This is a gem of a game. It's a fast-paced retro maze game, with 16-bit visuals (think Atari ST) and 8-bit sound (think C64). You control an eyeball that shoots lasers (this is the kind of thing we did all the time in the 1980s!), and traverse various mazes full of enemies - while continuously needing to collect items to replenish time and ammo. When you defeat enemies, sometimes they drop a letter X - collect 10 of those, and you get a new level. Enemies continually spawn, so each level gets gradually harder the longer you spend in it. Each new level brings new enemies, or level hazards. As a player, you need to adapt your style, and this keeps the game fresh. Every 5 levels there's a Pacman-esque bonus stage, where you collect dots and avoid enemies. At certain point scores, you get an extra life. I can't say the game feels like an innovation, but it is a nostalgia-fest. The graphics are clear, the music is pleasant (if you're into retro chiptunes, at least!). It's a good, solid first game by this developer, and it's at a decent price. I recommend it to any retro game fans, especially ones that want an arcade-style challenge.
The game is pretty fun, and reminds me of a mixture between Battle City (NES) and the original Pac-Man. The controls are responsive, the graphics are simple yet intuitive and the gameplay is actually pretty decent. The downside is that the game gets pretty repetitive after a while, so play it in small bursts.
Great Retro game Gameplay: Easy to learn, hard to master. At first it does not seem so difficult, but from phase 8 everything starts to get complicated ... AND THERE ARE 30 PHASES !!! So far I have only managed to reach 15, and it seems that in each phase a new enemy or trap appears. The enemies are very varied in their behavior. You also have to worry about collecting ammo, time and points, because every 5000 points you will earn 1up. You can also use bombs, and they are very difficult to replace, because you must complete the word "EXPLOSIVE" collecting letters. The co-op mode is really challenging and fun. Graphics: Very simple. Pixel retro style. Not bad, but they could be better. It is the loosest aspect of the game. Sound: Music is another pretty good aspect. It is very rhythmic and fits very well with the retro essence. And the sound effects are normal, maybe some quite squeaky. Control: Good. It works with keyboard and controller. Difficulty: High, but without becoming impossible. History: ?????? Additional features: It only has one achievement ... but let's see who is the one who manages to unlock it !!! I recommend this game to everyone who likes old arcades. In addition to good and challenging, it is very cheap. It is a game that you will play among other major games, and that you will play again over time, even if it is a couple of games. A little gem at a great price, especially considering the many attempts you will need to finish this ..
A simple, yet fun arcade experience. It has some minor issues, feels a little clunky turning corners, which can get you killed. Likewise with enemies traveling through the screen wrap tunnels, it's hard to keep track of the opposite side of the screen so you can easily get hit by an off-screen enemy appearing right in front of you suddenly. For all the inspiration it takes from Pac-Man, it fails to address those issues the way Pac-Man cleverly did. One other odd thing is that there is little incentive to want to proceed to the next phase, as there is no phase clear bonus or anything that awards you points, and future enemy types are worth the same number of points as well. The bonus rooms are the only reason to consider advancing phases except for the spawn rate of enemies (maybe?) If you can stay on top of the enemies, it may be a valid strategy to stay on phase 1 collecting gold. As for the core gameplay, it's solid. I do wish I didn't have to pick up ammo so frequently, enemies have too much health in my opinion. It feels like an eternity to kill a single enemy, and when the room starts to get crowded, it's simply too much to deal with. Ammo runs out so quickly and you spend the rest of the phase just searching for ammo and taking quick shots at enemies passing by. The room layouts start out alright but by phase 9 it gets ridiculous. It becomes way too hard to pick up necessary items without getting cornered. Even killing enemies is extremely challenging because of how many hits it takes to kill them, and since it's very tight narrow corners every where, you won't get much opportunity to kill them. Some small issues exist with enemy spawning too, the animation that plays before an enemy spawns is sometimes too fast to really react to. This can cause you to walk into an enemy with less than a second to react to their spawning in front of you. Additionally, enemies can spawn underneath item pickups, and you might barely see it happening, so that's something to look out for. Lastly, the game is forced fullscreen, and it looks like the graphics weren't designed for widescreen, so it's a bit stretched looking, and has a forced scanline filter too. these are odd choices for a PC game on Steam. I'd like to be able to adjust those options myself, as i'm sure many other PC gamers do too. With a game like this, where you gotta pay attention to the entire screen, it would help to play in a smaller window as fullscreen is too much visual space to pay attention to everything quickly. It's still a decent experience though. Worth the try if you get it cheap enough and are into classic 80's arcade games. The musics pretty groovy too.

Great retro game. 9/10 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tubAxLiAY5o&feature=youtu.be
7/10 – A slow boiler, but ultimately, highly effective

Disclaimer: Disclaimer:This game's developer/publisher reached out to me & asked if I was willing to review their title. This review is also a shortened version of what you'd find on my review blog, Gao Li Occasionally Reviews, to fit Steam’s 4000 character limit. You can also check out my Steam curation under Gaos Corner
Xeyyex is the debut production of a small Indian developer, Ferulox Studios & made using the Game Maker Studio engine. Though its screenshots are highly reminiscent of Pac-Man, it actually is a shooter wherein players take on the roll of a round, one-eyed, orange monster that shoots laser beams at enemies. It's a humble video game, but those who have watched my stream will note that I find it highly amicable. That said, there's some good & some bad stuff I have to say about the project. I would like to start with the elements I didn't like, so that I can end on a high note.
UI Blues
In typical retro fashion, without any preparation (unless one reads the brief manual on the start menu), Xeyyex throws players into the adventure. That's where the first issue with the game makes itself known. The top portion of the screen is where one will find the User Interface, which quite frankly is a complete mess. The game requires players to keep track of a number of variables, all of which are noted upon on the top edge of the screen, though the way one is being told about them makes hardly any sense. Xeyyex has six metrics it tracks and the player has to collect items for all of them, yet the UI makes it hard for players to figure out what is needed to replenish which meter. This makes the rules of the game seem more confusing than they really are. In most other arcade styled games, the UI conveys information within the shortest time possible & with the least amount of eye movement required on the player's part. It would hve been nice if that had been adopted here.
A Potential Fix
All of this is a bit of a dampener, but not a deal breaker & can easily be fixed. It might have been good for "P1" & "P2" to be written on top of the respective UI. It would also have made sense to surround each player's interface by a box or frame to visually separate them instead of having one seamlessly go over into the other. What's more, the icons should have been more intuitive. For example, in Zelda, the health meter is represented by hearts & to replenish it, players collect hearts. It's easy to see the connection between those two elements without anyone having to explain it. In other words, since there is a timer in Xeyyex, instead of it being represented by the letter "T," it should have been the same clock icon players pick up & it should have been placed to the top center of the screen. Several of the number based stats could have also been replaced by bars, like the "X" to progress, for example, since those are more intuitive.
Performance & whatnot
All that said, I have to reiterate that the gameplay itself is good, fast paced, & wholly enjoyable. This is not a bad game. One can also play with both a keyboard as well as gamepads & the framerate stays at a comfortable 60 fps, the enemies have some variety to them, though all of it is self-explanatory, & whenever I died it felt more like it was my fault rather than the game's. The sound design as well is really great & the only complaint I have is that Ferulox Studios studios need to work a bit on their color coordination. The first bonus stage, for example, has a really painful to look at green tone that made me want to turn away. help
I already had this game because the developers had given me a key. even so I have bought it taking advantage of the price reduction. a great game. Fully recommended if you like pac-man256 or Bomberman style games. Very fun and difficult, and at a great price.
This game is really arcade-like and the graphics remind me of DOS games I had fun way back when. As you can see by the trailer, this game is easy to learn, but hard to master. Once you get a power-up, it immediately appears somewhere else in the stage, meaning that there is always 1 power-up of each type to get the points, time, and eye-beams going. The flow of the game is pretty interesting, making you look for power-ups when you can between enemy encounters; I personally like to stock-pile stuff early in the stage when there isn't so many spawned enemies around. I highly recommend at least trying the demo; if you like quirky arcade games and like it, the game is a very good price! Plus, the music in this game is REALLY good! Love it!
I'm a huge Pac-Man fan so when I see a maze game I try to give it a try. This is a mix of Pac-Man, Bomberman, and Tank. It's got new stuff, like being mindful of ammo collection, timing, and ingots, and I liked the fact that I can shoot while moving forward or backward. On the negative side, let's just say that co-op is more difficult than solitaire. Asteriskel Rating: * * * * * * *
