Fantastic game. Fun mechanics, well written and well paced.
Really fun and inventive meta RPG, the boss fights keep introducing new mechanics and the game makes the most out of the sentient video game character premise, Enjoyed it thoroughly and can't wait to try out the DLC
Video Game Fables is a lighthearted romp through an old-school RPG world that doesn’t take itself too seriously. There’s some quirky characters and a tongue-in-cheek plot underpinning some simple, but solid, battle mechanics. Retro RPG purists and fans of fourth wall breaking comedy will enjoy this one if they’re able to look past the scattershot visual design and sluggish pace. For a game that looks like a rushed out high-school project, it’s surprisingly good. Enemies are varied, both in how they look but also how they fight. Each region has their own gimmick like giving each other crits, buffing their defense and “always focusing on the weakest member”. Those aren’t that difficult battles, but simply spamming attack won’t get you far. Bosses are also very varied in very surprising ways. One forces you to, on top of fighting a boss battle, also switch POVs to shoot an endless horde of enemies approaching you. And if you run out of time you skip your turn. Another requires you to time the attack ANIMATION so you hit a gap in a boss’s barrier. One even turns it into an Rock Paper Scissors fight. Very fun and interesting boss battles. The plot is simple, but fun and lighthearted with many funny moments. A lot of them come from Aru, the main protagonist and Princess… who is very done with everything and it shows. Some moments with her are absolutely glorious. Nate, our Hero, is very cheerful to the point where he’s the only one who cheerfully bounces back and forth during his turn. No one else does this and it’s a nice detail. Tator, the “Villain”, can raise a monument of his father to crush enemies with his disappointment. An amazing ability second only to Nate’s nuclear pan. The game is… at decent length. It took me just a little less than 12 hours to beat it. The only time I have ever felt “done” with this game was during the second-to-last dungeon. I give it 8/10. One point off because, like I said, this game looks like a highschooler’s first game project. Second point off due to a few annoying dungeons: Like Deathrate’z Mine and Veruca’s Fortress. That’s when the game gets tedious. Both are rather long and their gimmick is rather annoying.
It may look like a low-detailed rpg, but it's a low-detailed rpg with the most fun awaiting thee
finally, another turn/party based rpg very similar to paper mario series and bug fables. It is very short compared to those games as it only last around 12-15hrs, but it is very fun all the way through. I wish more games like this were made. +battle system, different compared to other games. You have HP, and instead of skill points you have CRIT system, basic attacks grant crits that can enables skills (certain ones need them, but the crit effects all skills). Almost all skills were useful, no filler or unnecessary skills, later on each skill can transform into a different variation. Instead of separate levels, the team shares the level. They also share XP which lets you equip items and skills. +unique battles. major fights took different turns and twists, even the gameplay changed up. refreshing +funny dialogue, while it does come off as a parody game, they have an original script, by not following the script. lmao! Each person has their own moment to shine throughout the game. +great ost +controller support - not a big con, some parts were a bit choppy (late game cutscenes, some parts of the overworld) this game was made by one dev, so we'll let it slide. - if you love yourself, do not jump behind the sleepy dudes inn, specifically near his window :D Play this game, its a hidden gem, and well worth the time and money, waiting on your next project! 이렇게 평범하게 재미있는 게임은 해 본 적이 없습니다 OST 쩔어요
I have some mixed feelings. Parts of the game were brilliant, and some parts had me doubting I would continue... But it is a very lovingly crafted RPG, and I am glad I made it to the ending sections. Pros: +Music was delightful +3D Pixel art character were expressive, and cutely designed +Combat had some unusual twists example:(no mana, so skills can be used unlimitedly, though offensive skills required a "critical point," gained through attacking (% chance) or some other item or skill. +There were a variety of gimmicks and minigames usually focused around bosses that were fun. +The characters were lighthearted. +Did I mention the characters were expressive? :D Cutscenes were gold. Neutral: ~Characters could have used more fleshing out. I'd say it is perfect for a younger audience though? Paper Mario vibe? ~Walking speed seems a bit slow at times Cons(?): -The start of the game was actually probably too open. I ended up ignoring the objective and travelling the entire world, leveling up to the point where I could fight anything on the overworld with careful overpowered skill cheesing. This might have broken any sense of balance with combat later on... Whoops. -Monsters attack at very regular intervals. And fleeing combat exacts a price. You lose a bit of gold each time... And in the beginning the cost seemed too high, so I avoided running for most of the game, resulting in way too much grinding in places... I should have been running a lot more. -Some dungeons are maze-like, which isn't a real problem... except for the constant monster attacks. I really only felt this way midway through the game. -And some of the art designs... (Like the rainbow bridge dungeon face, that was the first time I began to doubt...) -Fishing was too simple lol I was looking for the next Undertale or Underhero, or Oneshot... what I got was a lot lighter. I think a younger audience could really appreciate this game. I'll give it a recommend. My advice, try the demo and see if it's for you~
I should have reviewed this game a lot earlier but tbh I wanted to review it when I finished it and then I forgot about the game and died, oops It's a good game though, the worst thing I can say about it is that it looks like one person made the game, but that's because one person made the game. Combat is fun and the dialogue is pretty funny, it reminds me somewhat of Paper Mario.
