Features
*Some features discussed here have been added in post-launch patches to the game (2018-2020).
White Pearl is an ambitious deep RPG, best described as being designed similar to the earlier Final Fantasy titles, with a strategic turn-based combat system to explore, several character stories and a focused main plot-line which all connects together by the end of the game.
Set in the huge world of Ottrea and tasked with preventing the fifth time of calamity that will destroy the world and rebirth it entirely, you will explore several varied regions in both the Overworld and Underworld of Ottrea - with polished, 2D pixel-art map graphics created by veterans of the RPGMaker community.
Can you challenge your fate? Or will you find another way to overcome it?
A long, epic tale is waiting to be experienced in White Pearl.
White Pearl features:
- 25-35 hours of playtime
- Hours of additional content
- A story which deeply explores the characters, and also the world around them.
-> The story focuses on multiple perspectives of the characters which all eventually join up.
- A crafting system (infusing materials with elements, creating gear based from this, and reinforcing existing gear)
*You can bypass the menus by participating in optional battle content
- Turn based battle system with interesting abilities and effects, cooldowns, and cast times.
- Interesting gameplay
- An alternate ending in addition to the main ending
The game's story revolves around destroying a cycle of cataclysmic events of the world, known as Dark Eras, which change/rebirth the world after each Era.
White Pearl follows the story of Pearlto and the unlikely allies he meets up with. With a preordained meeting - Pearlto has become tasked with preventing the forthcoming of the Fifth Dark Era.
This, coupled with the looming threat of the Priori (who are the antagonists of the game), means Pearlto is under immense stress in order to keep peace within Ottrea - unless calamity happens a fifth time.
Even so, the origins of the world still lie in mystery, but a certain someone is there to discover it all.
Each character has their own backstories and connections, but what will you discover during your journey in Ottrea?

Pearlto Divinia: A man of a religious folllowing, childhood friend of Katkin's and person of authority and empathy. Even when faced with a dark threat he is tasked to destroy, he feels regret. Should he question his faith?
Katkin Elderflower: A friend which Pearlto needed. Born and raised in a restrictive and nobled family just like Pearlto, the two became friends quickly. However, she conceals her family's purpose and origin to the party. Will she tell them, or will her past continue to haunt her. She will have to learn to deal with the past.
Elrise Valenheart = Brother to Elsay, his outward appearance appears to be morbid and cold, however a traumatic experience has formed him into what he is. He harbours a dark secret unknowingly.
Cassopeia = A woman skilled in the arts of dark magic, she has lost any recollection of her childhood, but then she quickly learns of her identity and connection to a figure long forgotten.
Kurone = Residing in the yet-uncharted lands of the Underworld, this young woman spends most of her days chronicling events that transpire in the world. A childhood friend of Elrise, the two kept in touch until they went their separate ways. It just so happens that fate will eventually bring them together. She is also the woman who knows Cassopeia's past...
Many more to meet...

A large brunt of the gameplay in White Pearl is careful decision-making in and outside of combat. What equipment do you think is most optimal for each character based on their strengths and weaknesses?
When in combat, the player will decide what action each character would take. When all actions have been decided, the turn will begin - along with the enemy's.
Some skills have a charge time, meaning that the character who is charging the skill cannot take any actions while they are charging the skill during their turn, and must wait for it to finish to execute the skill.
Furthermore, some skills have a cooldown - meaning they will have to be used strategically.

Players may interact with objects in the field, outside of combat.
Most of the time, interaction with these objects is crucial to progression within the game - such as solving a puzzle.
Also, there are lore books around the world of Ottrea which can be found and read by the player. These lore books detail more about the mythology and history of Ottrea - but aren't necessary to read as the main story will cover more than enough.

Besides from the main quest, there are also numerous sidequests you can complete - and areas to unlock and find. Doing this additional content will reap great rewards!
There is also crafting within the game, which is unlocked once the first chapter is complete. You can make entirely new gear, or reinforce gear which you already own. You do all this by using materials, with certain ones being dropped by enemies and materials such as leather or cloth available at shops.

Combat Log
View the situation of combat at any time by looking at what has occurred during battle.
However, active debuffs and buffs, as well as health and MP, are always displayed on the combat UI without the need to access the battle log.
Use this feature to see what exactly has occured in order to fine-tune your strategy.
No Unexpected Points of No Return
Because White Pearl is a very story-focused game, there are many points where the open world will be stripped away from you for a time, or certain areas might not be accessed later on. Thankfully, the game will notify you when this is about to happen and you can choose to proceed through the story. You can also view the recommended level you should be at that point.
Linear and Unique Progression
All main characters gain a unique skillset gradually by levelling up, but some skills are shared. Stat progression is advanced in a linear and set path - for example, a character's MP may only increase by a small amount by each level. The frequency of each stat can be checked on "Character Overviews", an in-game item.
In addition, sometimes characters gain new skills as the story develops and their character progresses, too.

My Playtime: 19.1h (100% achievement, finished the game) Grindy Achievement(s): No. Optional Achievement(s): Yes (4 achievements). Difficult Achievement(s): No.
Intro
White Pearl is a turn-based RPG Maker game with a story that is told from several points of view. You'll be in control of 2-11+ party members that will come and go as you play, sometimes divided up to 3 parties with their stories to tell. Pros: - 11+ party members with different playstyles - Despite the numerous party members, you'll get a chance to try them all from the party splits - Points of no return are specified in the game Cons: - Most characters don't have MP regen early game - High random encounter rate in the end-game areas Specs Intel Core i5-9300H 2.40GHz, 8GB RAM, NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1650
Should you play this game?
Yes. If you like generic RPG Maker games, play this game.

In-Depth Review

Visuals
The game mostly uses default RTP assets, with some customized face sets for the characters. I'm not sure if the game uses a stock map or if the prequel, Fabrication (my review), reuses some maps from this game, but I recognize some towns from other places with slight modifications. I assumed it was stock maps because other towns look amateurish to me; buildings are made too huge and pathways are haphazardly placed in the area - the quality is far too different. Building interiors look empty and inconsistent with how it looks on the outside; there is one building that was shown to have one exit inside despite showing two doors outside. The dungeons look better, though. Some of them might be shown as huge square-shaped buildings with walls to divide the area, but the outdoor maps look more unique, separating themselves into several areas to make it short while making them look more like an actual location.
Story
The story might be hard to remember because of the party splits, but the game does a good job of summarizing everything in the quest log. I like how it was made in a way that is not too obvious as to where the end boss will be. Despite the numerous characters, each character plays a certain role in the story, and the party split makes them stand out more. Dialogues also flow well with some humor from time to time to liven up the situation. If I had to comment, I only wish that the game uses a filter whenever there is a flashback since it's hard to tell otherwise.
The Game
Gameplay White Pearl is played in a traditional turn-based RPG with some exploration from time to time. However, going from place to place can be tricky due to how the overworld is designed. You get a boat early on in the game, and the overworld is vast. You might be blocked from accessing areas that are meant for later progression, but it still takes time to figure out where you have to go next, especially since the game rarely tells you which direction to go. I wish there would be a direction marker in the overworld to show where the main quest area is; there is actually a map that you can consult in the inventory, but I didn't realize its existence until later in the game. Crafting is discouraged. It's hard to collect all of the materials since you need to buy them in other towns, and not every town sells the material that you are looking for. Moreover, items that you get from crafting are mostly sold in other shops, and you don't have to worry about saving up money - gear upgrades mostly come from dungeons anyway, so you will have a lot of money saved up. The other gear upgrade features are also rather limited since it only accepts predetermined items. Combat Combat is a combination of both touch and random encounters, with 4 party members taking place in each fight. This makes the party split to be more appreciated since you can try out all party members in different combinations. Once you get to try them all, the game will reunite the whole party, allowing you to pick the party members that you like for the important fights. Leveling up is also made easy. Inactive members might gain less EXP than active ones, but there is an accessory that can increase EXP gain and enemies are everywhere. All of my party members are max leveled before I reached the final fight. One character feels weaker compared to others, though. There are two sections where this party member has to explore a dungeon with another character, and it's hard to keep her alive throughout the dungeon because she was only useful for her status ailments. The other character that travels with her only has enough skill to keep themselves alive, and this character has a weak HP restorative skill and no MP restorative skill despite being an MP-based character. I even had to use some potions or run away from fights whenever this character has to explore a dungeon with one more person. Most MP-based characters don't have MP restorative spells early game. Although they have high MP, it can be hard to gauge whether you will have enough MP until the next healing spot, and there might be bosses that you have to fight on the way, making these characters to be useless. Luckily, there are always other characters that you can use to replace them, and healing spots are easy to reach if you know where to look. Length and Difficulty I finished the game in 19.1h. The game has an alternative ending with an extra dungeon in one of the chapters, although you don't need to restart the game from the beginning to experience it - you just need to have a save before the branch splits. The game isn't difficult apart from some areas where you have to explore a dungeon with two party members. It can be hard to stay alive with limited healing and MP. One thing to note is that the grinding is made minimal. I only had to grind to beat the alternative ending because I had to play as one character that I mentioned before, and leveling up is easy in the end-game areas with EXP-boosting items. Issues There are some delays when I browsed the inventory, especially the quest journal. It also takes time to access the quest journal from the inventory - I wish you can access it from the main menu instead. Also, charging skills seem to be useless since the damage output is roughly the same as non-charging skills. Lastly, the encounter rate in the last few dungeons seems to be too high. There was an occasion when I had to do another battle after walking 2 steps.
Conclusion
White Pearl is really an ambitious RPG Maker project. I am surprised that it manages to hold so well with so many characters. Most of them are balanced both story and gameplay-wise, making them look equal. The party split also helps to connect the story from different points of view while helping you try all characters that the game has. Nothing (except the crafting system) feels wasted in the game. If you like playing RPG Maker games, try playing this one.

This game is actually really good, despite me being only a few hours into it! I still don't get how everything works but I'm learning as I progress. It reminds me of Final Fantasy, which I love! If you're looking for a top down, exploration, turn-based game, with a solid story, this is it for you. That's what I've determined so far at least. Have fun & remember to heal Pearl in the beginning cause he dies so fast ;-; (or I am just bad)
Update: I played a bit of Patch 2.0 and honestly this game is way better, even if it was good before, it is now GREAT. The equipment is now extremly varied - with the plethora of new items, armors and new crafting options added, the game finally has the depth it was trying to achieve in the first place. Even the combat is way better with the new skills added (Elyswer is beast). Also constantly being supported by developer for bug fixes - the response time is still within 2 hours or so, that's just incredible. There is no other way to support the game than play it and review it so JUST DO IT!!! Really good game, I played it on itch and I can say without a doubt the Steam version is the definitive edition of the game. Pros and cons: - Interesting story (there's a whole other story in White Pearl that I can't wait to see!) The story seems really by-the-books, but later on it gets really deep and emotional - I was very surprised. Also implies there's more to the plot than you think. Keep playing, it gets better - Good characters, I espically liked Pearlto towards the end of the game, but Cass remains my favourite. Nice humour, NEVER too serious unless towards end of game - Great choice of skills and mechanics, it was so fun, I thought it would be boring to play a turn-based game in this day and age - but, with variety, it all changes - Great sound. The music is really good and it fits the game perfectly. The creator was very respectful to content that is not his (like the music). the music itself is extremley varied and I'm impressed with the production value, if this game was fully commercial with original music like in the style heard in the game, I imagine Harry would be rich right now - but still, with what the game is, I am glad he made it. - Brilliant developer support Cons: - Poor pacing, sometimes the story can just halt suddenly and you'll be left wondering "what the hell am I suspossed to do next?" although, thankfully, the large world makes up for this at times - Perspective changes, happen far too often. Thankfully you can change willingly at Chapter 10 of the game, but I wish it was implemented throughout the whole game - No sort option, although it's nice to have so much content in this game - it's hard to find it So yeah, this game was really good. Get it, it's free! I can't wait for the prequel
I really enjoy this game, because it give you adventure and a great story. For me I like games like this that makes me wanna grind so I can see what kind of skills each and every character gets. The downside tho is that theres no way to see what quest your on or see where your next destination is. I think they should add a QuestBook to keep track of such things. I guess thats the only downside I see in the game... other than that I would really recommend this game. I really hope that the developer replies to my review so that he know he did a good job on the game!! *After a later date I find myself coming back to this game over and over again since the prequel is coming soon. Even though I can never finish it (For good reasons) I would still recommend this game to people.

I liked this game. The 2 stepping as I call it (enemy encounter every 2 steps taken) was a lil annoying in some areas but it's not too bad. As another person posted, the switching between characters with no warning is a bit off putting but I did enjoy the variety of perspectives. A little warning would've been nice tho, especially since we have to share all our items with them. Overall, nice story... a fun chill pay
