About

Wallpaper Engine aims to deliver an entertaining experience while using as few system resources as possible. You can choose to automatically pause or completely stop the wallpaper while using another application or playing fullscreen (including borderless windowed mode) to not distract or hinder you while playing a game or working. Many options to tweak quality and performance allow you to make Wallpaper Engine fit your computer perfectly. As a general rule of thumb, 3D, 2D and video based wallpapers will perform best, while websites and applications will require more resources from your system. Having a dedicated GPU is highly recommended, but not required.
Choose from over a million free wallpapers from the Steam Workshop with new wallpapers being uploaded every day! Can't find a wallpaper that fits your mood? Let your imagination go wild by using the Wallpaper Engine Editor to create your own animated wallpapers from images, videos, websites or applications. A large selection of presets and effects allow you to animate your own images and share them on the Steam Workshop or to just use them for yourself.Genres

Wallpaper is the only solution that i've been able to find that allows you to have animated desktops without either a huge amount of effort/work with convoluted instructions/explanations/complexity (looking at you rainmeter) whilst the others are just a bunch of weird hacks/loop holes using weird legacy windows stuff. The other option are unverifable github projects (who knows what you're running on your system). So whilst Wallpaper Engine is the only option it is filled to the brim with easy to understand, intuitive setup and config sections, functions and capabilities. You can set the frame rate, resolution, you can globally mute wallpapers. You can set search pareamters so easily (I wish the big search engines would do the same re setting resolution and monitor sizes) There are extensive libaries of easily searchable wallpapers. You can even subscribe to wallpapers via browsing people on steam itself. A few things to note: you want to ensure that you put your Wallpaper engine on a drive that has a heap of storage. Your wallpapers are saved in the same way that workshop mods are. If you're like me and run 4k monitors you will quickly blow past 20GB plus. The second thing is that in the settings you can tell Wallpaper Engine to suspend itself whilst you run another application. Some games don't like Wallpaper engine (usually they won't play well with Steam overlay either). So if you have wallpaper engine suspend you can avoid weird crash to desktops. In summary wallpaper engine is a must have. Its a great engine. More importantly you can even create your own animated desktops.
