tl;dr - 1st game was great, this game has a good start but hasn't been updated in a while and I'm worried it has been abandoned. Purchase at your own discretion. I was really excited to play this as I loved the first game, but after playing for just a few minutes I was feeling very disappointed. They changed the formula up quite a bit to where it doesn't really feel like a sequel anymore. This in itself is not why I requested a refund however. I know it's an early access game, but it just felt very empty, and when I went to look at find some more information about development and what-not I saw that there had been no updates since 2016, a major red flag. I saw some people in the forums calling it abandonware as well and decided to get out while I could. Now, all that said, if the dev's do continue work on this game and finish it I bet it will be great. The first one was a blast, and this one seems to have a solid groundwork laid, but I just can't recommend it at this point in time. Constant updates or at least communication from the devs is very important for an early access game. Without those two things there is just too much risk involved...who wants to pay for half a game with the promise of another half coming....only to never have that promise fulfilled. I realize that the early access model's goal is to garner early interest in a game and help fund the production, but too many devs have abused the system for me to trust it anymore without a healthy amount of updates to show that development is in fact progressing. I honestly hope I'm wrong and that the game does get finished, and if it does I will most likely buy it again. Take this review as more of a caveat emptor than a straight disapproval, and maybe just add this game to your wishlist and check in on it every now and then. That's what I'm doing.

Possess all the enemies. What's not to like? That mechanic alone made this an instant no brainer. This is a must get for people who like emergent gameplay. If you're familiar with the first A Wizard's Lizard, this is improved in every way. If you're new, you don't have to go back and play the previous game, because this stands so well on its own. The two developers are very open about their development process and very responsive to feedback. If you like to get involved in the process of making a game, this is a great one to get early. Right now (4/5/16) the only downside is a lack of content. This is because the guys have been working hard on getting core game design elements RIGHT before pumping out broken and unfun game elements. Lately they have been pushing out content and the game is rapidly filling out. I expect the content problem to be very temporary. This game is seriously worth your time. It was certainly worth mine.
So, a review for this game. Is it a good game? Well... Not exactly sure. I have played both the normal version, and the beta version. The beta brings it closer to games like Binding of Isaac and similar, which is the version I like the most. The beta version of the game has a lot of potential... But the game feels dead now. Last update was in December, 2016. That's over half a year of complete silence. And thus, it feels like the game has been abandoned. So, I do not recommend this game. It's dead.
Pretty bad policy to abandon a game like these guys did. Game is okay, but thumbs-downing due to poor ethics on the dev's part.
Short version: Did you play A Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past growing up? Do you like random dungeons, loot, and or wizards and or LIZARDS?!! Well then this is the game for you! Long version: I really love games. There is no other way to say it. Board games, video games, whatever it may be, there is just something so fun and alluring about being dropped into another world, figuring it out, and accomplishing whatever challenges it sets out before you. I was fortunate enough to be allowed to experience this game for the last couple of weeks, and I have had a great time for all the right reasons. Firstly, the game is hard, but its difficulty is not a gimmick. Its challenges are understandable and fair. It is very obvious the developers spent a lot of time thoughtfully crafting this experience to make sure you can figure out what's going on around you, to allow you to formulate your own thoughts on how to accomplish your goals, your own way, without bombarding you with tutorials or text that stop you from enjoying the game. The possession mechanic keeps you on the edge of your seat. Jumping from monster to monster just barely escaping death is exciting- just as choosing the right monster for the right situation makes you feel smart. Coupled with getting your favorite wand can make you feel unstoppable, but running out of charges makes you appreciate the game's difficulty. As you progress you will find that because the developers did such a good job of ensuring you understand the game's threats and mechanics, you will become quite masterful- my favorite part of a game is when they challenge you to do something outside of your comfort zone, but still allow you to do it 'your' own way. This is exactly what the meta progression of this game encourages. Your skill alone is the key to another interesting challenge just around the corner. The game is still in development obviously, but it has a level of polish that is really refreshing. The sound effects, and little extra bounces and animations are just really very pleasing, impressive, and appreciated. The music is catchy and fun; sooner or later you will hum along while playing it. The aesthetic is brilliant- a mix of cute and gruesome, without being too much of either. The lighting effects create a really fun and unique ambiance, that makes you want to stay just a bit longer... Okay, I've said a lot of good things about AWL: Soul Thief, so are you ready for the bad?! Well honestly I've got nothing for you. Of course it's not perfect, but it's exactly what it should be, an interesting, unique, rewarding, challengingly fun experience that leaves you wanting more- and thank goodness because it's only just now coming to early access, which the developers have stated they want to add a bunch more to this game before they are done. I don't know about anyone else, but I can't wait to see what other fun exciting stuff they come up with. Whether you buy it or not, I hope you have fun playing whatever you're playing these days, because I am always amazed that we live in a time where you can just sit down at your computer and dive into a world other people spent so many hours bringing to life for you to enjoy. -Vox
So much potential, unfortunately yet another early access game that's been abandoned by the devs. A real shame.
Soul Thief: A Wizard's Lizard 2 delivered a great experience. It has some great stuff that you don't see in other games like it. The power to possess any enemy adds a unique feel to the game that The Binding of Isaac doesn't have. The ticket system is a nice feature, knowing when you lose you don't feel like it was for nothing like other games. So with that said, I can't wait to see more in future updates. And it's a definite purchase for fans of rouge games like this.
While the game so far is lighter on content, I really enjoy the mechanical changes over the first game. Possessing different enemies to have different attacks is pretty fun. I also find there's just a lot of other improvements over the first one. For those who haven't played the first one, it has a bit of a feel like binding of isaac and other rogue likes, while being its own unique feel.
