*Ukraine War Stories*, developed and published by Starni Games, is an experience that deliberately resists being categorized as conventional entertainment. Rather than presenting war through the familiar lenses of strategy, combat, or heroism, it focuses on the quieter, more harrowing reality of civilian survival during the Russian invasion of Ukraine. The game unfolds as a collection of interactive narratives inspired by real testimonies, placing players in the roles of ordinary people caught in extraordinary and dangerous circumstances. This perspective alone sets it apart, shifting the emphasis from action to human vulnerability and moral uncertainty. The structure is built around several self-contained stories, each depicting a different scenario drawn from real locations affected during the early stages of the conflict. Instead of dramatizing events for spectacle, the writing maintains a grounded and often restrained tone, allowing the situations themselves to carry emotional weight. Players are frequently asked to make decisions under pressure—whether to trust strangers, how to respond to armed soldiers, or how to prioritize safety over dignity. These choices rarely feel empowering; instead, they highlight the lack of control civilians often experience in war zones. The game’s strength lies in how it frames these moments not as branching paths toward victory, but as reflections of difficult, sometimes tragic realities. Mechanically, the experience is intentionally minimalistic. It follows a visual novel format, relying on dialogue, internal monologues, and decision points rather than complex systems or gameplay loops. This simplicity serves a purpose: it keeps the focus firmly on the narrative and the emotional consequences of each choice. There are multiple endings for each scenario, but replaying them doesn’t feel like chasing alternative outcomes for completion’s sake. Instead, it reinforces the idea that small decisions can lead to vastly different—and often equally grim—results. The lack of traditional gameplay depth may disappoint some players, but it aligns closely with the project’s intent as a narrative-driven experience. One of the most impactful elements of *Ukraine War Stories* is its sense of authenticity. The developers, working from within Ukraine, drew from real accounts and lived experiences, which lends the stories a level of immediacy that is difficult to replicate. The inclusion of real-world imagery alongside stylized visuals further grounds the narrative, creating a stark contrast between the game’s presentation and the reality it represents. This approach makes the experience emotionally heavy, sometimes uncomfortably so, as it refuses to soften or distance the player from the subject matter. At the same time, the game’s focus on realism and brevity introduces certain limitations. Each story is relatively short, and while the branching structure adds some replay value, the overall content is limited in scope. There is little in the way of long-term progression or mechanical variety, which means its appeal is largely confined to its narrative impact. Additionally, its subject matter makes it difficult to approach casually; this is not a game designed for repeated sessions or light engagement, but rather one that is meant to be experienced thoughtfully, perhaps even once. Despite these constraints, *Ukraine War Stories* succeeds in delivering something that few games attempt. It uses interactivity not to entertain in the traditional sense, but to foster empathy and understanding. By placing players in situations where there are no easy answers, it encourages reflection on the human cost of conflict in a way that passive media often cannot. It is less about winning or losing and more about bearing witness to stories that might otherwise feel distant or abstract. In the end, *Ukraine War Stories* stands as a compelling example of how games can function as a medium for real-world storytelling. It may not satisfy those looking for deep mechanics or extended playtime, but it offers something arguably more meaningful—a direct, human perspective on war that lingers long after the experience ends. Its impact lies not in its complexity, but in its sincerity and its willingness to confront difficult truths without embellishment. Rating: 8/10
Help a family to survive the war and escape to a (currently) safer town! This game's giving a really shocking insight of the beginning of the Ukraine war and therefore you are able to imagine, that the mentioned topics are very dark and traumatic ones. Unlike many other visual novels this one really feels like an actual game, because depending on your decisions an old man (protagonist) lives or dies. Don't give up hope, if you wish to win this game.
