Developed and published by Twilight Sonata Studio, Zuma Girls is a colorful arcade puzzle game that builds upon the familiar marble-shooting formula while introducing light role-playing elements and anime-inspired presentation. Instead of being a straightforward recreation of classic marble-matching games, it incorporates character abilities, progression mechanics, and a small cast of heroines that give the experience a slightly different identity. The combination may not radically transform the genre, but it provides enough variety to make each session feel more engaging than a simple clone. The gameplay revolves around firing colored marbles into moving chains to create matches and eliminate them before they reach their destination. While the controls remain intuitive and easy to learn, the addition of RPG-style skills encourages players to think beyond quick reactions. Properly timing special abilities can help recover from mistakes or overcome more difficult stages, adding a welcome layer of strategy to the otherwise familiar gameplay loop. The mechanics are simple enough for newcomers to understand, yet satisfying enough to reward players who become more efficient as the campaign progresses. The adventure unfolds across nine distinct stages, each presenting different layouts and increasingly demanding challenges. Rather than overwhelming players from the beginning, the game gradually raises the difficulty by introducing more complex marble paths and faster-paced sequences that require sharper accuracy and better decision-making. This steady progression creates a satisfying learning curve that keeps the campaign entertaining from beginning to end without becoming excessively punishing for casual audiences. One of the game's strongest selling points is its anime-inspired visual style. The three featured heroines are illustrated with vibrant artwork that complements the bright environments and colorful gameplay. The character designs give the game personality and help separate it from more generic puzzle titles. Players who enjoy anime aesthetics will likely appreciate the collection of original illustrations included throughout the experience. Although the game contains mature-themed artwork featuring adult characters, the visual content remains secondary to the puzzle gameplay rather than replacing it. The soundtrack also contributes positively to the overall package. Featuring more than ten original music tracks, the game maintains an energetic atmosphere that matches the fast pace of marble shooting. The music blends well with the colorful visuals, creating an enjoyable arcade-like presentation without becoming repetitive during longer play sessions. Combined with polished sound effects and responsive gameplay, the audiovisual design succeeds in keeping the action lively. Additional Steam features such as achievements, trading cards, Steam Cloud support, and Family Sharing add extra value beyond the main campaign. Completionists have additional objectives to pursue, while cloud saving provides convenient access across multiple devices. These features may not significantly alter the gameplay itself, but they enhance the overall user experience and demonstrate thoughtful integration with the Steam platform. Despite its strengths, Zuma Girls does have limitations. The RPG mechanics remain relatively light and never evolve into a deeply customizable progression system, meaning players seeking extensive character development may find the experience somewhat shallow. Likewise, the campaign's modest number of stages makes it a fairly short adventure, leaving replayability to depend primarily on improving scores or revisiting favorite levels. Those looking for substantial post-game content may finish everything the title has to offer rather quickly. Overall, Zuma Girls is an enjoyable blend of classic marble-shooting action and accessible RPG-inspired mechanics wrapped in an appealing anime presentation. It successfully modernizes a proven gameplay formula without sacrificing the fast-paced simplicity that made the genre popular in the first place. While its short length and limited progression prevent it from standing among the deepest puzzle games available, it delivers an entertaining and polished experience that should satisfy fans of casual arcade titles and anime-themed games alike. Rating: 8/10
While the idea of creating a Zuma-like + RPG game sounds interesting on paper, in reality, in this particular implementation, they don't fit together. In addition, we encounter typical problems of games of this kind: - Not all interface elements are translated into English, and remain in Chinese, making the menu difficult to understand. - The ball sprites' movement logic is buggy; sometimes they overlap, and sometimes they diverge, which impairs gameplay.
