While Void Source is clearly lacking a lot of polish, I was going to let quite a bit of that slide with it being an indie game. Unfortunately several things really just can't be overlooked. In no particular order: The game crashed mid-game occasionally. If you make the mistake of clicking "new game" instead of "continue" your previous progress is immediately overwritten with no prompting. The tech tree is a joke, you can earn enough points to unlock all technologies by playing the first level 3-4 times going for a high combo. The power-up system was not thought through. The point combo system was not thought through. There is no progression, you can play any level at any time. Some levels are incredibly short compared to the others. A lot feels phoned in. I generally try to complete every game I play (all achievements). I was going to make the attempt for this game too, but after losing my progress, it's really just not worth it.
This will scratch the mid to late 90s shareware or flash games SHUMP. It's an OK game with a little extra i.e. C+. Not bad if it's on sale. Most of my enjoyment was trying out all the bullet types on the (very easy to unlock) tech tree. The weapons are hit or miss for usefulness but that's part of the charm. you can tell they are just trying different stuff b/c they can, not that it's a super refine polishing. The Player is thank during the credits which is a big plus in my book. Quick Start Tip: When you locked your weapon tree only select (turn green) one or two weapons at a time. Makes the game less chaotic and you have a better feel of what they can do. Don't like them? Just Pause, quit to Map, and respec.
Void Source is an indie shoot ‘em up that embraces the philosophy of classic arcade gaming while incorporating a few modern progression systems to keep players engaged beyond a single playthrough. Developed by Xitilon and Lovixsama and published by Xitilon, the game places players in control of a UFO tasked with surviving waves of hostile enemies across a variety of dangerous environments. Rather than focusing on story-driven content, the game is built around pure action, quick reflexes, and the satisfaction of mastering increasingly difficult combat encounters. One of the most appealing aspects of Void Source is its fast-paced gameplay. The action begins almost immediately and rarely slows down, creating a constant sense of urgency. Players must navigate through enemy formations, dodge incoming projectiles, and unleash a wide range of weapons in every direction. The multidirectional shooting system allows for a great deal of freedom during combat, making encounters feel dynamic and engaging. Success depends not only on firepower but also on movement, positioning, and awareness of the battlefield. The game offers a respectable amount of variety through its environments and stage design. Levels take players through underwater regions, volcanic landscapes, cavernous areas, railroad zones, and outer-space battlefields. Each setting features distinct visual themes and enemy arrangements that help maintain interest throughout the campaign. While the overall structure remains rooted in traditional arcade shooter design, the changing scenery prevents the experience from becoming visually repetitive and adds a sense of progression as players advance. A major strength of Void Source is its extensive arsenal. The game includes numerous weapons that can dramatically alter combat strategies. Players are encouraged to experiment with different loadouts to discover combinations that suit their preferred playstyle. The ability to stack duplicate weapon pickups adds another layer of depth, rewarding careful resource management and allowing powerful builds to emerge during successful runs. Combined with the game's technology tree progression system, weapon customization creates a satisfying sense of growth that extends beyond individual stages. Boss encounters are among the most memorable parts of the experience. These large-scale battles demand quick reactions and careful observation of attack patterns. Unlike standard enemies, bosses often require players to fully utilize their arsenal and movement abilities to survive. Their impressive size and aggressive attacks create climactic moments that break up the regular stage progression and provide some of the game's greatest challenges. The inclusion of a dedicated Boss Rush mode further enhances replay value for players who enjoy testing their skills against the game's toughest opponents. Visually, Void Source strikes a balance between retro inspiration and modern presentation. Colorful effects, detailed backgrounds, and energetic animations contribute to an enjoyable arcade atmosphere. Optional scanline filters allow players to recreate the appearance of classic arcade displays, reinforcing the nostalgic feel without sacrificing clarity. The soundtrack complements the action well, delivering energetic music that helps maintain excitement during lengthy firefights and intense boss battles. Despite its strengths, the game is not without limitations. The campaign is relatively short, and experienced players may reach the end within a few hours. While replayability is supported through weapon experimentation, higher difficulty challenges, and the Boss Rush mode, some players may still wish for additional stages or content. Certain encounters can also become visually chaotic, occasionally making it difficult to distinguish enemy attacks amid the on-screen effects. These issues do not significantly damage the overall experience, but they do prevent the game from reaching the highest tier of the genre. What ultimately makes Void Source enjoyable is its commitment to delivering straightforward arcade entertainment. It does not attempt to reinvent the shoot ‘em up formula. Instead, it focuses on responsive controls, exciting combat, diverse weapons, and memorable boss encounters. The result is a polished indie shooter that understands exactly what its audience wants and delivers it with confidence. Rating: 7/10

Pixels flicker like an old TV every level is an eye test and I still don't see the plot here.
