to see more from the developer in the future :)
Lore melt my brain..
A shorter sci-fi horror experience with SCP vibes, solid gameplay, and lore that left me wanting more. Hoping to see more from this dev and maybe have this universe expanded upon in the future.
Died too many times and ending was VERY anti-climactic. Also WAY too much reading. Some voice overs on some of the reading would have been nice.
