Please follow our curator page, Otome Lovers, if you'd like to see more reviews like this one!
Fancy a quickie and a cheap thrill courtesy of the wannabe-evil-incarnate-but-actually-hopelessly-incompetent-and-acutely-naive Grendel Jinx? The quickie is the very nature of this fleetingly short bolt-on addition to the Chichester series and, dependent upon your choices within the game, you might just get a little buzz out of it too. This is the fourth game in the series that I have looked at, and there has clearly been a number of improvements made to them during this time. Most notable is the addition of sprites for the protagonist, placed in the familiar VN position to the left of the dialogue box. These are quite good, and more full-body than we would usually expect to see in most examples of the genre. Also in keeping with the series, the audio is at the top end of the positives found here, closely followed by the title sequence, which reminds me of a TV spy film or series that I cannot quite put my finger on. Whatever, it works. As for the story this time around – quite simply, there isn't one. We get a lead-in to a single, rather strange, event; and then the game ends. If you have not played any of the WTC series prior to this, I strongly advise that you do not begin your experience here, despite it being available free. You will be confused, not understand who the characters are or what on earth is going on; and will very likely be put off considering any of the other connected games. If however, you are already a fan of the series, then there is no harm in taking a look as there is no cost attached. As mentioned at the beginning of this review, there is a chance that you will get a bit of amusement at the main event, depending upon which choices you make. It seems to me that the author is making a concerted effort to bring a modern-day, extreme Carry On... feel to these games; and is having enough success with that aim to at least make the comparison a valid one. There are a few negatives to be found here which I feel could have been easily avoided with more time taken over checking prior to release. For the length of the game, there are far too many text errors. If you skim read, it probably won't bother you too much. It irked seven bells out of me. The character Cindi has wildly abnormal boobs. What on earth was going on when she was drawn? I dread to think. And then there are the “plot” holes. Why would a hotel receptionist be involved in assisting the shenanigans of a miscreant in causing discomfort to another guest? And.. not forgetting the achievements, which may be broken. I had a whole heap of them drop upon starting the game. This might be because I had also played OVN 1 “The Beach”, or it might just be a bug. All in all there is simply not enough here to provide any satisfaction, and the overall structure of the piece feels “loose”. You'll understand that if you play it. For these reasons I cannot give this game a recommendation, although confirmed fans will probably find what is there will be enough, barely, to justify the hour that they will spend running through it.

This OVN is a brief side-story to an ongoing series where character relationships, story development & direction have been created which can make the whole experience like walking into a movie/series halfway through so I'd recommend WTC 1 and, as this OVN fits between WTC 2 parts 1 & 2, playing those first prior to this OVN otherwise the epilogue will reveal spoilers This free to play second OVN continues the madcap Austin Powers style humour of the Welcome to Chichester series with its sexual innuendo jokes revolved around the rivalry of the Protagonist (You) and Grendel Jinx. In this scenario, the Protagonist has prepared against Grendel's daily torments to ensure their own plan can be carried out as part of an unexpected surprise [strike]retaliation[/strike] for Grendel. For the Protagonist there is also the dilemma of whether to take a blue pill (as advised in a pre-recording) but the consequences can be more worrying than the comedown! The purpose behind this OVN was the testing of new character sprites and artwork and, having experienced all the series, I have to say the use of the sprites is a great addition alongside the text-boxes even if they are generic in style for the Protagonist but that's just me being pedantic! The music, as always, is exceptionally catchy and I thoroughly enjoyed the title-song by Snowflake called Living Nightmare but found the music/effects used during the 'torture' scenes cringey. The OVN has a challenging super secret achievement that would be impossible to discover without the use of a Steam Guide (that makes use of a program to access Ren'Py files directly to discover the unlockables!) but the remainder of the achievements are much easier to uncover. The 'hidden' Epilogue has a big impact on the plot of this OVN and does reveal details of the relationship between Grendel & Protagonist player though at the same time it exposes spoilers that occur in WTC 2. The playtime can be anywhere between 45 minutes to 1 hour depending on if you want to fully complete everything or if you're too 'spent' from the experience of the first playthrough! Either way, it does have added replay factor to it for unlocking the achievements and discovering the full story revelation. If you've had an enjoyable experience with this series before then chances are you will have a fun time with this short addition but if you're new to this be sure to experience earlier VNs to fully understand and appreciate it. ~~~ Liked what you see? super nice free to play pc game! I realy like it! you can play it!
DISCLAIMER: I have not played any of the previous titles, and this game was requested through the Steam Curator Connect. It's a free visual novel, which makes it hard to say anything negative, since the only thing you're putting in requires your own time. The overall feel of this VN was very similar to the over-the-top reactions and statements provided by a lot of stereotypical anime/JPN VNs with a heavy focus on shenanigans/antics with little to no depth (I was heavily reminded of Danganronpa *shiver*). The artwork is fine, some of the characters looking much cuter than the others (and more detailed). Opening intro/theme song was infinitely more interesting than the story itself. Writing is fine, and I guess the overall game is just fine. The best thing was honestly the music, which I was surprised to find myself grooving to. If you like free VNs and don't care much about, well, anything, play it. (I honestly felt very lost, not sure what was going about half the time, but as I said in the disclaimer, this could be a result of me not playing the previous titles). P.S. I did laugh at some of the innuendos and sex jokes, and I did enjoy the setting. It provides a very home-y and comforting atmosphere, which is why I guess I was so off-put by the outrageous aspect of some of the characters.
One of the shortest VNs to date. Just beware of the achievement bomb at the start and it’s otherwise a good laugh.
PROS:
- You can really tell the developer just wanted to have some fun with this OVN. Well, I had fun too. - The
”Active Resistance”
leaflet was hilarious. - Menu soundtrack is really good. The overall in-game soundtrack is an improvement over the previous game.
NEUTRAL:
- No major improvements have been made to the character and environment design, which is a little bland, but they’re not terrible anyway.
CONS:
- I launch the game for the first time and…12 ACHIVEMENTS!! What the actual…hell. - Please developer, fix this issue or just remove most of the achievements. No one needs 21 achievements in a sub 1-hour game.
FINAL SCORE: 63/100
Thank you for the free game! Some feedback: If your gong to put sexual content in your game, then you should actually illustrate it, not just have it be text. It's a 'visual' novel after all... and if your going to have something as weird as a dude ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ all over the floor from being electrocuted by a psychotic loli, you may as well actually draw some tits or something. By the way, the reason all the characters look so flat is because the artist isn't varying the line width at all. Get a tablet with pressure sensitivity, and actually use the pressure. Practising calligraphy drills can really help: zebra strokes, weighted circles, that sort of thing. Thanks for the freebee, Keep making games. I want you to get better.
