Amazing game 10/10
What Happened Here? is a short horror adventure that I found surprisingly charming despite how small it is. I play as Elly, a young woman who comes home from work and discovers that her house has completely changed and her roommates are nowhere to be found. From there, I have to explore the house, solve puzzles and figure out what happened. It uses a classic horror setup, but the cute pixel art and limited colour palette give the whole thing a very different feeling from a typical horror game. The exploration is simple, but I liked how the game makes me pay attention to my surroundings. I move around the house, interact with objects and look for clues that can help me understand what is going on. There are several puzzles built into the story, and they are generally more about paying attention and figuring out what the game is showing me than dealing with complicated mechanics. I enjoyed that because it keeps the focus on the mystery rather than turning the game into a frustrating puzzle challenge. The characters are another part that I liked. Elly is not simply walking around an empty haunted house, because the mystery involves her roommates and the strange things that have happened inside the mansion. The dialogue helps slowly reveal more about the characters and their relationships, while the choices I make can affect where the story goes. I think this works especially well for a short game because it gives me a reason to replay it and see what I might have missed. The atmosphere is probably my favourite part. The limited two bit style looks very simple, but it gives the game a distinctive old school appearance that fits the RPG Maker structure really well. The soundtrack also does a lot to create the mysterious mood. I liked the contrast between the cute visuals and the darker things happening in the story, because it makes some of the unsettling moments feel more unexpected. There are also secrets hidden around the house, which gives me another reason to explore instead of rushing straight toward the ending. My biggest issue is obviously the length. What Happened Here? is designed to be completed in a fairly short session, and I reached the end before I felt completely ready to leave the house. The mystery is interesting enough that I wanted more time with the characters and more opportunities to explore the setting. The multiple endings help with replay value, but I still think a longer story could have made the central mystery feel more developed. There are also a few rough edges that remind me this is a small independent project. Some puzzles can be a little unclear and the overall structure is quite linear, even though the choices can lead to different endings. The game also had some bugs around release that were fixed through updates, so it is clear that this was a very small production. Still, I think the roughness is easier to overlook because the game has a clear identity and does not try to pretend it is something much bigger than it is. Overall, I think What Happened Here? is a cute and creepy little adventure that makes good use of its short length. I enjoyed exploring the strange house, figuring out the puzzles and slowly uncovering the mystery surrounding Elly and her roommates. The pixel art and soundtrack give it plenty of personality, while the different endings make the experience worth revisiting. I definitely wanted more by the time it finished, but for a short free horror game, I think it is a really enjoyable little experience. Rating: 6.8/10
Juego sencillo y bonito
There is not substantial Girls Love content in this game, so keep that in mind before trying. 30 min of gameplay?! As if. There are a bunch of endings and special things to do so you can get some of the achievements. Quite entertaining. The secret bad ending isn't obtainable yet, though. So, while not really gay, it's a short and lovely RPG; I recommend it!
Story is alright. Puzzles are straightforward, Really did no like the colour palette.
