About
Abandoned Archive is a uniquely crafted, fast-paced, spellcasting roguelike. Set in an archive that has been long forgotten and sealed away, the player must venture deep below ground to uncover the dark secrets tucked away.
Discover the many schools of magic, and utilise their spells to fight your way down the tower you are sealed in. Battle with anything from lightning and air to gravity and time. Becoming powerful requires you to synergise your spells by carefully choosing upgrades and collecting rare relics that offer passive effects to be combined with your finest abilities.
When one day you find yourself sealed in a tower, a strange, sentient Orb proposes a deal. With Oblome the Orbite, who claims to be one with science, you forge onwards in an attempt to escape your imprisonment and find the city of Orbites. Tied to your pact, you must protect Oblome at any cost if any danger arises, and in turn, he will protect you. There is definitely something stowed away, some kind of synthetic horror at the base of this archive. Will you delve deep and decipher the mysteries? Or will you simply succumb to your surroundings?
Set in the country of Gratissia in the tower named “Turrim”, Abandoned Archive has the player exploring fragments of a species’ past, floor by floor. With an exiled ex-scientist as your guide and protector, there seems to just be many burning questions, with answers hiding in the cracks of the archive.

I will preface this with my playtime being low, so some points may be improved by further gameplay, and maybe at some point I'll do more and revise this. Unfortunately, the reason my playtime is low is because the game simply doesn't hook me as a roguelike thus far. Positive: -Variety of attacks and upgrades for them that make loadouts feel new. Even just playing a bit, I ran into many spells and upgrade paths. There's definitely some depth there. -There are a decent number of instances of decisionmaking in the field; spending money to reroll boons, taking chances on events that might give less than stellar outcomes, etc. The game doesn't feel like it's forcing me to make bad choices like some others fall into, which is nice. Negative: -In my opinion, the visuals are a big hurdle. A lot of the maps are very repetitive, the sprites and animations feel flat, and the spells are mostly functional but some leave a lot to be desired in terms of indicators. On top of that, the atmosphere of the game is *very* dark, and while dark aesthetics can work, here I find it mostly just makes the aforementioned bits feel worse. Especially because it gets even darker when on low health. -The gameplay definitely wants to be a fast-paced dodgy game along the lines of Enter the Gungeon, but it feels like it misses the mark in a few regards. With animations not being very fluid, figuring out attack indicators and i-frames is quite difficult. Items that improve dodge rolls work in odd ways, slowing everything else down rather than actually speeding up your roll, which makes things difficult when trying to dodge fast attacks at certain angles. Time slow abilities are inconsistent when enemy projectiles are spawned at certain times. Despite stun being a very frequent mechanic, its helpfulness is varied, as some enemies follow through with their attacks during/after stun while others stop entirely; this issue in particular compounds with the speedy or nonexistent visual cues. Once you've fought a boss, you're locked into the room and forced to teleport to the next stage, meaning you can't switch up your loadout or refill HP before going to the next floor. Each of these is a relatively small gripe / nitpick, but they all came up in my limited time playing, and adding them all up leads to a game that felt hard for unsatisfying reasons rather than solely the player's lack of skill. -While in the positives I talked about in-field choices that felt good, having to teleport back to the start room to upgrade spells leads to two situations, both of which are negative to me. On the one hand, if you just get good enough at patterns and dodging, you don't need to upgrade spells much, but then it feels stagnant. On the other, you can go back to upgrade before finding a boss, but then you're doing a big walk back. If you haven't found the boss room yet, you're also required to then do a full walk back with no map or teleports. Overall: Given that I believe this is a first game project, I'd say it's decently above average and there's something there for people who want something simple, and probably much more content I haven't seen; particularly the story, which I didn't feel like I could comment on yet. Additionally, for anyone who wants to buy the game for its creator and connection to Neuro-sama, I wouldn't call it a waste of money, especially at its low pricepoint. That said, for people disconnected from that fandom and looking for something to put a ton of hours into, while I think these issues are fine to have in a first game and it's a point of improvement for future work, they also do mean that I'm going to say I don't really recommend it on its own merits as it stands. With a plethora of options on the market for roguelikes with spellslinging or fast paced high-execution gameplay, I think Abandoned Archive does fall a bit short on the list.
"This game sucks." -Neuro-sama
The fast-paced combat and the combinations of spells make the core of the game fun. The bosses and enemies have interesting attacks and patterns to learn. Despite this, I think the game suffers from some problems: - No mini map - Lack of telepraphs or indicators, especially bosses - Some areas being way too dark - Lack of an impact when using some spells - When replacing a spell because your current stance is full, you should be able to swap to the other stance without closing the menu, swapping, then picking it up. Some way to reorganize your spells would be good. If these are addressed, the gameplay would definitely be improved a lot, and I could recommend the game. But as it is, I am unable to.

“This game sucks.” - Neuro-sama
