I'm honestly not sure whether to recommend this game or not. I enjoyed cracking the codes. They require some thinking outside of the typical puzzle RPG box. However, some of them have obscure enough elements that a lot of people probably wouldn't even think of or know about. I enjoyed uncovering the story. The pieces reveal themselves at a good pace and you can start to see how they might fit together. However, the game promises an explanation at the climax but never actually delivers one. I actually couldn't believe it when the credits rolled. It was just so unexpected. For this reason alone, I chose to not recommend this game. Overall, the game has a very unpolished feel. - There are several bugs that allow you to re-access previously cleared areas. Doing so often breaks the game. - Spelling and grammar errors are prolific. - There's not a lot of life in the dialogue and text. Interacting with the world and NPCs (outside of cracking the codes) often feels pointless. - Map design is terrible. Entrances and exits aren't always obvious. Pretty much all the maps are needlessly large, repetitive and tedious to traverse (especially given that exploring is almost completely unnecessary). While this actually fits somewhat with the tone of the story (reflecting the character's confusion and dysphoria), it doesn't feel like this was done intentionally. - Buying gear and items is available to you, but is completely unnecessary. They don't get used and there are no battles. If you like cracking codes, then sure give it a try. If you're after a more typical RPG, this game definitely isn't for you.

RPG Maker strikes again! "Whirlpool" is one of hundreds of low effort retro-pixel RPG Maker asset/construction kit flips spamming the Steam catalog, made with the RPG Maker video game construction kit... in their own words, "Our easy to use tools are simple enough for a child." Like all RPG Maker "games", this is essentially a bunch of low quality/canned assets from RPG Maker coupled with a cringeworthy high school anime club fan fiction. Notably, the "developer" couldn't work out how to use RPG Maker to make a JRPG (the only thing it can do, and it's terrible at it). Instead, we have a crappy e-book/adventure game hybrid... there's some really, really badly done puzzles, but mostly this is just incredibly cringe high school anime club dropout fan-fiction writing riddled with errors and spelling mistakes (it's not that hard to use a spell checker before burning $100 on Steam Direct to publish garbage nobody wants, is it? I guess it is!) . As with all RPG Maker games, the poor quality engine displays badly in fullscreen and doesn't have full HD support or any graphics tweaking options, making this unacceptable for any dedicated modern PC gamer. The point can be made that the intention of RPG Maker is to make demos and small games to pass around friends, and shouldn't be used for "professional" game development. Like most RPG Maker shovelware and asset flips, the game features extremely low quality copy + pasted 2D retro pixel art, looks awful, and has even worse gameplay. RPG Maker is an absolutely terrible construction kit, and never results in games of any reasonable quality or value to gamers. So, it's hard to describe this as a game, the focus of the product is more like that of an e-book/visual novel, there's only minor, shallow and uninteresting gameplay elements. The crux of this is to push some very low quality, badly done fan-fiction tier writing, where we see once more a developer fail to understand the importance of "Show, don't tell", and for whatever reason, weren't able to convey their narrative through gameplay, giving us endless lines of badly written e-book text instead. My gaming rig is not a kindle. This game is fairly dated at 8 years old... and even back then it looked old and busted compared to contemporary, professionally made 3D games of the same period. It looked bad then, it looks worse now. Now on to pricing and value for gamers. This is "free" enough (not every "free" game in the "free" section is truly free, there's usually some hidden price tag), at least you won't be expected to spend any more money after you download this, but just because something is free doesn't mean it's good, and the cost of a game is more than just financial, your time is valuable too. In terms of public reception, this failed. There's over 130 million unique gamers visiting Steam every month. SteamDB showed the game peaked at [b]only 3 concurrent players[/b]... this is a dismal public reception. This was so bad they couldn't even give it away. Bearing in mind that free games don't add +1 to your game collector count, should you bother adding this to your library and downloading it? Definitely not. This isn't worth it. I'm paraphrasing another reviewer here, but this should be a paid product... they'd have to pay people to download it.
