I'm already in love with this one It's just fun galopping around doing nonsense The world is beautiful, the other horsies are fun to interact with and most of all, you can customize your unicorn There are also quests to do, horse shoes to collect and much other things I haven't figured out yet This satisfies my girlie needs very well :D
This is horse girl (gender neutral) wish fulfilment! I would have had a blast with this as a kid, but it was very unexpectedly enjoyable as an adult too. Me and my spouse went in expecting to get a laugh out of it at most, and instead we had fun unironically! The controls are not super intuitive. I used a gamepad as Steam advertises this as something that would work "great" with a gamepad, but oh boy that was not the case. You eventually get used to the controls, even though aiming your horn magic and navigating menus remain a bit of a pain. As you have no health bar and you cannot die in the game that reduces the frustration of the controls quite a lot, but you might have a better experience playing with keyboard and mouse. I did not encounter any bugs and the game runs surprisingly well with all graphic options maxed out on my very non-gaming laptop. The voice-acting is very well done and the dialogues are entertaining. The world is simple, yet beautiful, especially the lighting on the island and the atmosphere in the void. The books and the "lore" are decently written, but there are a lot of mysteries that were not explored and the story is a bit of a mess. Nonetheless, we enjoyed finding the books around the world and reading them all, and children would love them I think! The DS9 and Skyrim references are cool and there are lots of cute hats and powers! I wish the ending wasn't as rushed and that the game was a bit longer and there were more quests, as you can finish everything in 3-5 hours. Also having more (useful) powers and more combat opportunities would be nice. Unlocking the pegasus form and the dark unicorn power gave me sheer child-like joy, which I was not expecting either. You can feel the passion that went into this game at every step of the journey, and that is something that no amount of extra funding or polish could replace. Honestly kudos to the developers for creating this adorable world, as someone with zero game development experience I can imagine the effort that it took. Thank you for making something with passion, care and zero microtransactions. To be honest I would recommend this silly game to everyone as long as you know what to expect. Definitely give it a try especially if it is on sale, you like horses/unicorns and you want a short, whimsy, cosy adventure with a lot of heart and a bit of clunk, you will not regret it!
Hhrrrng..... Unicorn.
this is a game for crackheads who love unicorns. are you a crackhead that loves unicorns? shut up yes you are buy this game you're gonna have a blast
Unicorn Tails is whimsy fun - I genuinely love plenty of the magic spells (levitation and ice are my favorites), but it is also janky as hell and feels unfinished in parts. The writing is weak, leaving the unicorn society and their mythology feeling bland. The main appeal of the game is galloping around as a unicorn - and I wish they would have leaned harder into the horse aspect! It's a pity that Unicorn Island feels like a human settlement, with their fully furnished houses in the village (navigating doors is annoying as a horse), their royalty and the castle, plus the part in the lore where the issue is an argument about paying taxes to the mainland (it doesn't SAY taxes but that was my takeaway from one of the history books). There's also plenty of jank, any of which by itself would not be a big deal, but it adds up. Some examples in the graphics: there's an option to change your unicorn colors, but these changes keep reverting, or the quest board appearing full when there's no new quests. Finishing quests more than once had me run through the initial quest starting dialogue again. And there's a setting for having the camera fixed behind the player, which didn't work for me. If it didn't work why would you leave it as an option in the settings? For no discernible reason the dialogue text is small and not super distinctive against the background, I found myself squinting. Combat (shooting magical unicorn beams at enemies) feels chaotic, and some of the minigames were terrible - skip the horse trying to sell you on their "obstacle course", that's a scam artist (/jk, I just hated the minigames offered by that NPC especially, and the game would not let me back out without finishing once I had started). I would recommend this only to someone excited about being a unicorn, and even then with the mentioned caveats. While there were frustrations with this game, I still had fun with it, and don't regret getting it on a 75% sale, that felt like a good deal despite my complaints. Overall however I would say this game is lacking in too many aspects for me to give it a thumbs up, and the raving reviews raised my expectations too high for what it is.
Bought because Jello and his friends voice act this game and I was curious, ended up seriously loving it!! It was so fun and enjoyable, and I loved just running around and uncovering this mystery. I hope you expand this universe more someday, because I would LOVE to see more of this universe!!
This is art. I mean that literally—this is why I want to make games. The reasons behind why this game was created and the way it looks, the overwhelming passion pouring out of the screen, is melting my heart. And I mean every word of it, with no irony or sarcasm whatsoever. <3
Do you ever wake up and feel that you’re no longer actually on Earth, but on Unicorn Island? No? Oh, uh, me neither. I went into this game with low expectations. It looked fun and goofy, was on sale for $2.50, reviews said it had pretty good lore and I figured “Meh, why not?”. Throughout playing, I was so pleasantly surprised with this game. Over and over again. The horse/unicorn movement and animation was surprisingly good and fluid. The dialogue and voice acting met expectations set in the trailer, and gave life to the game that would have felt much emptier without. The graphics won’t knock your socks off, but they’re charming. The abilities/spells are honestly pretty fun. And yes, the *lore*. I listened to every book I found while traversing the world, and it made gameplay absolutely worth it. There was history, mystery, legends, and good parallels drawn to real-life (very general) social and political issues, with just the right amount of quips to keep things light. Enough to pull in and intrigue my adult brain, while also being plenty safe to play with young kids, which it seems some folks have done. As far as drawbacks go, controller support is pretty clunky. But as you gain abilities that allow you to levitate, jump higher, run faster or double jump, movement becomes easier and faster. I’d love if sprint could be a left stick press toggle on/off instead of requiring you to hold down on the left stick. The UI stays clunky (such as holding down the scroll bar on a book with X/A, and pulling down on the right stick to scroll down a book’s length text), but I mostly got used to it over time. It’d be nicer if you could hover over the scroll bar or the text and then pull down/up on the stick to scroll, or if they made the books just pages you could flip left and right through. Changes like these could also make the game more accessible. I agree with other reviews that the ending felt pretty rushed. Which was a bummer, because I really loved the world that was being built through the lore. It felt like just as you accessed some of the cooler and more mysterious parts of the game, it fell off and just ended. It left me with a lot of questions, like
what’s with the Estranged Rabbit? How does he know me and what was I doing in the void for 20 years? What the heck is going on with the tiny castle/Purple Palace? Why do the Purple Palace door, Unicorn Island tower door, and cave door all have green “V” symbols above them? What is the old village and what upgrades were we supposed to make to it with the NPC building unicorn? Why can Trixonomy travel to the void? What’s the huge portal-looking structure on the otherwise empty little island between the two bridges? Why can’t I play PT’s other two mini games? :’( And what actually happened to the Unicorn Kingdom??
Some of my unanswered questions could be things that I missed, although I combed through the map pretty thoroughly and experimented quite a bit to try and figure some things out. Either way, there definitely feel to be some plot holes. There were various bugs throughout the game, but nothing entirely broken. Earlier dialogue with NPCs kept coming up for quests that I had already completed. I needed to redo one quest because it wouldn’t give me the dialogue to formally finish the quest after I had completed the tasks the first time. Minor text errors. I would absolutely love and be seated for a sequel/secondary chapter to this game, although it appears the last bug fix was in 2022, so I’m assuming further updates and new content won’t happen. Despite my lasting questions and bummer over the game’s quick ending and many loose threads, it was more than worth the $2.50 I paid for it, and I gladly would have paid $5 for it. I’d pay the full $10 price just to support the devs, and pretty-please for a follow up game haha. If you’d enjoy killing a few hours running and flying around as a unicorn, delving into a light mystery, solving goofy riddles, or even re-enacting Cloudy With A Chance of Meatballs, with unicorns… I definitely recommend this one. :)
