TL;DR: Only recommended to those who enjoy aircrafts and don't mind really "anime"-esque or fairy tale writing. The writers clearly put thought into one route, and hardly any to some of the other ones, which is really unfortunate with the amount of boring world building there is. Art and music are overall good, but sometimes the music doesn't fit the vibes for certain scenes and the art is a little inconsistent in either quality or detail. So many ideas that were introduced seemed underutilized or not executed properly, in my opinion. The characters are pretty boring without much to them, and the writing seems forced a lot of the time. FULL REVIEW: I haven't finished this yet at the time of this initial review and I'll work towards doing so because I'm a completionist like that, but there are just so many things about this visual novel that compelled me to already make this. There's a couple things I'll note about my experience with this game. At this point in time, I have the 18+ patch applied and I've only completed one route and am currently about halfway through my second one, but it's way to hard to stay interested. The art is pretty good for the most part, but the music only fits half the time. The character designs are great, but some of the CG seems really odd and does not match the rest. To be more specific on that, it could just be me but I feel like some characters just look randomly wider in the CGs than their normal sprites are and the skin tones are inconsistent. The music is fitting for the general setting of the game, but there isn't enough variety to fit the setting for certain scenes, so the vibes for them become off. This visual novel revolves around fighter planes, which sounds cool in theory but it gets old real quick. Most of the exposition around the planes and its world building is just boring. I like the idea of having Fairy Fight competitions, but it feels so underutilized and not well executed. The characters so far have been pretty dry with classic tropes without any personality that should give me a reason to care about them. They have the most one-dimensional personalities, so when the writers give characters dialogue that doesn't fit that character, it feels extremely forced. I feel the common route is really lacking in reasons and enough exposition of characters for the reader to choose to do any of the routes and they have to just jump in and hope it'll be satisfying. The pacing feels so off in so many places, with a decent amount of the story being rather predictable, leaving no real suspense. It's like the writers took too many steps to accomplish the wrong things, and not enough in the ones that need them the most. I also really don't like the lack of visuals for Fairy Fights because they should be exciting, but I'm staring at the same 3 images with hardly any effects to convey that and there's just some lame dialogue plaster onto them. The protagonist doesn't have any redeeming qualities to him. He is not cool or interesting in any capacity, nor does he have any actual personality, which is really demotivating as the player seeing things from his perspective. Any conflict that comes up feels ridiculously forced most of the time and really unnatural, as if the writers do not know how to properly create that conflict and segue into it. Now I'll touch on some things that are kind of spoilers, but they don't really reveal too much so read at your own risk.
The writing is trying so hard to suggest that this Fairy Fight team with the protagonist is supposed to be some incongruous bunch, that trains so hard to find a way to mesh together. This is done in the most anime way possible with some of their opponents having big egos, but it doesn't make sense for them to have egos. It's the most make-believe cliche writing I have ever seen and any conflict they tried to put in, feels so overshadowed by how cliche they overcome any adversity.
With the 18+ patch applied, I couldn't exactly say it's light-hearted. The general story and writing is pretty light-hearted but the characters will crack some adult humor out of nowhere. The jokes feel like they last so long and just pop up whenever, with the tone being changed abruptly. The h-scenes last forever and just keep going forever, which is really weird and feels more like they're trying to get it out of the way instead of finding the best places to put them. If you care about aircrafts, then go nuts with this. If you do not but like cliche writing and don't mind really basic characters, by all means get this. However, there is no way I could recommend this to a general audience and say it's good. The writing heavily relies on some form of melodrama, which is not well executed, with the most dreamy fairy tale scenarios. There are too many things that are conveniently happening. If it wasn't for this using adult content the way it does, I would recommend it as a good story for adolescents and that's it. The highest I would rate this overall is a 4/10. EDIT: I've now completed this and I still stand by most of what I said initially. Not every conflict had a fairy tale solution, and I'm very glad that is the case, but it clearly shows there is favoritism in this game for a specific character by the writers. I would say that there is only one character's route that made this experience close enough to worth it, but it is still overall not good. Because of this reason, I would recommend this as a one and done, and it is a waste of time to do the rest. I noticed a lot of small inconsistencies with the text where sometimes the protagonist's thoughts would randomly be in quotes when it didn't need to be and it would have their name there occasionally, but most of the time that isn't the case. There are more typos, like misspellings or missing punctuation, than there should be in a localization or finished product in general. Mistakes are bound to happen and slip through the cracks, but there were more than there should be for a visual novel. A minor setback is the ending of each route is also not skippable, which is really annoying for those wanting to complete the entire game. Trying to do the whole thing requires one to be interested in aircrafts, otherwise it'll just be really boring.
Very cool story about planes. I wasn't a fan of Nahoko's route but the rest were good especially Kazusa's. Would recommend.
Steam Deck Experience: Playable
You'll want to use mouse controls or the touch screen. Just finished the game with Mimari's route. That's by far the most wholesome route. I really liked this visual novel. It was good all around. I thought all the cool planes was a nice touch. I wouldn't call myself a aviation nerd, but seeing all those planes wrapped up into a VN really grabbed my interest more than most novels. The soundtrack was great and the visuals were clean. I greatly regret applying the R18 patch. It really ruined the innocence of the story for me and I actually ended up skipping through those scenes as fast as my potato PC could. I know it's my own damn fault though.
Have to say, I was a little dissapointed that Saiko did have a route.. But with Nahoko route I'm more than satisfied, thank you for giving me the ending I was hoping for.
