There's an inherant problem with the game that means that no-one should ever pick up this game; The experienced player exclude and suppress the new players. No matter what you do, or how hard you try, the larger countries formed from only experienced players will ultimately drive you out of the game. Have a resource thay want? Not for long. This game isn't friendly to newcomers, and the majority of players are actively discriminating against new people. I will acknowledge a minority of friendly countries who are helpfull and welcoming to new players, which is why I stayed in the game in the first place, but they aren't powerful enough to prevent you from being crushed under the heel of the try-hards. There's no fun to be had. Look elsewhere. Update: I joined a country filled with decent people and the afore-mentioned country went and declared war with us over a deposit they wanted for their subsidiary country (not even their own,) despite us having had it for weeks prior. They outnumber us 3:1 and are actively suppressing us, trying to poach the experienced players for their subsidiary/slave country while sending threatening mails to all of our members in an attempt to intimidate us into joining. I just lost a city to them. So, not only is the game filled with pricks who aren't willing to accept new players, but they'll go out of their way to chase you out of the game if you aren't willing to join their subsidiary/slave country.

Horrible community, waste of time. If you like waiting 40 hours to upgrade a shack you can enjoy these pixelated half effort graphics. If you thought you could enjoy this game with your friends/family forget it. No purpose of creating an account because they will just automatically assume you are creating multiple accounts. Not possible to play with a friend on the same IP adress. Waste of time, waste of space, waste of 435 mb download. Not much to say, you have an average of 60 players online anyways. Don't bother playing this game.
This is one of those poor browser games where you start an upgrade and then have to wait many hours for it to finish or pay real money to finish it immediately. If you are looking for a browser game which give you the choice of long waiting times or paying real money to skip the waiting times this game fits you. If you are looking for a real game you are wrong here. When you start the game it says: "The Ways of History is a massively multiplayer browser-based-real-time strategy game." I have no idea why they even allow those poor ported browser games on steam. Steam is a platform for good games and not browser game trash. You can play them in browsers as the name already says. Go away of steam and stop polluting it with those trash browser games. Edit: Be aware of the fanboys. Random players started to flame and insult me since I made this review. I think they didn't like that I posted a negative review about their browser game. Too bad because I will tell the truth and you can not censor it fanboys! Go on and flame me this only shows that I was right. It also proves that the community of this game is either hateful or full of immature kids.
There was no new server for the steam launch. We're currently playing on a server that's 2/months old. Typically this wouldn't be too much of a problem but, we're competing for a space victory through resources and technology research that takes up actual real-time. Literally there are players that have a 1,440/Hr head start. We're told that since the server isn't new just play to make player relationships and learn how to play until a new game world opens up....
I've been playing the browser version of this game for a couple years, and have gotten into the Hall of Fame twice. I've also assisted Sid Meier with the two online Civ games so I'm very into this genre. Ways of History is the most advanced Civ-like MMO currently in existence. The devs have solved a number of very sticky design problems related to running a game like this with over 1000 simultaneous players. Games can run long, up to a year. Players are dumped into the center of the map if they join on server day 1 and as time goes on they arrive further from the center where competition is less fierce. The social aspects of the game are amazing, and this (along with excellent economic design) is where the game shines the most. On the business model side, the devs have done an industry-leading good job of making the game competitive and F2P but not P2W. You can boost some of the gameplay aspects by spending, but no more than 30%. Wonder development and troop movements cannot be affected in any way by spending. Build times for most buildings are fairly quick, this is not a game where you get lots of resources but have to pay to speed up construction. You have that option on non-wonder construction, but the need for this is really low. Combat used to be tremendously fun but the game recently went from "instant and abstract" to "real time 3D". This added a lot of complexity that the devs are still trying to sort out, so right now this is the weakest area of the game. Mixing squishy units like slingers (speed 85) and tough units like macemen (speed 50) will cause the slingers to run out in front and get pasted before their meat shields arrive. So being aggressively offensive is going to have a very steep learning curve. This is good news for carebears, of course, and static defenses in this game are quite good at discouraging all but the most determined attackers. The weakest area of the game currently is actually in the Terms of Use. Section 3i of the rules states that "...extremism, terrorism, Nazism, hate or disrespect for any culture, race, nation, language, religion, politics, political regime, ideology, or social movement is prohibited." It's been pointed out to me by the devs that this does not include any sort of protection against sexism or gender shaming so I've seen misogyny run rampant in the WoH community with the okay from the dev team. I think Ways of History is hands down the world's best, and fairest, massively multiplayer strategy game. It is my hope that an influx of Western players will make it even better. Be warned that it's not an easy game, even though it starts you off gently. Ask questions, make friends, and don't ever underestimate the Russian players who in some cases have been playing 5+ years and know you haven't.
Very slow empire building game that is quite enjoyable. Do not go by the bad reviews from people with very short play times. This game is a long hual real time MMO that can take up to a year to complete a single world. It take devolping team work with others and learning how to best build as well as patience to see things grow. This is no buy an army and go to war over night game which what these short time bad review players seem to expect. If you are looking for a game that takes planning ahead well in advance in a grand strategry MMO this is the perfect game for you. You can plan out months in advance and have the time to adjust those plans as things change around you while you work towards them with the others in the country you join or create.
Can't recommend this game. After spending almost 1,000 hours on this game I've come to the conclusion that the game is not worth it at all. The game takes a really long time to actually get started and get "interesting" But you could get the enjoyment times 2 if you just played Civilization 4 (or any civ game to be fair). I decided to quit when the game showed how unbalanced it was when one guy air-attacked my city once, causing me to lose my Deposit, which normally would be fine however the cost to re-colonize it was what made be ragequit the game. I needed 750 workers, and for reference it takes 2 people to make 1 worker, and the city had a max of 2011 People. So in order to get my Deposit back after an AIR ATTACK (not even a land attack ffs), I needed to spend 1,500 people to get it back. BUT WAIT IT GETS BETTER! It would also take 2 entire ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ days (real-life days) to get said workers, But all the people I would lose I would have to regain which would take 10+ days. And to top all that off that means I wouldn't be able to produce any fruit, or wood, or gold which could result in my city litterally dying off or going backrupt. This isn't including that It would take 10+ hours just to recolonize the deposit, or that another player could take my deposit and steal it from me. To summerize. All because one Air-based attack, I would have to waste 12+ days just to get back to normal. Please, don't waste an entire year of your life on this forsaken game. Just buy one of the Civilization games when they're on sale, (I recommend Civ 4.) cause at least it won't take 12 days of your life just to reclaim one deposit! Extra Notes Below. Theres even more problems the game has that other people have listed, the community is heavily against new-players and very few try to help them out, the systems are very unbalanced (My Deposit story should be enough proof of it), it takes a year just to finish 1 world, Servers frequently have problems and sometimes they have to go back a day because of a server issue, a lot of non-english players (not the games fault tho), and more. The only really good thing that I liked about this game was it actually has a 3D combat system with thousands of units, it's like Total War! Now if it only worked more then 5% of the time... And if only you could view the battles in Real Time as they occur and actually give commands to units.

STAY AWAY! This game is buggy! During my time in this game I encountered several bugs. The worst one was during my last TEN days when I coulden´t do anything inside my towns or on the map! Basicly all I could do was to transfers stuff like wood or food between my towns until my storages was all filled up... This game is "uneven"/unfair! When my country was in the medieval times I got attacked by JET BOMBERS. Can you play fair when jets attack knights? The playerbase often sucks! Bullying smaller players is more common in this game then in any other game I have played! The players around me all went barbarian when larger players wiped them out (by jet bombing them to ashes). This game favors "veterans" who play together and kick the "#¤%#"¤ out of new players! A new player can´t do anything then to play as canon fodder! In the country I joined several veterans suddenly started to plunder the countrys gold coffins and then they left one by one. Basicly robbing the fellow "friends" they had, just to join other countries. When I spoke with another player he stated that this was common way to get cash fast and to robb new players without them beeing able to do anything about it. So: 1. Buggy game (at least in steam) 2. Uneven gameplay 3. Rude and backstabbing playerbase I can´t recommend play this game at all, STAY AWAY from it!
