One of, if not, THE best games I've played as of late. The plot, the characters, the style, even the music is all really good. I love how this game looks, the facial animations look a little "odd" at first but I feel like it's perfect for a game like this and I wouldn't have it any other way. The voice acting I thought was top notch, you really feel Mark when he's angry and when he's losing his marbles. He is truly the most pathetic man on earth, just as described. My favorite kinda guy. The dynamic between Mark and Sean grew on me. They're fun characters, more so, fun to watch suffer. They bicker and they banter and you'll wonder if they're even friends. But just like everything in this game, their friendship is a trainwreck and it works for them. There are a lot of beautiful shots in this game. The surreal environments can be so beautiful in a very abstract kind of way. The character designs for some characters are simple but still very interesting. And most of all I enjoyed the writing. It's a very well written game with quirky dialogue. It can be really funny when it wants to be, really vague when it needs to be, and very emotional as well. I mean... They have a drink brand called Aloca-Coc, and Jag-offs beef jerky, man. I love to jag-off and have Aloca-Coc! Sometimes I like just chilling in the main menu for a bit to enjoy the music. It's a vibe! All in all, this game is fantastic and you'd be a fool not to give it a try. It's a treat. It can be intense at times, but as intense as it can be, I wouldn't say it's really that scary. Your enemies in this game are The mascot for Peperami, The Animal, basically. But somehow this game mixes goofy scary really well. Highly recommended if you love abstract psychological horror with a good story, interesting visuals, great music, campy humor, tank-controls for that classic feel, and you love your MC going THROUGH IT. Mark Stetson, you are the car crash I can't look away from. Happy spiraling.
An adventure game that fails in the execution of its horror elements due to consistent tone problems, unlikeable characters, and a poor, also somewhat unclear, telling of its story. Play as Mark - the MC - with his buddy Sean, hiking the Appalachia Trail in search of a local legend called the Ant Farm, a place that can make your wish come true should you reach its center. Collect puzzle items, keys, and numerous forms of lore items as you make your way through the game; some lore items give Mark visions that you can watch, but are often unclear in their message or meaning. Creatures from another plane of existence will pursue the two hikers through the woods, as well as the Ant Farm itself, with only one instance of these creatures feeling like any kind of actual threat. Much of the horror and seriousness being attempted by 10 Dead Doves is completely thrown out the window by poorly attempted moments of comedy, creating a consistent tone problem from beginning to end. In terms of the story, it ends up being a somewhat vague and muddled affair, making elements of it unclear in its telling. Mark has been a pretty huge ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ his whole life, alienating his wife (who may or may not be dead) and daughter in the process. Apparently Mark is also terminally ill with only three or four months left to live, but the game never elaborates on what sort of illness Mark might have. Mark's behaviour makes him pretty unlikeable as a character, feeling no amount of sympathy or any real empathy towards his plight, the game just doubling down on him being absolutely awful the more it goes on. As events unfold, it is revealed that the Ant Farm is a facility which has discovered a place, and beings, from what seems to be another dimension of existence that is influencing our own. Beings from this plane of existence are working on something called the Magnum Opus, which, with the aid of mortals from our own realm, can be used to grant the wish of a singular being; in this case being Mark's desire to see his own daughter again before he dies. To discuss the ending a wee bit, you are given two choices at the end of the game, pretty much letting you choose how it ends; going down
and letting Mark see his daughter hanging from a tree in a more Faustian way of granting his wish
or climbing a ladder,
where Mark will cut out his tongue, removing his ability to speak harm to those around him, letting him escape from the Ant Farm to make contact with his daughter again in the real world.
I would say there was maybe a good four hours so or left in 10 Dead Doves, and I was absolutely checked out, ready and actively willing for it to end. Audio is something I wanted to bring up as a major point, as whoever did the mixing on audio levels did a terribly poor job. Volume for character voices is all over the place, sometimes being extremely quiet, other times screaming like crazy, then being somewhere in between; I eventually gave up mucking about with my speaker volume constantly, just reading the subtitles for about half the game. Puzzles are pretty standard adventure fair, being rather simple in their execution. There are a series of light panel puzzles that are short and sweet, but there are multiple path-based puzzles that reset you to the beginning of a zone if you don't choose the right path that I quickly became tired of. There are bits of litter you can collect throughout the game, not seeming to have any real purpose or reward other than being able to collect it. I really enjoyed the demo for 10 Dead Doves when I played it back in the day, but after experiencing the full product, I absolutely wish I had refunded it - it didn't do it for me at all, being something I actively disliked after a few hours of play. This is a game I would firmly recommend passing on. I liked it. I really liked it. I've been having a tendency to sour games for myself, drift into a disappointed reluctant disdain for a game. This game remains one I love, it was just that good enough I guess for my evil eye.
Alan Wake + Silent Hill + Twin Peaks =
Best gaming experience featuring dead birds in years.
"What a traumatic experience, I guess that means it's a good time to crack a joke and ruin the atmosphere!" I only became aware of 10 Dead Doves after it had finished its Kickstarter rounds, but was lured in by the atmosphere on display, along with the interesting visual style. My expectation of an atmospheric horror-tinted puzzle game were not quite met, however, as the game quite rapidly devolved into something truly strange. While the game itself does a rather poor job of explaining its premise, 10 Dead Doves puts you in the shoes of Mark somewhere in the Appalachian mountains as he searches for the Ant Farm of urban legend, which is just another wish-granter. Mark might have ruined his marriage, failed his kid and all his loved ones and also he might be dying of something, so he's got reason to be desperate. A solid chunk of the game is built upon experiencing Marks friendship with his travel buddy Sean, which is so laden with incomprehensible in-jokes and constantly swings from ruthless insults to heartfelt apologies, that I found it impossible to take seriously. The games art style also doesn't do it many favors here. Despite its retro-stylized environments managing the occasionally moody atmosphere nicely, the facial animations riddled with excessive faux-PS1 texture warping and especially the close-up zooms utterly wreck any kind of emotional moments the game tries to build up to. The games only really successful moments as a horror game come in the briefest moments where it allows the player glimpses of something moving just off-screen, only for the game to later fully and without any restriction reveal the jankily animated monsters chasing you, at which point I couldn't help but laugh at the kind of horror even Scooby Doo pulled off better. When it comes to sound the game is also a rather mixed bag. The voice acting suffers of the indie game issue where different actors fail to maintain a cohesive theme and quality and the audio mixing varies wildly between scenes and characters. The protagonist, whom we hear the most from, struggles with over-acting in many of his scenes to a point where, once again, all drama is lost to the delivery. The music of the game does deserve a positive note, with some tracks standing well above the quality of the rest of the game and managing to salvage moments of atmosphere and mood from this mess. As for the story and overall experience, I couldn't tell you much. There are so many fake-outs, loose threads, false narratives and maddening mix-ups of what is and isn't real, all combined with a whole mess of confusing flashbacks that all seem to rely on the player having some existing information of the characters that the player has no way of having, that towards the end I just gave up on the story. There are mysterious creatures, government conspiracies, the story premise of the STALKER games' wish granter, a failed marriage plotline told to us mostly through allegories and puppets and I am sure all of this made complete sense to the writers, but sadly almost none of it made sense to me. In the end I cannot really recommend the experience to anyone. 10 Dead Doves is maybe half an hour or solid ideas padded out to about six to eight hours of total runtime and a quantity of padding that I can't recall seeing in years. So, so very many pointless maze sections... Playtime: 6+ hours (A single playthrough) Ratings (1-10) Visual: 5 Audio: 6 Story: 3 Gameplay: 2 Overall: 3
I am quite fond of the hat man (and like, every character really) the art this game has is such eye candy to me man you would not BELIEVE
