Its a cute little game - quite simple, but still fun.
I'm still playing through and learning about this game, but so far I have found it really enjoyable! Normally I wait to review a game until I've experienced all it has to offer for me, but as this one is still quite new, I thought I would take the time to give it a review now with my current thoughts. I first added this game to my wishlist when I saw it (I believe off a steam "if you like" page for another simulator type game), because I was a big fan of Zoo Tycoon, and any game that has an ounce of the joy that Zoo Tycoon brought me every day is worth checking out. I was happy with the pricepoint of the game, I felt like it was a reasonable price for the amount of content I'd be getting from it, and even picked it up on a small introductory sale, which was nice! The graphics of the game are nothing too out of the world, but they fit the aesthetic of the game, and match what's seen in the trailer and screenshots; a little cartoony and goofy, but cute! You start off each level with a small little diary entry describing someone's thoughts as they "prepare for their first day as an intern" at the new zoo. It doesn't really relate to the overall gameplay, but works as a loading screen of sorts to add just a little flavor. You work as an omniscient Zoo Manager, more than as a Zookeeper yourself, hiring employees, designing enclosures for the animals, and what you want the layout of the zoo to be. It is very reminiscent in some ways of Zoo Tycoon, though again, much more cartoon-y. You start with a small sum of money, but earn more from visitors. Primary gameplay involves balancing unlocking new content (new staff, new animals, new environments) with keeping enough money to ensure you keep your animals and visitors happy. You earn the "stars" to unlock new rewards by doing small goals you're given in a corner of your screen. Many of them repeat (find a lost item, pay an employee, etc.), and all are simple and straightforward. There is a series of maps you can unlock, which gives you some sense of progression, though as far as I know you can return to your earlier zoos anytime to improve upon them. Overall, I found the gameplay very simplistic, very much pointing and clicking and managing type of game, rather than an animal caretaker type of game. That said, for the price the game is, I feel the content is very reasonable and I've enjoyed setting up my zoos. The only major negative I have with the game is that the animals will nearly constantly make noises, even while you're in build mode, or even paused; at this point I'm considering muting the audio just because it's a little annoying, especially after a longer period of time. Less frequent and maybe varied animal sounds would ease a lot of that The other thing I'll mention as well, though I don't find it particularly a negative based on the type of game, is that the placement of enclosures and pathways can feel a bit awkward when you first get started. After a little while I managed to get the hang of it, though. I was more expecting to find something akin to the click and drag that I most often used in zoo tycoon, whereas here you place the enclosure and then stretch it at post points to fit the space you want. For pathways, you place small circular stepping stones along the path, rather than an entire individual path, which actually works better for understanding the pathing of the npcs. My final recommendation would definitely be a positive: for a very reasonable price this game is fun, and evokes a little of what I liked in Zoo Tycoon. If you're on the fence or unsure if you'll like the game, I'd definitely recommend picking it up on sale and at least trying it out.
The game is extremely hard to navigate. Moving around the screen is difficult, and building is even harder. The settings do not help. And there is an awful motion blur whenever you move that cannot be turned off. I had to quit the game after 30 minutes because of the frustration of attempting to build and move around, and getting nauseous from the motion blur. I would not recommend this game to anyone. Even though the graphics are cute, the game needs to be fixed, because it's nearly unplayable with the design.
This is a fun, laid-back management sim at a great price. If you enjoy other zoo building or city building games, you should try this one out. It's similar to other indie games in the genre and reminds me of the game Parkasaurus (zoo building for dinos). It's a fairly short and small game when compared to something like Planet Zoo but it's also a very affordable game (less than $7 during a sale). There are also quite a few items to use to decorate the exhibits and zoo as you progress. More than I expected from a game at this price.
