It's good
A good mix of reactive turn based combat and Puzzle! I am not really familiar with a lot of Tsukumogami and am prety slow when it comes to puzzles so it wouldn't be my style to keep playing. However, the art is lovely, the music sounds great and while it's a bit dialogue-heavy, this is clearly made for those who enjoy that sort of thing. Definitely recommend if you like any of these: calligraphy, japanese folklore, puzzles, reactive combat and Tsukumogami.
The story is fine. Typical good vs evil stuff. Might need a walkthrough to get the best/worst ending because of a lot of optional stuff that's tracked. The gameplay is fine. Exploration, random encounters and turn-based combat. Capturing enemies and slotting them to gain various abilities and creating OP combos gives it some strategic depth. The soundtrack is nuts and lives rent-free in my head to this day. The composer used traditional japanese instruments together with electric guitar and drums instrumental rock and went way harder than he needed to.
If international folklore peaks your interest this is a great game for that. The storytelling is well done and the gameplay is creative. For people studying japanese the japanese copy of the game can help you with some words, actually but they're very obscure historical ones in some cases so you may need a guide for that.
The last time I played this was..... 2013. Over 10 years ago. I remember nothing about it, but my notes say I liked it. So, I'll give it a recommendation.
This game still has a lot of bugs that induce either freezes or crashes. But I save often and I power through it, because it's just that lovely. I really like the word-guessing mini-games to identify each little critter! And they are all absolutely creepily adorable. I'm about half-way through and I'm really enjoying myself. I bought this game maybe a decade ago, it was about time I came around to it! No regrets.
The story is good. The music is also good. The battle system is fun at first, but at some point it can be very time consuming or repetitive depending of your equipment or character.
This game has been on my backburner for the better half of a decade, and its alphanumeric arrangement means it's among the first games I've seen, but now that I've played it I am relieved to say it sucks. Imagine a family game of charades, except your relative beats you each time you screw up. You can hit back but it doesn't do lasting damage. And the hints are borderline useless. That traumatic experience summarizes my time playing 99 Spirits. A game that some may take part in but is simply just not for everyone, and particularly not me.
Definitely a neat experience, the process of identifying spirits is interesting but winds up becoming simple, could do for a little more variety. Combat starts off simple but later the game adds a monster collecting aspect to increase the complexity. Overall a good game.
