Ultimate MMA, developed by Anton Pushkarev and published by gridmaniac, is an earnest but uneven attempt to bring mixed martial arts to PC audiences through an indie lens. In a genre largely dominated by console-focused franchises, Ultimate MMA positions itself as a customizable, accessible fighting game that lets players create their own fighters, learn a wide range of strikes, and compete in tournament-style bouts. From the outset, the game’s ambition is clear: it wants to capture the appeal of MMA while remaining approachable and affordable, even if that means simplifying or omitting certain aspects of the sport. One of the game’s strongest elements is its character creation and personalization system. Players are given a wide range of options to shape their fighters’ appearance, including body type, facial features, hairstyles, tattoos, and general presentation. This level of cosmetic freedom is notable for a small-scale fighting game and helps establish a sense of ownership over your character. Progression is also tied to unlocking new attacks and combinations, with dozens of punches, kicks, and special strikes becoming available as you advance through tournaments. This gives a tangible sense of growth, as your fighter gradually becomes more versatile and visually distinct. Combat itself focuses heavily on striking, drawing from boxing and kickboxing more than from the full spectrum of mixed martial arts. Fights are fast-paced and rely on chaining attacks together while managing stamina, positioning, and timing. While the number of available strikes suggests depth, the actual feel of combat can be inconsistent. Inputs often favor rapid button presses rather than deliberate, tactical decision-making, and the absence of grappling, clinch work, or ground fighting significantly limits the game’s claim to being a true MMA experience. As a result, Ultimate MMA often feels closer to a basic stand-up fighting game than a holistic representation of the sport. This mechanical simplicity can be a double-edged sword. On one hand, it makes the game easy to pick up, especially for players unfamiliar with complex fighting systems. On the other, it leads to repetition over time, as many matches play out in similar ways regardless of opponent. Animations and hit detection can feel rough, and some players may notice a lack of responsiveness or polish during exchanges, which undermines the intensity that MMA is known for. These rough edges are among the most commonly cited frustrations and contribute to the game’s mixed reception. In terms of modes and structure, Ultimate MMA offers a fairly limited selection. Tournament play and quick matches form the core of the experience, with local multiplayer supported through Steam’s Remote Play Together feature. While this allows for casual bouts with friends, the lack of a deeper career mode, ranked progression, or dedicated online matchmaking limits long-term engagement. There is little narrative framing or contextual buildup, making the journey feel more like a sequence of isolated fights than a cohesive climb through the MMA world. Visually, the game reflects its indie origins. Arenas and fighter models are functional but basic, with animations that prioritize clarity over realism or spectacle. Presentation does not aim for broadcast-style flair or cinematic drama, instead delivering a straightforward fighting game aesthetic. While this simplicity keeps system requirements low and performance stable, it also reinforces the sense that Ultimate MMA is more of a passion project than a polished commercial product. Ultimately, Ultimate MMA is best viewed as a niche, experimental entry rather than a definitive MMA title. Its strengths lie in fighter customization, accessible controls, and the simple novelty of having a PC-based MMA-style game to play. However, its lack of grappling mechanics, shallow combat depth, limited modes, and rough execution prevent it from fully realizing its ambitions. For players curious about indie fighting games or looking for a lightweight, customizable brawler to enjoy casually with friends, it can offer some enjoyment. Those seeking a deep, authentic, and refined MMA simulation, however, are likely to find that Ultimate MMA falls short of its name. Rating: 5/10
for a basic striking game it's ok but it's no mma no form of grappling, submission or ground striking.
