Umamusume: Pretty Derby

Me encanta todo de Opera O. Estoy totalmente encantado de su personaje. Su diseño me vuelve loco. El pelo anaranjado con mechas rubias, su mirada y esa ropa tan elegante con capa le quedan increíble. Es hermosa y tiene una presencia que te atrapa al tiro. Su forma de ser me fascina. Es súper teatrera y dramática, y amo esa confianza ciega que se tiene. Puede parecer egocéntrica, pero en el fondo tiene un carisma gigante y un corazón enorme. Me encanta que se entregue por completo a su papel de reina, sin importarle nada.

Cygames have gotten a long way since their debut Rage of Bahamut in 2011. I worked for a competing mobile game company in Japan at the time so I became more familiar with their CCG than I perhaps had wanted, but it made me keenly aware of the strength and ambition that resided in Cygames. I've kept an eye on their games ever since. Umamusume: Pretty Derby is a quintessential otaku-game. It has pretty anime girls that straddles the line between being horses and idols. It's such a bizarre concept its no wonder it took off. Just the mere idea of 'horse-girls' is memorable. I downloaded the game on my phone when it became available in the west, but could not get into it since I've never been into mobile games as a gamer. So this was my first proper dive into the game and the IP. It's a wild and charming ride! Umamusume: Pretty Derby comes out of the gate swinging. There is a lot to take in at once. It's hard to not get overwhelmed. It helps if you are somewhat familiar with Asian gatcha games. An interesting point is that Cygames decided to keep the portrait aspect ratio from mobile even on PC. It's odd how half of the screen is nothing but a static menu, but since all of it has the Cygames quality it kind of works. I really dont have any more time or mental capacity to take on another gatcha at the moment so I knew I would not drill that deep when starting the game. My mind was toggled to make it another case study game for NPR visuals and anime 3D character models. And for that I already knew Cygames would not disappoint. At first I was a little bit surprised that the 3D characters did not have the same crisp and painterly quality that the characters from Little Noah: Scion of Paradise or Granblue Fantasy: Relink had. I was under the assumption Cygames had used their proprietary game engines Mist Engine or Platinum Engine for Umamusume: Pretty Derby. Those in-house engines were not developed specifically for mobile so it is no wonder that Cygames chose to use Unity for this game. It does however come with a cost, Umamusume: Pretty Derby does not look as good as Cygames previous output. They just dont have as much control over the rendering as they've had in their own engines. That being said, Umamusume: Pretty Derby is not an ugly game. It's just that this is Cygames we're talking about. If you want to see a top tier NPR ASG (anime-style game) then look no further than Granblue Fantasy: Relink! Judging by the models, shaders, textures and animations of the 3D characters and knowing this game was predominatly made for mobile, with all the constraints that means, its clear to see this is made by professionals. Between the sheer amount of character animation which is impacting different hairstyles and clothes, all which have unique rigs and animation, it makes for a massive character customization system. Very few game companies in the world are able to pull off that production pipeline for a NPR ASG of this commercial level. Beyond the 3D characters I did not poke that much deeper. The 3D environments are very simple and more often than not the backgrounds are hand-drawn illustrations similar to anime backgrounds, which certainly brings charm and richness to the experience. Cygames with their +3K headcount have their own anime studio so its no wonder they can add some top-notch 2D art to the game. Gameplay-wise I did some races, embarked on a bunch of lifesim events, trained some of my horse-girls and got lost in the flurry of nested menus. It feels like I've barely scratched the surface and I must admit the game feels quite overwhelming. At the same time it is a very charming expereince. It's easy to fall in love with this quirky IP with its characters and world. My plan is to put a pin in it for now and see if I can track down the anime instead.
