This is a bit of badly made amateur Unreal Engine garbageware that DIG Games somehow "acquired" from another developer and are shoveling onto Steam. As a game, it's a really, really badly done third person action/combat game where you're some cyber guy and you fight anime looking robots or something. This makes the game sound far more appealing than it is. It's a clunky disaster with cludged controls, zero optimisation, terrible game assets, hand made drawings of the characters in the laughably badly written dialogue bits... this really is awful. Comically, while this is trying to be like The Matrix or something, the combat is all just the protagonist holding his arms straight and slapping them into the enemy until the enemy dies, or, more mercifully, you do, and then the pain of playing this garbage stops. DIG Games have shown a repeat pattern of unethically pushing asset flips and plagiarised works as a cheap, nasty cash grab, through this account or through closely linked/alt accounts. Here's some examples so you can see for yourself:

"ChicScape" = Mobile Tools + Complete Game (Jumpy) developed by GleyGames
"Lack of Water" = Happy Glass Source Code developed by SellAnyCode
"Stapel" = Stack developed by Telecoda
"Candy Mandy" = Match 3 Jelly Garden Kit developed by Candy Smith
"Yabgits: Haunted Cemetery" = Block Breaker Template developed by Daniel Buckley
"Monkey Hit" = Kong Hero – Platformer Complete Game Template developed by ADDPGAMES
These are just some of the nasty asset flips from DIG Games... and there's more every week as the developer spams Steam with garbage to try get a few roubles out of PC gamers. Taking this shovelware seriously as if it was a genuine attempt to make a game, it doesn't meet basic minimum requirements that most PC gamers expect as standard. This looks a lot like it was designed for consoles, but released on Steam instead by mistake. While this is on PC, it has all the hallmarks and deficiencies of a console game, from the clunkier than needed control scheme to the less than cutting edge graphics. There's 10's of thousands of PC games on Steam, and PC gamers deserve only the best. This might not appeal to many gamers due to the lack of PC-centric design. It's unclear why this never made it to the video game console appliances it seems to have been designed for. The developers didn't design the game for modern gaming PCs, as such the display resolution caps out at 1080p, a very low resolution that became mainstream back in 2006 and became obsolete when 4K entered the mainstream in 2014. The game simply won't look right on modern gaming displays due to this failure on the part of the developers. The game assets are fairly mediocre/low quality, in some places they appear mismatched... Ultimately the quality of these assets, and thus the overall visual quality is lower than average, and low quality always makes for a less than optimal gaming experience. Remember, we're looking for the best of the best of 140,000+ games on Steam. These flaws make this game fall far short of the professional standards we expect from a modern PC game. War-Gene didn't capture much interest from the people who own the game. The achievement data makes this clear: the easiest achievement, "Sword of Sanctum", playing this garbage, was only unlocked by 17 percent of players. Even the simplest milestone went unreached by the vast majority of owners. Hardly a ringing endorsement. The poor quality of this game is also reflected by how many people spent time with it. At the time of this review, SteamDB shows the game all-time peak player count was only ONE player. That's right, only one person ever played this at a time. When I played this for the purposes of reviewing it, I equalled the peak player count for the game. OUCH. The only player activity occurs once or twice a month, presumably someone loading it up to see what it is then quickly uninstalling it. Considering there's over 130 million gamers on Steam and well over 140,000 games for gamers to choose from, the overwhelming lack of interest in this low quality game is to be expected. Let's talk about price and the value this represents for us gamers. Should you buy this game? Is it among the best the Steam catalogue has to offer? War-Gene has the almost unethical price of around $8 USD, it's not worth it given the defects and shortcomings with the product, especially considering the unethical nature of the developer. For comparison, the $8 asking price for this game could get you games like "Project Zomboid", "Subnautica" or "Yakuza Kiwami". Quality, professionally made games like those are frequently on sale cheaper than this. Ethics aside, the quality problems and defects with this game makes the asking price totally unrealistic. It's impossible to recommend this to gamers here on Steam, especially considering the unethical stuff going on.
Profile Features Limited! Valve have marked this game as "Profile Features Limited" at the time of this review. This is usually caused by poor sales figures and low community acceptance for the game (to date). Until this status changes, this game will not give you +1 to your Game Collector badge count, appear in profile achievements or any other Steam meta-accomplishments, nor can it be displayed in some profile showcases. If these factors are important to you, it may be worth holding off before buying this game.
War-Gene is a science-fiction action RPG developed and published by Fang Of Moon that blends high-speed combat, anime-inspired visuals, and souls-like challenge into a futuristic adventure centered on cybernetic warfare. The game places players in the role of Phoenix, a heavily augmented soldier whose past is clouded by mystery and whose future becomes entangled in a political crisis involving the death of a king. While the narrative serves as a foundation for the action, the real focus lies in the game's energetic combat system and its emphasis on skill-driven encounters. From the moment combat begins, War-Gene demonstrates its commitment to fluid and aggressive gameplay. Battles revolve around chaining attacks together, evading enemy strikes, and creating opportunities for devastating counterattacks. Rather than encouraging a defensive approach, the game rewards players who remain mobile and constantly pressure their opponents. Every fight feels designed around maintaining momentum, with dodges, weapon attacks, and special techniques flowing naturally into one another. This creates a satisfying rhythm that makes even routine encounters feel engaging. The variety of enemies helps prevent combat from becoming repetitive. Players face both human and mechanical adversaries, ranging from soldiers to advanced robotic threats. These encounters require different tactics and encourage experimentation with combat strategies. Learning enemy attack patterns and identifying the right moments to strike becomes increasingly important as the difficulty rises. Fans of action games that reward precision and mastery will likely appreciate the challenge offered by War-Gene's encounters. A notable aspect of the game is its futuristic setting. The world combines advanced technology with a militarized atmosphere, creating an environment where cybernetic enhancements and artificial intelligence are central themes. Phoenix's enhanced body is more than just a gameplay mechanic; it also plays a key role in the story. Questions surrounding his memories and possible involvement in a royal assassination add intrigue to the narrative and provide motivation for players to continue uncovering the truth. Although storytelling is not the game's strongest feature, the mystery element adds enough depth to keep the adventure moving forward. Visually, War-Gene embraces a distinct anime-inspired style. Character designs, combat effects, and futuristic environments contribute to a presentation that feels energetic and colorful. The art direction may not rival the production values of major studios, but it succeeds in giving the game its own identity. Flashy attacks and stylish animations help make battles visually exciting, reinforcing the game's focus on speed and action. As an independent project, War-Gene inevitably shows some limitations. Certain areas may feel rough around the edges compared to larger-budget action RPGs, and players expecting extensive world-building or highly polished cinematic storytelling may find the experience somewhat modest. However, the game's ambition deserves recognition. It successfully combines elements from several popular genres while maintaining a unique personality built around cybernetic combat and futuristic themes. What ultimately makes War-Gene enjoyable is its dedication to delivering fast-paced action without unnecessary complications. The combat system remains the centerpiece throughout the experience, providing enough depth to reward practice while remaining accessible to newcomers. Its blend of science-fiction storytelling, anime aesthetics, and challenging encounters creates an experience that stands out within the indie action RPG space. For players who enjoy stylish combat games, futuristic settings, and skill-based battles, War-Gene offers a worthwhile adventure. While it may not redefine the genre, it delivers enough excitement, challenge, and personality to leave a positive impression. Fang Of Moon's project demonstrates creativity and enthusiasm, resulting in a game that can satisfy fans looking for a lesser-known action title with a strong focus on combat. Rating: 6/10
