9 Lives To Escape, developed and published by LapaGames, is a precision platformer built around a straightforward but demanding concept that emphasizes reflexes, timing, and persistence. The game follows the familiar philosophy of classic arcade platformers where success is not determined by upgrades or complex mechanics, but by the player’s ability to master movement through repetition and practice. At its core, the experience is about navigating a series of carefully constructed levels filled with traps, spikes, and dangerous obstacles while controlling a small cat determined to survive each challenge. The premise revolves around the well-known myth that cats possess nine lives, and the game cleverly incorporates this idea directly into its gameplay structure. Each level grants the player exactly nine attempts to reach the exit. Every mistake—whether falling into spikes, missing a jump, or colliding with a hazard—costs one life. Once all nine lives are lost, the level must be restarted from the beginning. This mechanic creates a constant tension during each stage, as players must balance speed with caution while trying to conserve their limited chances. Gameplay unfolds in a traditional 2D side-scrolling format, where players guide the cat through a series of obstacle-filled environments. The main actions consist of running and jumping, but the difficulty arises from how these basic mechanics interact with the traps scattered throughout each level. Platforms are often narrow, hazards appear in quick succession, and jumps must be timed with precision. Even simple sections can become surprisingly challenging when a single mistake leads to immediate failure. As players progress through the game, the level design becomes increasingly demanding. Early stages serve as introductions to the game’s mechanics, allowing players to become comfortable with the controls and pacing. However, later levels introduce tighter platforming sequences, more complex hazard patterns, and sections that require quick reactions. These stages test not only the player’s ability to control the character but also their patience and willingness to learn from repeated failures. The control system plays a critical role in maintaining fairness within such a demanding structure. Movement is responsive and immediate, allowing players to make quick adjustments in midair and react rapidly to unexpected obstacles. This responsiveness ensures that when a mistake occurs, it usually feels like the result of player error rather than flawed mechanics. Over time, as players become more familiar with the controls, they begin to develop a rhythm that allows them to navigate even the most difficult sections with greater confidence. Level design focuses heavily on compact challenges that require careful planning. Many stages are relatively short but densely packed with obstacles, making every movement important. Players often need to observe the layout of a level before attempting to rush through it, memorizing the positions of traps and planning the safest route to the exit. This design encourages repeated attempts, where each failure provides information that helps players perform better during the next run. Visually, 9 Lives To Escape adopts a colorful pixel-art style that reinforces its retro-inspired gameplay. The graphics are simple but effective, using bright environments and clear visual elements to ensure that players can easily identify platforms and hazards. The cat protagonist stands out clearly against the background, making it easy to track the character’s movement during fast-paced platforming sections. Although the visual style is modest, it captures the charm associated with classic indie platformers. The audio design complements the gameplay with energetic music and straightforward sound effects. Each jump, collision, or lost life is accompanied by clear audio feedback, helping players stay aware of their actions during intense moments. The background soundtrack maintains a lively tone that supports the game’s quick pacing, though it remains relatively simple compared to larger platforming titles. Despite its enjoyable challenge, the game’s overall structure remains quite minimal. The core gameplay loop does not change significantly as players progress, and the mechanics introduced early in the experience remain largely the same throughout the entire game. While the difficulty increases steadily, some players may wish for additional mechanics or variations to keep the experience feeling fresh. However, the simplicity of the design also allows the game to focus entirely on precision gameplay. For players who enjoy mastering difficult platforming sections and gradually improving their skills, the experience can be highly rewarding. Completing a level after multiple attempts often provides a strong sense of accomplishment, especially when navigating particularly demanding sequences of jumps and hazards. Another aspect that appeals to dedicated players is the potential for replayability. Because levels are built around efficient movement and precise timing, players may attempt to complete them more quickly after mastering the layout. This creates an opportunity for self-imposed challenges such as speedrunning or finishing stages with minimal mistakes. Ultimately, 9 Lives To Escape is a straightforward but engaging precision platformer that succeeds by focusing on tight controls and challenging level design. While it may not introduce groundbreaking mechanics or expansive content, it delivers exactly what it promises: a skill-based platforming experience where perseverance and practice lead to improvement. Players who appreciate demanding arcade-style challenges will likely find satisfaction in guiding the determined cat through each dangerous stage. Rating: 7/10
Very fun game but needs more work done. Music would be nice. Restart button as level 2 isn't finished so after you fall... that's your game done :) 7 mins of playtime currently but won't refund to help the dev's.
You’re not here to chill. This is basically the Dark Souls of platformers, dammit. Last time I died this much was in "I Wanna Be the Boshy." Sure, I ran into a couple bugs, but nothing game-breaking. Either way, it’s a fun little game to burn through over a couple of evenings.
A great game for those who love old-school aesthetics! Rating: 9 out of 9 lives 🐾
Tough, cozy, pixelated. A classic in a modern shell. Not for the faint-hearted, but if you love platformers - a must play.
Just finished this brutal little gem and wow - it's exactly what hardcore platformer fans have been craving. The pixel-perfect jumps and deadly traps will test every ounce of your patience and skill. Having only 9 lives per level creates this incredible tension where every mistake actually matters. The controls are tight and responsive, which is crucial for a game this unforgiving. The pixel art style is charming and reminds me of classic SEGA platformers, but don't let the cute cat fool you - this game will humble you quickly. Sure, it's frustrating as hell when you lose all 9 lives and have to restart the entire level, but that's exactly what makes finally beating it so satisfying. It's like the developers took the DNA of Super Meat Boy and Celeste and cranked the difficulty up to 11. Minor complaint: could really use a settings menu for customization options. But honestly, for what it is - a pure, no-frills test of platforming skills - it delivers perfectly. If you're looking for a chill gaming experience, look elsewhere. But if you want to prove you've got what it takes and don't mind dying... a lot... then this orange furball will give you exactly the challenge you're seeking. Rating: 8/9 lives (lost one to my own stubbornness)
