Taking place on the unluckiest day of the year, the protagonist and his/her friends get an invite to "The Beach". Mistaking this for a private beach party, they are sorely disappointed when instead of everyone being able to have fun, they have to instead search for three parts of a missing sword.
Background
Before playing this OVN it is worth knowing that there are 2 released VNs to the WelcomeToChichester series that describe the backstory & characters that feature in The Beach. Some prior knowledge is extremely useful to understanding the history of the characters relationships & rivalries but I will give a brief overview as a starting point. The Male protagonist & Grendel are from rival Spy agencies: The Phoenix Custodians and The Council of the Unseen but, through escapades from earlier in the WTC series, they become allies to tackle two life threatening scenario's: the fate of Cindi and the allies run-ins with the Screaming Vocalists Hebkya & Misericordia who are hired mercenaries. The Violet Hotel is in Chichester, England where the earlier episodes take place and introduces you to the Hotel's Receptionist and Cosplaying Waitress as well as the local Taxi Driver.
The Beach OVN
In this spin-off OVN we once more see the male Protagonist suffering the pranks of Grendel as he, and the female cast, are mysteriously invited to The Beach. This leads to a gathering to meet the curious benefactor who poses the WTC characters a challenge that will test the male protagonist's loyalty as well as his sanity! The plot jumps around like a Politician's manifest going from zany humour to extreme events that mean trying to find any logic to the goings-on will be near impossible to do. There is a reason behind this that you will discover near the finale but the journey to that moment really will test the serious gamer. The music & sound effects are effective for this VN with basic graphics yet features another wonderful Music Intro by Renderforest who have also designed the earlier music videos for this series. There are achievements that feature 2 earned from replaying the multiple choice end area but there is also a sneaky Easter egg achievement that is reminiscent of The Stanley Parable. If you know what I mean by this then you will also know how to unlock it. I also discovered that this OVN features a function that supports the Blind through a talking text aid. More details are on the Menu screen on how to activate this. It's best to see this OVN for what it is: a spoof that doesn't want to be taken seriously rather it aims to give wacky humour combined with bizarre elements to the story so if you don't enjoy this style you will struggle through. I personally have knowledge of the WTC series so I can appreciate & relate to the details in this OVN and would recommend it to others who also have followed this series though if you're new to this it can be daunting to understand and make sense of. ~~~Liked what you see? The best description that I can apply to this short story in relation to the Welcome To Chichester series is that of a spin-off. As such, reader accessibility to the characters within and their machinations will be enhanced by some previous familiarity, and possibly slightly hindered by coming in to this game “cold”. Therefore, I recommend against making this release your first port of call if the series appeals to you. You play the part of spy Ethan Lewis, on holiday – although not at the destination of his original intent due in whole to his one-time nemesis Grendel Jinx. Following updates to the series, you now have gender choice for your character, which will affect several dialogue comments, and the option to use a name of your own for him or her. “The Beach” sees previous sworn enemy Grendel as an ally – of sorts – with her personality morphing into the type of Carry On film character that would have been played by Sid James back in the day. There are other British culture nods to be found too, including a stereotypical (if highly unrealistic) London-cabbie type taxi driver, and a nod to the 60s cult TV series The Prisoner. The story itself appears to go off on a tangent that will make no sense at all until near the end when an explanation will clarify things – unless you pay close attention throughout, as an easily overlooked comment near the beginning provides an indication as to how what follows could be possible. The writing is in the same style as the main series stories: light and fluffy. You will not find a deep and involving story here to get your teeth into. There are very few choices to be made in the game, these will lead to some dialogue variations, notably at the end; technically providing different endings, although in terms of separate branches to recognisably different conclusions I would assert that there is only one ending path available. Achievement hunters should beware that repeat plays selecting the different dialogue choices each time will net you only 12 of the available 16. I am not at all convinced that the remaining 4 can be completed just by playing through the story normally. Ensure that you are OK with this before embarking upon a mission to achieve 100% completion. The strongest parts of this offering are once again the title sequence, which is a nice watch, and the music. There are high quality songs at the beginning and the end of the game, and the music throughout is pleasing. Text quality could still benefit from some work, there are more than enough minor errors to be distracting, although if you are the type to skim-read through then there is a good chance that you will not notice them. There is also an assisted-voice option included, whereby a computerised voice reads out the dialogue and the name of who is speaking. I was pleasantly surprised to discover that this includes voicing the player name that I had typed in; although the voice used is flat and mechanical. With an absence of inflection in the reading – and especially with the story being shallow – I find it difficult to imagine that the use of this feature would really engage the visually impaired. It is a nice idea, but to be a truly worthy addition, significant improvements to its execution would be required. Overall, this novelette is a passable way of spending a couple of hours, especially for the price. Strictly on the basis of it not being your first visit to the WTC series, I would suggest that the positives just outweigh the negatives; although as per my review of part 1; it is quite a close-run decision and is likely to come down to a coin toss based on your personal preferences for story detail, number of player choices, and presentation style. A basic poorly made free VN, though I appreciate being able to identify as Random
Terrible experience.
Another crazy addition to the Welcome To... Chichester saga. I still think this would make a good anime series (I want to see the frying pans and bricks fly!) This short and sweet VN can be understood as a standalone, even though it's part of a larger series. +Pros+ +I love the intro sequences these games have, this intro had a great song and visuals that reminded me of summer fun +The slapstick humor is crazy and silly but still fun +An anime-style adventure +Choose the gender of the protagonists (male or female) +Choices and three different endings +Achievements -Cons- -Though I enjoy this kind of adventure and humor (crazy, slightly violent, kinda typical anime slapstick) I recognize it isn't for everyone -It's short 1 and a half hours can get you all the endings/achievements, etc. however, the price is low so you just need to be aware it's short. Though it may not be for everyone, it also shouldn't be easily overlooked. This VN may be on the short side, but it's got that classic anime style humor with flying bricks and whatnot so there's fun to be had. The ending was a little stereotypical but I liked how the choices changed the ending dialogue. It was a fun hour and a half.
