Overall, a neat little experiment, but nowhere near a finished game. There are some clear areas planned for future improvement, so if this game ever receives more development I'll revise my review. As-is, I sadly can't recommend it. The good:

Interesting level design. It's clear what's foreground and background, what platforms are jumpable, and even the "hidden" walls have a distinct look that doesn't immediately pop out. Great work here.
It's clear what's an enemy and what's a setpiece, since the enemies have a brighter color palette and also move.
The main character is distinct from everything else, so I never lost them on-screen.
Neat concept, I'd love to explore the ruin of an ancient science facility and see what happened to the recent (?) investigation team. Why am I here? What's going on? would genuinely like to see more of this.
The bad:

Tutorial text suggests diagonal aiming should be possible, but I wasn't able to get it to work. Either be more clear or actually allow diagonal shooting. Since the character model doesn't change to reflect aim direction until you shoot, I would recommend metroid-style arm movements, even when not shooting.
Extremely poor tutorialization. Did you know you have a ledge grab? An alert will take up most of the right of the screen when your gun is overheated, no matter how many times it happens, despite the overheat bar also being prominent and taking up half the top of the screen. This alert pops up for everything, when it should only pop up the first time then have a small alert for new logs/keys/etc. The action isn't frenetic enough that it ever becomes dangerous, but it is extremely annoying. Overall, the tutorials either hand-hold you way too much or you're not told anything at all.
Environmental hazard spikes and bee stings are nearly indistinguishable from background details, which leads to taking damage seemingly for no reason
Keybindings and menu are nearly incomprehensible. I accidentally unbound my mod and couldn't figure out how to re-bind it until the boss fight. Where the mouse works and where it doesn't isn't clear. How you navigate the menu via the arrow keys isn't clear, either.
Sometimes doors just won't open until you leave and come back. There is no indication why this happens (color or sprite-wise, they're identical to other doors of the type) so I legit can't tell if this is intended or not.
Some inputs carry over from the menu to the playable game, leading to what i thought was a freeze but was actually the game loading another screen while i was in the menu, leading to neither accepting inputs. Exiting the menu fixed this, but it kept happening.
It's an...okay student project. The pixel graphics are nice and I didn't experience any bugs while playing. Even for a completely unfinished game -it is a student project after all- it feels barebone and pretty uninspired. The core modules/augments are far from interesting. One is a map while the other lets you see health. Neither of which really engage the audience in a way. Typically, in a metroidvania, you would get fun abilities that help you move faster or fight in a unique way, but there's none of that here. I think, at the moment, the game is a blank canvas; it's sort of boring, but you can really make something great out of it with some unique ideas and elbow grease.
I’m not sure what people want out of an indie metroidvania, but I thought this was great! It’s more of a demo than a full game, but either my expectations were unusually low because of the other reviews, or maybe I wasn’t expecting much because I had to set up the controller (Devs need to realize that certain game genres must have controller support even if it’s just partial in-game!), but besides being too short, everything about it is great! -the music is probably the best thing going on here, it’s perfect all around! -the graphics are better than most when compared to other metroidvania games in the same league (environmental station alpha, outbuddies DX, etc.) I especially like that the dev took time to add detail to the rooms, and it’s not just square rooms with gray wall after gray wall (steam really needs some type of quality control, but who am I kidding? We live in a time where greed is seen as a good thing, forget that I even mentioned such a ridiculous idea!) -gameplay is good, maybe it could use some more enemies, but what’s there works, and it’s not the usual stand still zombie that does nothing except exist to be your target… again, I don’t understand, did the other reviewers want super Metroid for free? (Actually, this has nothing to do with being free, surprisingly a lot of great games are free) Stop reading my incoherent ramblings, go play this fun game!
Управление не очень, но игра норм.
"Xenosis" is a student project from USC Games. One of the first things students should be taught in game development is that 3D graphics became mainstream in the mid 1990's with dedicated 3D cards like the Voodoo3 and the ATI Rage. But the students were deliberately mistaught that's it's okay to release obsolete 2D games in the 3D era of gaming... certainly any professional developer seeing a prospective new hire who doesn't even know about 3D gaming probably isn't going to give them a job. The remarkable part about this garbage Metroidvania ripoff is that the faculty at USC Games, I am not making this up, sat down a bunch of students in 2023, the year that right after Baldur's Gate 3 and Alan Wake 2 came out, and told them what game development business want in hiring game developers is game developers who can only make pixelcrap ripoffs of Metroid. I cannot imagine how hard the recruiters laughed at the students when they honestly presented this garbage during an interview. Needless to say if an educational institution taught me incorrectly on purpose, I'd ask for my money back. We also have to question what value there is for gamers on Steam when institutions flood the store with low quality 2D video game homework assignments... sure, it might make the students feel good about themselves, but this has no benefit for gamers who have to wade through this stuff to find professionally made 3D games. Now on to pricing and value for gamers. It would be unethical for students to try charge money for their homework assignments, so you don't have to pay any money for this. But you'd still have to spend your time downloading this, and "time is money", as they say. There's the other problem, too... as a student project, this wasn't made for gamers. There's no requirement for them to polish and balance the game properly, all they need is something to show the faculty so they can get their grade and move on. Let's once more ask... why is that good for gamers? It's obviously not delivering a solid product. Yet here it is, on the store page, and here you are, reading my review for a student demo that's going to waste your time. While genuine amateur developers who made real products get ignored because they have to compete with this stuff. In some ways, this deluge of student projects on Steam is harmful to everyone. In terms of public reception, this failed. There's over 130 million unique gamers visiting Steam every month. SteamDB showed the game peaked at only 6 concurrent players... this is a dismal public reception. This was so bad they couldn't even give it away. Given that this free student project won't count toward your game collection or add any achievements, and because it's not really a full game and more of a homework assignment, it's not a worthwhile download.
