Probably the best "competitive" match-3 game I've played. You play through a story mode to unlock abilities, but only start with 2 while your opponents have 4-6. This results in a gaming experience where you're likely to lose at least a few of your first several matches. The game also uses the rare mechanic where you can move a single gem/piece as far as you want horizontally/vertically. There's an "online" mode, but after 35 seconds of trying to find a match the game defaults to an AI. I know it was an AI because Steam Charts said there was only 1 person playing lol. Still, pretty easy achievements if you don't mind spending a couple hours playing a well thought-out match-3 experience with honestly-not-great ecchi content. There are some 2D live scenes with generic voice acting after you download the free DLC, but they're easily the weakest part of the experience.
Waifu Crush is a hybrid puzzle and character-driven game that takes the familiar match-3 formula and reshapes it into something more competitive, strategic, and personality-focused. Rather than functioning as a purely casual puzzle experience, the game frames its mechanics within a tournament structure where puzzle matches act as direct confrontations between characters. This competitive framing immediately changes how players approach the genre, shifting the focus from mindless clearing of tiles to deliberate planning, timing, and the careful use of special abilities. The result is a game that feels more like a tactical duel than a simple puzzle pastime. At the mechanical core of Waifu Crush is an unconventional take on match-3 movement. Instead of being locked into rigid grid constraints, players are given greater freedom to manipulate pieces along rows and columns, allowing for more intentional setup of combos and chain reactions. Matches translate directly into in-game advantages, effectively turning puzzle efficiency into offensive and defensive pressure. This system rewards foresight and board awareness, as players who plan several moves ahead can create decisive swings rather than relying on lucky cascades. The inclusion of charms and modifiers deepens this layer further, introducing abilities that alter board behavior, disrupt opponents, or amplify scoring potential. Progression is closely tied to both mastery of the puzzle system and interaction with the game’s cast of characters. As players advance through the Super M3 Tournament, they encounter a variety of opponents, each designed with distinct personalities and visual styles that help differentiate encounters beyond raw mechanics. These interactions borrow lightly from visual novel conventions, offering dialogue and relationship elements that provide context and motivation for continued play. While the narrative is not deeply complex, it succeeds in giving the tournament structure a sense of continuity and personality, preventing the game from feeling like a series of disconnected puzzle stages. The game’s mature themes and anime-inspired presentation play a significant role in defining its identity. Character artwork is expressive and stylized, clearly catering to fans of romantic and adult-leaning visual aesthetics. This presentation is not merely decorative; it reinforces the game’s tone and target audience, shaping expectations about the kind of experience on offer. For players comfortable with these themes, the art direction adds charm and personality, though it may be off-putting for those seeking a more neutral or family-friendly puzzle experience. Waifu Crush also attempts to broaden its appeal through multiple modes of play. Player-versus-environment encounters serve as a training ground where systems can be learned and strategies refined, while player-versus-player matches introduce a competitive edge that tests puzzle skill against human unpredictability. In theory, this adds longevity and replay value, but in practice the multiplayer experience depends heavily on player availability. When active, PvP highlights the depth of the puzzle mechanics; when inactive, it can feel like an underutilized feature rather than a central pillar. Despite its creative ambitions, the game is not without shortcomings. Tutorials and explanations of advanced mechanics can be sparse, leaving new players to piece together deeper systems through trial and error. Balance between charms and strategies can feel uneven at times, and some elements of the interface and flow lack the refinement seen in more polished puzzle titles. These issues do not break the experience, but they do create friction that can dampen enjoyment, particularly for players expecting a smoother onboarding process. Overall, Waifu Crush stands as a niche but distinctive entry in the puzzle genre, offering a blend of strategic match-3 gameplay, character interaction, and competitive structure that sets it apart from more traditional offerings. Its strengths lie in the freedom of its puzzle mechanics and the way it transforms matching tiles into a form of tactical combat. While uneven polish and limited multiplayer activity prevent it from fully realizing its potential, the game remains an interesting choice for players who enjoy experimental puzzle designs and anime-styled character experiences wrapped in a tournament-driven framework.
