This game puts a fresh spin on the horde survival genre with a unique vine-linked dual-character system that's seamlessly playable solo. The horde survival genre started with a small indie title and expanded into a flood of more or less successful releases. Just when it seemed like every possible idea had already been explored and the genre was running out of steam, a new game occasionally emerges with a unique twist. In this one, that twist is a magical vine connecting two characters. While it sounds like you’d need a second player, the game also includes a solo mode where the second character is replaced by a fairy. The fairy can be controlled—ideally using a gamepad, since each analog stick manages one character—but it's also immune to enemy damage, allowing you to push it into crowds to break them apart and cause direct damage. The vine keeps both characters from moving too far apart or too close together. If the distance limit is breached, the vine pulls them back. This distance matters because it's tied to your attack. A flower travels along the vine between characters, and each one only attacks when the flower touches them. This means the closer you are, the more frequently you’ll attack—but being too close slows you down. Weapon attack patterns vary and are designed to complement both characters. For example, the bow allows one to fire horizontally while the other shoots vertically. Attacks are automatic and don’t target the nearest enemy, so positioning is key. Since you don’t aim manually, all you need to focus on is movement. Other mechanics stick close to genre standards. The goal is to survive while killing enemies and collecting the juice they drop. Both characters share one juice bar, so it doesn’t matter which of them collects it. Once enough juice is gathered, a perk window appears with three random options. You can upgrade your weapon—boosting attack speed, projectiles, and more—or pick gear upgrades that affect your character, like increased juice attraction or movement speed. Upgrades can be stacked up to three times to improve their effect, but perks apply only to the character who receives them—upgrading one doesn’t help the other. The game includes three stages, unlocked in order as you beat them. A run begins by choosing a character (each with their own perk) and a starting weapon. New characters are unlocked by meeting known requirements, which can be seen in a separate upgrade menu. Run success is determined by how long you survive. The longer you last, the tougher the enemies become. The main goal is to reach ten minutes or survive until the stage boss appears. Mini-bosses spawn every two minutes and, when defeated, drop a chest. To open one, you must stay inside a circle for a few seconds. Chests are key as they grant free upgrades. Permanent upgrades come from sunflowers, earned by surviving longer. Like perks, each upgrade can be purchased up to three times. Upgrades are handled in the main menu, letting you enhance characters with preset boosts (not individual stats like speed or damage). And on the other side you have gear upgrades that unlock a fourth level and bump the starting item from level 1 to 2. New gear is unlocked randomly when you collect special gold seeds, and then becomes available in future playthroughs.
No one seems to be talking about how little content there is in this game. There are only 3 levels, which you can beat in an hour or two. If you're good at these kinds of games you could probably beat it in about 1.5hrs... Also, I unlocked all of the cards already, which surprised me. After a few hours more I have all the best cards upgraded. Not much to do after you beat the game other than play the same 3 levels more with arbitrarily faster more damaging enemies.. The quality of what is here is top notch, better than the competition. But until there is more content I can't give a good review.
Some of the best co-op content I've played in years! Co-op works way better than in Vampire Survivors IMO because it's meant to be played with a friend ideally, with the core mechanics all using that in their favor (but single player is also covered for). Each match takes 10 minutes give or take. The weapons are fun to use, the game is always showing something new and making you feel more powerful, and the art is absolutely delightful! 100% recommended.
Single co-op vampire survivor game. Perfect if you are on the verge of divorce!
This game is actually incredible. For just 5 dollars, I got almost 5 hours of incredible fun with a friend (using remote play) There are tons of cool builds you can run. I'm going to recommend using a bomb build. Pump + flower ring + Clover and the Necro cola sauce!
It's been a while since I played such a good co-op game like this. In this game you REALLY need to coordinate with your friend to complete a run. I recommend it if you have someone on your friends list to play with via remote play.
It is a fun game. it gives you that distinctive feeling of 'just one more run’ but is never just one more. it is fun when playing solo, but even better in couch co-op play. love the creativity in of weapons and upgrades. Great art, smooth gameplay and it runs perfectly on Steamdeck. I definitely recommend it.
Vinebound is a ton of fun! It begins calmly, but soon escalates into chaos. Experimenting with different builds and combos keeps every round fresh. It's fun to test your duo coordination, but also exciting to play solo. Highly recommend, for both playing solo or with a friend.
