270 | Two Seventy US Election

Well, I've played this game on mobile and steam for a number of years now and I think it deserves a review. Two Seventy is a very interesting game concept. It blends the highstakes world of betting in a unique way with political campaigning. Despite the great concept however, it leaves much to be desired to make it a truly great game. My biggest critique of it would have to be the pushy advertising for features you would expect even in a free mobile game. It won't allow you to play as politicians as prominent as Kamala Harris and doesn't even allow you to change the difficulty without throwing a few dollars their way. Although it offers a subscription service in lieu of its ridiculous one off purchase prices for characters, that too comes to far too much money for anyone who casually enjoys this game to pay. It has no form of in-game currency and essentially no way whatsoever to progress without paying. Its AI lacks a bit in certain areas during specific points of the game, trying to surpass you in states that they haven't challenged you in at all up until this point on the turn before the ballot and I suspect the way in which you select the characters in the beginning determines which one will actually challenge you while the other will just lag behind the whole time. I also didn't have much luck in random match making but maybe I just didn't try connecting at the right times of day. Was a great deal of fun to play with friends though! Really great concept overall but I feel it could have been achieved in a way that felt it rewarded players and respected them by offering them stuff for continuing to prop up the community. Would recommend but only if you have friends to play with or you really enjoy spending money.

I had over 300 electoral votes by turn 14. You know, the point where most games are supposed to end. Any normal election game would say “okay, you won.” Not this one. Instead, it dragged on for 27 turns, let the AI magically come back, and somehow handed them the win at 287 for a win after I was dominating most of the game. So what’s the point of hitting 270 if it doesn’t matter? Nothing is ever “locked.” States flip nonstop in the late game, the AI gets obvious comeback boosts, and the whole thing turns into RNG instead of strategy. You can play well, build a huge lead, and still lose because the game decides it wants to be “dramatic.” If you want a REAL election simulator stay away from this one!
