For a first game from an small dev, it's a pretty swell point-and-click adventure. Takes about 5 to 6 hours to complete. The puzzles made sense - I only got stuck a few times due to missing an item or conversation earlier. I enjoyed learning the lore and how the bad guys were portrayed. The item combining system was a bit of a hassle to use. PROS puzzles lore music NEUTRAL that RPG Maker look CONS lack of proof-reading (will probably be fixed in a future update) some bugs (ditto) item combining could use some fine-tuning All in all, I consider it money well spent, and look forward to seeing what One Bit Studio will do next.
i was pleasantly surprised by this game. liking the story so far, and most of the puzzles are intersting, although i had to look up some of the solutions in the walthrough. but the best thing is the soundtrack, the tracks are absolutely fantastic, they provide a great atmosphere. if i had to choose a negative, it is the lack of proper proofreading, I encountered a few strange english sentences which should be fixed.
SUM: I was expecting an odd package, but the engine here just doesn't seem to be built for P&C gameplay, and it shows. The "best fit" audience for A Long Road Home is RPG-Maker fans who want something a little different, not P&C fans who want something a little different. I guess I was hoping for something very roughly in the vein of Hero of the Kingdom, plus some puzzles. But this ain't that. -------------------- Sorry to be the first person to give a negative review, but there are some negatives, here, and I feel they should be noted. Kudos to the Dev for responding positively to this review -- that's a good dev! Others have said what they enjoyed about the game, and I admit, the price is quite fair for the amount of content. There's quite a lot of complexity to the puzzles, and the game would deliver its advertised ~5h playtime, probably more. Still, I simply did not enjoy the act of playing it, and here's why. 1) I had some crashes trying to run the game in fullscreen mode on Windows 10 (which I would have preferred) and had to resort to windowed mode. The window was tiny, which compounded the next negative: 2) While this is billed as a Point-and-Click Adventure (a genre I adore), it has many elements that are more at home in a Hidden Object Game (a mechanic I detest). The basic tactic for getting a foothold on puzzles is to slide your cursor around until the cursor changes, indicating that you've located clickable tiles/items on the screen. They're often quite hard to spot, because the RPG-maker-ish screens are quite cluttered. Interactable items get even harder to spot if you play in windowed mode (as I was forced to do). To be fair, there are often bits of dialogue or "notes" lying around that provide some basic guidelines on where you should look for stuff. But these are often quite cryptic. Worse: useful dialogue is embedded in a sea of narrative, much of the useful dialogue won't repeat, and many of the useful notes don't travel with you. This makes it difficult to keep track of WTF you're doing. These were a bad start. But what ultimately led me to use the walkthrough (after about an hour) was discovering the third negative: 3) Not only is it difficult to locate clickable tiles in the first place, but you can't properly interact with them unless you're positioned perfectly next to them, facing them from the right direction, etc. Actually, it's worse than that: if you try to interact with or use an item on an object at a distance, then instead of auto-walking over to it to perform the action (a classic P&C mechanic), you'll get one of the default "nope, that won't work" dialogues, even if you attempted the correct action. This makes it doubly-difficult to locate interactables, since you might very well click on them but the click won't register. Even following a walkthrough was a chore. And a few remaining negatives: 4) The save system seems clunky. I lost about 20m of playtime at one point. 5) The inventory system is very clunky. Whatever engine this is built on just doesn't seem to be made to smoothly handle the basic mechanic of combining items. I was also a little annoyed that in the last ~30m of gameplay, a new method of using items on the environment got patched in and was used for only a single puzzle. 6) Some of the puzzles are very clunky. Another puzzle had a tiny switch comprised of a few pixels tucked into the corner that (in windowed mode) was indiscernible from the background.

Let me be fair and square. Lately I´m not that much into RPG Maker games since they are mostly all alike, This one stands aside. Firstly, it's a point-and-click adventure with completely deployable mouse. Secondly, the game has both a good story (including lore) and a bunch of good puzzles. Thirdly, you actually have to read the docs you find in order to move on through the plot, which I find pretty unique these days. Besides, the soundtrack is fantastic and adds a lot to the atmosphere.
Although I only touched the very first few minutes of the full game (played through most of the demo version before purchasing the game though), my initial impressions are positive. The graphic can be considered nice - if you are not sick of the "RPG maker” style yet -, the music is really lovely and melodic, the writing seems pretty witty so far, with some basic puzzles that won't hurt your brain to solve. I have to play some more to see if the writing keeps me hooked on the long run (as the most importaint piece of every good advanture game) and hopefully there will be more complex puzzles than at the start. I'll update my review once I finish the game but as now, I can definitely say it is worth the - very low - price and you could do a thousand worse thing with your money than giving this a shoot.
I feel this is sort of a hidden gem. It was strangely enjoyable, with pretty good puzzles and a really great soundtrack, really worth its price!
