Right. So. I played only for a while, but there are things I have to say right now, while my first impressions are still fresh. 1. The presentation is top-notch. There are some issues with environment fading in and out, and camera work could use some love sometimes, but the art style, oooh, it's wonderful. The music, the voices, the sound effects, it's all so perfectly blend together into a haze of lead and violence. 2. The gameplay makes Bastion come to mind. You've got two weapon slots, one for each main mouse button, two slots for abilities, and a slot for a healing item. You can roll, dash, and take cover - and you absolutely should, unless you enjoy swiss cheese. 3. Another game it brings memories of about is Binding of Isaac. The gameplay loop is quite similar: burst into a room, murder baddies, get stuff. Occasionally you bump into a special room with a shop, a sidequest, a chest o'goodies or a level-up shrine within it. Solid formula, already proven to work for many, many hours. I can get behind that. 4. Despite being procedurally generated, there is a story of some description. Apparently you're a not-so-dead gunslinger trying to make sense of the situation you're in (basically, you've died but you're still here - why?). Some background revealed when talking to several friendly NPCs mostly found in hub areas between dungeon floors. It's all alluring in its own way. 5. You've got your regular roguelite buffet here: permadeath, but also permanent unlockables, random loot, random floor layout and so on. The items you find are varied enough to warrant some novelty. 6. There's a lighting system here which is very vital to gameplay. You have autoaim, but only on enemies that are unobscured by darkness. You can light lamps by interacting with them, but oftentimes this has you right in the line of fire. Sometimes the risk is worth taking, because enemies get stunned for a while when you light up the torch and the aiming without the autoaim is really hard, and yet, sometimes it just isn't. You have to decide for yourself and better decide quick - hiding behind cover does help, but only for a while, because most obstacles you can hide behind are destructible... and very, very fragile. Long story short, a cool roguelite weird western action game you should absolutely give a try if you enjoyed Bastion, Binding of Isaac and maybe a little Hotline Miami. I myself would very much like to see it finished. For something you can currently play for free it's a very high quality product and whale of a time if you happen to dig roguelites as much as I do. Bonus points if you knew and loved Deadlands: the Weird West. Solid recommendation.

This game has interesting mechanics, amazing soundtrack and offers a challenge for the player. Pretty funny too. Has great potential in the future. Looking forward for the complete game.
I love the art style or the game, but everything else unfortunately lets it down, the combat feels slow and monotonous, with most small enemies being easy to dispatch. The weapons have a good amount of punch, both visually and in terms of the audio but it's still not very satisfying to do the same two shot every enemy routine for everything from dogs to bomb throwers to normal guys with guns and I never really felt threatened and manged to beat past the first boss only getting hit twice, both from enemies I couldn't see. Speaking off the light mechanic needs some work, It's just not fun to not be able to see anything for half the room, with the only way to light up the area to take a leap of faith that you wont be blocked by anything or shot up, easier to just shoot away into the dark as most enemies don't seem to see you until you are right up into their face. The boss was... okay... it really needs to telegraph its move better but even so was really easy to shoot to death, additionally the movement speed is just *way* too slow out of combat making backtracking an absolute chore, and the noises for movement grate pretty quickly, especially in the snow area. The progression elements *borrowed* from dead cells honestly work pretty well, even if the sin pickup sound effect is a little loud, But the melee attack I really cant seem to get off properly, maybe I'm just doing wrong. All in all, It looks fantastic (for the most part), sounds okay to painful and plays really stiffly, and yet honestly I really want to see where it goes, with enough work this could be an amazing game and it's clear there is a vision behind it, but unfortunately I cannot recommend it at all in it's current state
I can't wait for the full version to come out, incredibly fun and smooth mechanics. One thing I would change is allowing players to move or walk around at least during the longer talking scenes, or at least add a skippable dialogue button, other than that, game is great and I'm excited.
The game's slick presentation, brilliant style, interesting lore and beautiful music & graphics are hampered only by pretty severe control and reliability issues, and an inconsistent and undewhelming difficulty. I have no doubts that all this can be resolved and that the game's full release will be great, but I feel obligated to mark this review as "negative" to highlight these important issues that I think the devs should address. While there's other small flaws and issues, like balance needing a pass and backtracking being painfully slow even when spamming roll, there's one thing I want to address in detail. The controls. Now, at its current state, the game is barely even playable without a controller, which is bad, but from what the game says, the full release should have proper KB + M controls that are up to a reasonable standard. The issue is, when playing with a controller there seems to be pretty common, albeit very inconsistent and hard to reproduce artificially, instances of commands and inputs getting severely delayed, weirdly interrupted or being wildly innacurate. The strange "forced auto-aim" system, which I'll consider a part of the controls, is also quite prone to having issues, where it'll struggle to switch to different targets when manually prompted to, randomly switch to new targets on its own, or even faill to "lock" onto any targets. It can also sometimes be oddly innacurate (could be worse with certain weapons, I noticed it most when using the rifle with a 'bleed' effect), which makes you wish you could disable it altogether, even though aiming with the controller is less than ideal. The difficulty, which is another main issue I mentioned, seems like it's being actively worked on, so while it is a problem in the context of this beta, I'm more willing to give it a pass until launch. My main piece of advice on this front is to make difficulty customizable; difficulty levels, at the very least, and if possible, modifiers and granular control over damage & health multipliers, cooldowns, skill values, economy, loot chances, quality, etc. The combat currently feels repetitive and uninteresting, but I believe it's due to this, rather than the underlying design. Oh, and one final little thing. Skipping through dialogue is painfully slow, and requires constantly mashing the B button. Perhaps have the player hold it to automatically skip through, and have less delays between the previous line clearing, the new one appearing, etc.?
Review: Ghost Rider of the West Liked: Art style and random map generation. Disliked: Only 1 voice actor, Ron Perlman. Graphics: Dark fluid tone utilized well. Oh yeah, this is real good. Rouge-lite Bastion that completely cribs the upgrade and weapon drop systems from Dead Cells (a very good thing, IMO). Fantastic art style, and it''s always good when Ron Perlman is in it. I know has a planned release coming soon, but I think as is they should maybe consider releasing into Early Access. I ran into a couple of bugs in my playthrough. Nothing game-breaking, just some cover being invisible until I was right on it, and the boss completely not making any sounds. I also think the other characters you run into could use some kind of voice acting or even some other kind of sound to give it an otherworldly feeling. If the price is good, I'll definitely be picking this up right away.
Damn... I wish this beta had a bit more progression to see what it really gets like in the future, but must admit, other than a few finicky controls on the Mouse and Keyboard.. Such as Enter for continue chatboxes... and Home/End to go through the menu's, I must admit that this game was really fun, it keeps you involved and makes sure that you are moving around as the enemies destroy your cover around you and make you think on your feet as you see a dog come around on your flank but also a bomb beside you that is about to explode, do you roll out the way... push out and fight it... turn on the light to stun the enemies? You choose, but all in all, for a beta... really fun and cant wait for the full release
This game is a good, solid experience. Beautiful visuals, engaging gameplay, and an amazing atmosphere... but from the level of polish, it feels like it should be in an early-access alpha instead of an open beta. Bugs abound, both graphical and gameplay-related, and the content is stretched thin after a few runs. My recommendation to the developers (if they even care to look at a random review on the Internet) would be to polish this up, add some more items, room templates, enemies, et cetera, and then release it to the public. Then why do I recommend it? Easy: it's free, and it's clearly still in development. If you're looking for a time sink, this game is a pretty good one.
