One of the shortest games I've played -- I beat the entire game in just under 3 hours. Yes, there IS optional content, but most of it is blocked off because of the way the game closes off routes after a certain point in the story. In other words, most of the game's optional content is permanently missable, and there's no NG+ or postgame to speak of. Why??? Not only is it barebones, but it lacks QoL. There's no quicksave feature. There's not even an option to restart a battle if things get hopeless, meaning you need to manually Alt+F4 the game JUST to restart a battle. Oh, and if that weren't already bad enough: there's no "skip cutscene" button, so every time you restart a battle, you'll need to click through all of the dialogue all over again. You're seriously telling me a game that doesn't even surpass 3 hours' worth of playtime can't be bothered to check up on basic QoL like this? Gameplay isn't terrible, but it isn't very interesting, either. You only control 3 very basic characters for a decent chunk of the early game, and your party size increases to... 5 by the endgame. You play on extremely small maps, your characters only have a few abilities each, and they only have 3 or 4 mobility. There are no class trees, skill trees, or anything of that sort -- just a very basic shop which starts running out of new items about 2/3 through the game. Thus, there's very little in the way of tactically rich gameplay, and most game overs are the result of bad luck, such as an 80% missing, or the ally AI deciding to do something stupid. The story has some good bits here and there, but the whole thing is too vaguely narrated. We don't get much in the way of characterization or backstory, so once a critical character is introduced in the final battle... it just doesn't hit as hard as it should. There's no real emotion behind any of it because 1) the game doesn't do a good job of contextualizing its narrative and 2) the game doesn't do a good job of developing its characters. Vanaris Tactics certainly could've benefited from... you know... more than 3 hours' worth of playtime to sufficiently flesh out its setting, characters, and plot. I'm just disappointed, more than I am anything else. I played the demo and it seemed decent, but it was ultimately a letdown. It's far from the worst SRPG I've played, but it's not a good one either... and it's definitely not worth $10, given its barebones nature and lack of replay value + postgame. I got it for 50% off, and even then, I'm not sure it was worth it. I'd give Vanaris Tactics a D+ at best.
Like Final Fantasy Tactics, but without the enjoyment.
You are commanding a squad with no particular advantage, they have no longer range, no higher damage, no aoe. And your foe has all that. Imagine the author invented all the tactic tools and only gave those to your enemies. Yep. You'd be craving to have some and then soon enough you find out grind is the only way forward. A lvl 7 goblins can cast high damage long range lighting ball aoe and the only one with a puny aoe in your lvl 11 team is a slow-ass melee. Good luck about that. Have fun.
To całkiem obiecujący punkt wyjścia do mocnej, emocjonalnej historii, prawda? The game is pretty basic and the dialogue falls flatter than a piece of paper. It was a slog to go through and the only reason I have 8 hours is because it is an easy 100%.
Vanaris Tactics offers a poignant exploration of the refugee experience through the lens of tactical RPG gameplay. The game’s narrative, while brief, effectively conveys the desperation and hope of a people fleeing their occupied homeland. Players are tasked with leading a group of refugees, utilizing tactical prowess to outmaneuver their oppressors and find freedom beyond Vanaris’ walls. The tactical combat is engaging, demanding strategic thinking and careful planning. While the core mechanics are solid, the game might have benefited from additional depth and complexity for seasoned tactical RPG enthusiasts. Rating : 7.5/10 Ultimately, Vanaris Tactics is a commendable effort to shed light on a crucial humanitarian issue. While its brevity might leave players wanting more, it delivers a powerful message and a satisfying tactical experience.
Bought this game to support a solo independent developer making a similar game I would like to create. Leaving a positive review, but I didn't like the game. I hope your next game is better. Big lore dump at the beginning. No dialogue choices to provide any interaction during. Didn't like. If I can't make choices choices immediately or if the beginning doesn't have a cinematic of sorts to really pull me in, I'm bored and don't care about the lore. The shop had nearly nothing to offer after the first mission. I felt like I wasted my time there except to buy potions. Could'a just given me more potions and moved me directly into the next fight. Couldn't figure out how to rotate my characters in the character setup in the 2nd mission. I pressed every button on my keyboard and mouse. Am I stupid? Did I miss the rotate character button. That broke me, then I couldn't exit the game intuitively. Alt+F4'd out. I say this because I wanted to like the game but didn't. I hope this feedback is useful. I will not be playing it any longer. Please polish your first 10 minutes to a mirror sheen and hook me before building a full game. I am high and wrote this review. Thank you.
Vanaris Tactics - Uma grata surpresas vinda do cenário BRASILEIRO.
A atmosfera visual é agradável e bastante nostálgica. 😎👍 🇧🇷
Honestly im not a fan of pixel art but somehow i sat through this game, i realised one thing tho, these games are the core of the AAA or AA games. Vanaris tactics has a good story, the usual gameplay turn based rpg elements, but in the end i found this game interesting just because of the pixel art and the story. Now im open to try more pixel art games.
