This game is a childhood favourite.
Brings back so many awesome memories as a kid.
⭐ Nota pessoal: 7.5/10
UMA NOSTAGIA
18 Wheels of Steel: Convoy represents a formative era in trucking simulation, arriving at a time when the genre was still experimenting with structure, pacing, and identity. Developed by SCS Software and published by Cosmi Valusoft, it builds on the foundation laid by earlier entries while introducing more dynamic road interactions and a greater emphasis on business progression. The game places players in the role of a long-haul trucker traveling across a condensed version of North America, taking deliveries, selecting contracts, and gradually establishing a financial foothold in the transport industry. Unlike later SCS titles, which lean toward realism and meditative driving, Convoy maintains a noticeable arcade edge—faster pacing, more aggressive AI, and game systems that push players toward active route management rather than leisurely cross-country cruising. The result is a trucking simulator that feels more energetic and intentionally gamified, reflecting its mid-2000s PC gaming origins. Driving remains the core experience, and Convoy delivers a blend of simulation and accessibility. Steering feels weighty enough to convey the physical mass of eighteen-wheelers, but physics remain forgiving, making the game approachable for players unfamiliar with truck handling. Road layouts are simple, traffic patterns are predictable, and environmental hazards—tight turns, narrow off-ramps, unexpected vehicle behavior—serve more as gameplay challenges than realistic representations of highway driving. The standout mechanic is the convoy system, where rival trucking companies compete for the same cargo deliveries, sometimes even appearing on the road to “race” the player to a drop-off. This injects urgency and unpredictability into otherwise straightforward jobs, forcing drivers to balance speed with caution, since damage, ticketing, or overturned cargo directly cut into profits. The feature gives Convoy a distinctive identity within the franchise, offering moments of rivalry and adrenaline not present in later, more relaxed SCS titles. Outside of the driving itself, progression revolves around financial management, route selection, and cargo prioritization. Players begin with modest equipment and limited route access but gradually expand their reach by earning money, purchasing new trucks, and unlocking additional cities. The economic system isn’t deeply complex, yet it provides enough structure to motivate continued play—contracts vary in payout, distance, fragility, and delivery timing, encouraging players to weigh risk versus reward. Fuel, repairs, and fines chip away at profit margins, and while the management layer lacks modern simulation depth, it succeeds in grounding the player’s journey in tangible goals and consequences. The pacing also suits short play sessions, as jobs rarely overstay their welcome, and progress feels steady even without grinding. The audiovisual presentation reflects both technological limitations and stylistic choices of its release era. Environments are simple but readable, consisting of wide highways, sparse cities, deserts, forests, and farmland stitched together into a functional map. Buildings and landscapes lack fine detail, but their abstraction lends them a nostalgic charm, and the game maintains visual clarity even on low-spec hardware. Trucks are the most visually detailed assets, capturing model silhouettes and mechanical heft even if textures are dated by modern standards. The soundtrack leans into country, rock, and road-friendly instrumentals that complement long drives, while ambient noise—engine rumbles, shifting gears, passing traffic—helps establish immersion. Despite its age, the game retains a distinctive audio personality that contributes to its atmosphere of ongoing travel. AI behavior, however, reveals the game’s era more clearly. Traffic vehicles sometimes brake unpredictably, merge without signaling, or block intersections, often resulting in preventable collisions or fines. Rival companies, while mechanically interesting, can feel rubber-banded and artificially competitive. These quirks can lead to frustration, especially during long-haul deliveries with high-value cargo. The map’s compression also means road networks sometimes feel unnaturally direct, removing complexity and environmental variation players may expect from modern simulations. Yet many fans view these imperfections as part of the game’s rugged personality rather than outright flaws—they reinforce that Convoy aims for engaging gameplay rather than unwavering realism. Looking back, 18 Wheels of Steel: Convoy holds an important place in SCS Software’s evolution. It bridges early trucking sims—defined by novelty and experimentation—and the studio’s later titles, which pursue authenticity, scale, and fidelity. While American Truck Simulator and Euro Truck Simulator 2 have since refined the formula, Convoy’s lively pacing, competitive delivery system, and arcade flavor give it a distinct flavor that still resonates with long-time fans. It remains approachable, replayable, and surprisingly charming, especially for players who appreciate retro PC sims or miss the more game-like structure of early trucking titles. For modern audiences, the game may feel dated in visuals, systems, and physics, but it offers a window into the genre’s developmental history and still succeeds as a straightforward, engaging trucking experience. Veterans of the series, nostalgia-driven players, or those seeking a faster, more competitive alternative to modern truck sims will likely find enjoyment in its simplicity and personality. 18 Wheels of Steel: Convoy may not be the most polished or realistic trucking simulation, but it delivers something equally valuable—momentum, challenge, and the enduring appeal of life on the road.
