Unity Invaders

Unity Invaders is a free to play "Space Invaders" ripoff put together with Unity. It's a bare bones 2D retro pixel arcade shoot 'em up that lacks even some of the deeper nuance of Space Invaders (from 1978). It was assembled as a high school project and lacks any aspects of professional game development. Resolution and controls are locked, and can't be changed or customised to improve the visuals or the control experience. A choice was made to use obsolete retro pixel "art" as a substitute for contemporary PC graphics. The developers were unable to make the game work properly in widescreen, it displays 4:3 pillarboxed. It's unclear if these flaws are due to lack of budget or talent, regardless, the overall visual quality of the game is extremely low as a result. These flaws push this game far below minimum acceptable standards for PC. It's great that Unity allows high school students to learn how to make video games. It doesn't mean that it's okay for them to dump this garbage on Steam to make the average quality of video games worse. Itch.io and Kongregate are the proper dumping grounds for this kind of junk. There's no value for serious PC gamers in a lame ripoff of Space Invaders that, despite releasing over 40 years after the original game, isn't even close to as good. The game is completely free. Nothing speaks more to a developers belief in themselves and their product than making their game available for everyone without remuneration. This is certainly a gesture that shows dedication to the gaming industry. It's a shame in this case that the implementation is below the minimum standards a dedicated PC game should offer to enthusiasts. There's no "maybe" option in Steam, unfortunately, but I hope to see more work from this developer, perhaps as part of a professional game development company that can make full use of their talents without needing to make budget/quality compromises.
