I was on the fence whether to recommend the game or not, but it came down to two questions: "Did I have fun and would I want to play again?" Well the answer to that is frankly, No. It is a cute game and the premise is nice. The artwork is lovely and the quests are okay, but nothing earth-shattering fun. My biggest issue is the controls. It's just too hard to control this boat whether via keyboard/mouse or controller (and I tried both). Even when you get upgrades, it so persnickity and un-intuitive that it was just miserable to play. Especially the racing portions where you have to beat another boat or shoot the cannons in a timed test. I struggled with this so much that I almost gave up the game. My husband even said, "I wish you'd stop yelling at that game." I will say the developer is extremely supportive and active in the discussions as well as on discord and takes all feedback on board. I persevered and completed the game and got all achievements in about 9 hours, but I wouldn't want to go through that again, so that's why I'm not recommending. The price-point is good for this type of game, so if you don't mind having to fight the controls, go for it, but I wouldn't buy it again.

Great game! The environment was really interesting and satisfying to explore, I loved all of the normal objects oversized for the scale of the world (reminds me of The Borrowers). Helping everyone out and solving some puzzles was enjoyable, overall I appreciated my time in Whaleville! If you like games like A Short Hike or Pine Hearts mixed with a bit of Spilled!, you'll probably like this game.
Sinopsis

+ • colorful 2D cartoon art style • creative and unconventional setting • pleasant soundtrack • charming voice work reminiscent of Animal Crossing, featuring its own fictional language • plenty of achievements to unlock • exploration at your own pace without any time pressure − • a large number of fetch quests • the narrative occasionally lacks depth and a stronger sense of significance • slow boat travel can disrupt the overall pacing • long distances between quest objectives can become frustrating at times • Boat controls sometimes feel a bit clunky and inconvenient
Conclusion
The game shines primarily through its colorful presentation and cozy atmosphere. It offers a relaxing experience for players who enjoy exploring at their own pace and are looking for a short, lighthearted adventure. However, those seeking a deeply engaging story or a wider variety of quest design may come away somewhat disappointed. Even so, it remains a charming indie title that is well worth picking up during a sale.
A really cute and fun game! Was able to 100% it in under 5 hours and once I started playing I couldn't stop. It reminded me if dredge, spilled, and night in the woods had all melded and entered the world of Pinocchio. A fun story full of characters with the joy of being a ship captain.
A Completely Fictional Story About a City Inside a Whale is an exploration adventure developed by akinat0 and ln404 and published by Contrast Games that immediately captures attention with one of the most unusual concepts in recent indie gaming. A city existing inside a whale sounds like an idea built purely for novelty, but the game transforms that surreal premise into something unexpectedly thoughtful and charming. Rather than relying on constant action or complex mechanics, it creates a slower and more reflective experience centered around discovery, atmosphere, and the joy of wandering through a world unlike anything else. The game takes players to Whaleville, a strange settlement constructed within the body of an enormous whale drifting through an imaginative world. From the moment exploration begins, it becomes clear that the developers wanted players to feel curiosity rather than urgency. Whaleville is not designed like a traditional game world filled with aggressive objectives and constant interruptions. Instead, it encourages wandering without pressure. Streets, waterways, and unusual locations invite players to investigate at their own pace, creating an adventure that feels more personal and relaxing than many exploration-focused titles. Movement plays a surprisingly important role in shaping the atmosphere. Players travel using a small wind-up boat, a design choice that immediately reinforces the slower rhythm of the experience. Transportation is not about speed or efficiency. The boat transforms movement into part of the journey itself. Drifting through Whaleville creates opportunities to appreciate environmental details, discover hidden corners, and encounter unexpected moments that might otherwise go unnoticed. The setting becomes the game's greatest achievement. Whaleville feels imaginative without becoming overwhelming or chaotic. The world embraces absurdity but never treats its unusual ideas as jokes alone. Strange architecture, unusual residents, and mysterious locations all contribute toward building an environment that feels alive and quietly memorable. The city maintains an identity that feels whimsical while still grounded enough to encourage emotional investment. Character interactions strengthen that atmosphere considerably. Residents throughout Whaleville bring personality to the experience through conversations that shift naturally between humor and sincerity. Dialogue does not exist merely to deliver objectives or explain mechanics. Instead, conversations help reveal the personality of the city itself. Some interactions lean into awkward comedy while others introduce reflective moments that give the world emotional depth beneath its unusual surface. The writing succeeds because it exercises restraint. A concept this strange could easily become exhausting if every moment attempted to outdo itself with increasingly bizarre ideas. Instead, the game balances humor with quieter moments that allow players to connect with Whaleville naturally. The world feels strange because it exists comfortably within its own rules rather than constantly trying to remind players how unusual it is. Visually, A Completely Fictional Story About a City Inside a Whale embraces warmth and charm over technical ambition. The art direction supports exploration beautifully, using inviting environments and soft visual design to reinforce the relaxed tone. Whaleville feels like a place designed for observation. Small details scattered throughout locations reward players who take time to slow down and pay attention. One of the game's strongest qualities is how effectively it handles pacing. Exploration-focused experiences sometimes struggle when they rely too heavily on atmosphere without giving players reasons to remain engaged. Here, discovery becomes the motivation. Every new location feels like an opportunity to uncover another strange detail, meet another unusual resident, or stumble into an unexpected interaction. Curiosity becomes progression. The game intentionally avoids traditional challenge structures. There is little emphasis on combat, demanding mechanics, or skill mastery. Players seeking fast-paced gameplay may initially struggle to connect with its quieter approach. The experience values mood and exploration above difficulty. That design decision will naturally appeal more strongly to players who enjoy slower narrative-driven adventures. What stands out most is the confidence behind its creativity. The developers fully commit to their unusual premise without feeling the need to overexplain every strange element. Whaleville remains mysterious in ways that strengthen immersion rather than create confusion. The game trusts players to explore, interpret, and appreciate its world naturally. A Completely Fictional Story About a City Inside a Whale succeeds because it understands that memorable worlds are not built entirely through scale or spectacle. They are built through atmosphere, personality, and thoughtful design. The combination of imaginative worldbuilding, charming dialogue, and peaceful exploration creates an experience that feels genuinely distinct. It may not satisfy players searching for intense mechanics or constant excitement, but for players willing to embrace its quieter rhythm, Whaleville offers an experience filled with imagination and warmth. It transforms an absurd premise into a memorable journey that stays with players long after exploration ends. Rating: 8/10
