Note: Dead PvP game This game contains no meaningful single player content. There are no available servers and no player population. This game cannot be played as intended.
This is a barebones game development attempt, a basic tech demo tier minigame with primitive game assets and gameplay that kind of works like a hybrid of soccer and basketball. Although that's a "if you cut a tree down in a forest" question... because there's nobody around to play this. So, XBall is a dead PvP game. Why did it fail? It's video game autopsy time! Almost every PvP exclusive game on Steam fails. Only a tiny proportion of them "go viral". This game failed for many of the same reasons those others fail. The chief of which is the developer thinking that their game will "go viral" without actually creating any reason for it do so. Competition amongst PvP centric games is extreme, and there's only a finite player base to appeal to. This game failed to reach any kind of critical mass and died as a result. Let's go into some of the reasons this particular game failed to appeal to gamers, despite the zero up front cost. First and foremost, there's no meaningful single player content. The developer gambled that other players would be an acceptable substitute for adding storytelling, level design etc to the . They lost that bet. Without a huge community of players or single player content to add a lasting value to the game, the game dies. Developers must learn that other players are not an acceptable substitute for adding content to a game. The graphics aren't great, extremely primitive assets with a (possibly flipped) basic background scene. That's understandably a turn off for a lot of gamers, and it's a big contributor to the failure of the game to attract gamers despite having no up-front cost. Gaming is a primarily visual medium, and if developers want to succeed, they must understand that it's not an area for compromise. You deserve better than compromises. On the matter of pricing and value for gamers, most "free" games on Steam aren't really free. There's often nasty mobile app cash shops, or content locked behind DLC, or donations being requested, or any other number of shady pricing schemes that could mislead gamers, but in this case I'm glad to say this really does appear to be a fully free game. Nothing demonstrates a developers belief in themselves and their work than giving it away without any remuneration. This is a service to themselves, and the gaming industry, and should be applauded. Of course, just because something is free, doesn't necessarily mean it's valuable, or something you might want to spend your time on. Despite having no up-front cost, this failed to appeal to the 120 million+ gamers on Steam. SteamDB showed the game peaked at only 8 concurrent players... this is a dismal public reception. This was so bad they couldn't even give it away. Bearing in mind that free games don't add +1 to your game collector count, should you bother adding this to your library and downloading it? Not this time. This isn't worth downloading. While this won't cost you any money, you get what you pay for, and sometimes, even when the game is free, it's still not enough.

XBall is a textbook example of a tragic "multiplayer ghost town" on Steam—a project with a genuinely unique mechanical concept that is completely unplayable because the player base simply does not exist. On paper, it sells a neat premise: a gritty, strategic PvP sports hybrid where you simultaneously control an entire team of athletic drones, blending elements of hockey, basketball, and football in real-time.Spending exactly 30 minutes inside the client is enough to see how the game functions. The baseline movement, passing grids, and defensive block controls actually feel quite decent when you are running through the introductory tutorial mode. However, because this is an entirely multiplayer-centric title with zero progressive single-player campaigns, it runs into an immediate wall. The active global servers are completely barren; you can sit in a matchmaking queue for 15 minutes without finding a single soul, forcing you to just play boring practice rounds against predictable AI bots. While it respects your Steam profile by omitting useless tracking achievements, there is no reason to keep a dead PvP arena installed. Skip it.
