A Knight's Adventure is a modest medieval action RPG that focuses on exploration, sword fighting, and the idea of building a small group of followers while traveling through a dangerous fantasy realm. Developed and published by NifftyGameWorks, it is an Early Access project whose ambitions are noticeably larger than what is currently available. Rather than delivering an elaborate story-driven campaign, the game offers a straightforward experience centered on roaming between settlements and forts, encountering hostile patrols, and surviving repeated battles. The world provides the basic ingredients needed to establish the wandering-knight fantasy. Players can explore a realm containing villages, forts, enemies, and other locations while combat regularly interrupts the journey. Hostile characters and respawning enemies ensure there is usually something to fight, making sword combat one of the primary activities. The approach is easy to understand and suitable for players who enjoy uncomplicated action, although the limited variety means encounters can become repetitive once the available content has been thoroughly explored. One of its more promising concepts involves companions and mercenaries. Companions are designed around loyalty, with characters potentially becoming dedicated followers after the player earns their trust. Mercenaries operate differently because their loyalty depends on payment. If the player can no longer afford their services, they may leave rather than continue fighting without compensation. This distinction could have created interesting decisions concerning money, party composition, and personal relationships. Unfortunately, the available version does not develop these ideas deeply enough to realize their full potential. The scope of the Early Access build is the game's biggest weakness. The playable environment contains a single realm with several villages and forts, while the companion selection is extremely restricted. Plans for additional realms, varied environments, new enemies, more companions, larger settlements, character upgrades, and expanded recruitment systems suggest that the original vision was considerably more ambitious. When judged purely as it currently exists, however, the experience feels closer to an early framework for a medieval RPG than a completed adventure. Its presentation matches the project's relatively small scale. The colorful 3D visuals favor a simple fantasy appearance instead of realistic medieval detail, which gives the game a somewhat approachable indie character. Environments and character models are functional rather than elaborate, and players accustomed to highly polished modern action RPGs should substantially lower their expectations. On the positive side, the uncomplicated graphics contribute to modest hardware requirements and make the game relatively lightweight. Progression and exploration could have benefited from considerably more depth. Discovering settlements and battling enemies initially provides motivation to continue traveling, but a game built around an open-ended medieval adventure needs meaningful rewards, character development, varied encounters, and substantial environmental diversity to sustain longer sessions. With only a small amount of content available, there is not enough progression to transform its simple combat and exploration into a compelling long-term RPG loop. Another important consideration is the state of development. A Knight's Adventure remains an Early Access title, and its limited existing content means players should evaluate it based on what can actually be played rather than the much larger experience originally envisioned. Features that were planned for future development sound appealing, especially multiple realms and expanded companion mechanics, but potential additions cannot compensate for missing depth in the present build. Steam Deck compatibility is officially categorized as Playable rather than fully Verified. Performance with the default graphics configuration is considered suitable, and the game can run successfully on SteamOS. However, handheld players should expect compromises. Some functionality is not fully accessible through the default controller configuration, touchscreen interaction or a community controller layout may occasionally be useful, and text entry can require manually opening the virtual keyboard. Some interface text may also appear small, while certain prompts can display keyboard, mouse, or non-Steam Deck controller icons. It is therefore functional on the Deck, but the experience is less seamless than a fully optimized handheld release. As a free-to-play indie project, A Knight's Adventure is easier to approach than it would be as a substantial paid release. There is some charm in simply wandering through its medieval environment, encountering enemies, visiting settlements, and imagining what its companion and mercenary systems could eventually have become. Players interested in obscure experimental RPGs may enjoy seeing its foundations firsthand. Those expecting a complete medieval adventure, extensive questing, sophisticated combat, meaningful character progression, or a large living world will probably find it too limited. Overall, A Knight's Adventure contains several appealing ideas but never develops enough of them into a substantial RPG experience. Its medieval setting, straightforward combat, exploration, and follower concepts establish a reasonable foundation, yet restricted content and an unfinished Early Access structure significantly reduce its lasting appeal. It works best as a curiosity for players interested in small independent medieval RPG experiments rather than as a replacement for a fully developed action RPG. Rating: 5/10
