"Yokai Rescue" is one of literally thousands of retro 2D platformers infesting Steam and lowering the average quality of all video games everywhere... and I'm not kidding. Searching for "platformers" on the Steam store page yields over 17,000 results! Is this one of the best of those? Absolutely not. This is a very mediocre furry friendly pixelcrap platformer featuring a grappling hook mechanism, some cringey e-book/visual novel writing, and nothing of value for gamers. It was a dismal flop on Steam Direct... see below for the embarrassingly bad player counts. Platforming is an old, mostly dead genre, and this lacklustre experience, while it doesn't have an upfront cost, isn't saving the genre... it's no surprise this failed to capture any attention from gamers in the era of immersive 3D gaming. This features really godawful pixelcrap "art" instead of real graphics. It's hard to say if this was because the developer didn't have the skill to do the job of creating 3D visuals, or couldn't afford to hire someone who does, but it also doesn't matter. What matters is that this looks much worse than most other games because of that decision, and that's a major deterrent to gamers. Games like Terraria and Stardew Valley succeeded despite the bad graphics, not because of them. Insultingly, the developer insists that you should play this with a console peasant children's toy gamepad instead of KB+M. Developers should try to be aware which platform they're designing games for. It's the responsibility of the developer to ensure the game runs well on the platform they're selling it on, with the primary peripherals that PC gamers use. Now on to pricing and value for gamers. This is "free" enough (not every "free" game in the "free" section is truly free, there's usually some hidden price tag), at least you won't be expected to spend any more money after you download this, but just because something is free doesn't mean it's good, and the cost of a game is more than just financial, your time is valuable too. In terms of public reception, this failed. There's over 130 million unique gamers visiting Steam every month. SteamDB showed the game peaked at only 4 concurrent players... this is a dismal public reception. This was so bad they couldn't even give it away. Since free games don't contribute to your game collector badge and other profile stuff, is this a worthwhile addition to your Steam library? This is a hard pass. There's no immediate financial commitment, but there are thousands of more compelling games on the platform that will give you a lot more enjoyment for your time.

Yokai Rescue is a quaint little game about a cute kitsune, not just one of the few (male) kitsune protagonists in gaming, but also one of the remaining few Yokai after robotic beings known as the Selvo took over their mystical tree, and sapped it of it's mystical power, killing and preventing them from resurrecting (or something). It's up to you to go through some stages with a pretty smooth difficulty curve to reach the heart of the tree and get rid of all the nasty Selvo influence (why yes, it's a cyberpunk setting, with a bit of eastern dungeonpunk). It's not character action, but it is a platformer of sorts, with a simple combat structure that gets the job done (although I can totally picture them in some indie ip platform fighter.) You use a energy rope to zip towards grapple points, and a dash, which when set properly, doubles as your pierce, where you become fox fire and bolt through your foes. The latter stages have more tricky elements, like timed gates, and zero gravity, with the final boss being a particularly strenuous encounter. The characters are all well designed, and it's short enough to be beaten within an hour. I also reccomend respawning if you think you are about to die :) Play this game when you get the chance. I'm curious to see what Seiki can do after 1000 years, if you catch my drift.
A short game that is great to play through, but could be even better The grappling and dashing sensations are immaculate except for the grappling range being unsure (you have to be almost exactly aiming at the hook to use it), some ennemies such as the laser flies and the teleporting flies seems kind of unfair, along with the dash slowmo, which will sometimes make you able to pass through lasers kind of like an invicibility, and sometimes makes you lose all momentum and take damage. This all is sadly very felt in the end bossfight where navigating is painful during the last phase because of the aforementioned problems. But I recommend it, the story is simple yet entertaining, the artistic direction feels great to look at, the character portraits are well drawn, and when you get the hang of the commands you can do some pretty cool tricks. If it was longer and with ab it more polish, it's surely a game I'd be willing to pay for !
Excellent flow !
