"Twilight Syndicate" is a mediocre attempt to make a side scrolling "film noir" detective story from Brazil. The plot follows a cop in Interpol chasing criminals, which involves gathering clues, clicking around on the screen, and trying to find a big bad guy called "The Gentleman". Well, I'm spooked. The quality is particularly poor and the visuals are an eyesore. There's an overwhelming amount of mediocre Visual Novel/E-book style cutscenes in this game. The developers failed one of the most basic, fundamental requirements of game design.. "Show, don't tell." So you'll spend a huge amount of time not playing the game, but clicking through endless lines of poorly written VN text cutscenes because the developers couldn't work out how to relate their narrative through the game mechanics, and decided instead it would be better to compete with reading a book for your time. We're here to play games, not read through hours of garbage intersituals. Your gaming rig is not a Kindle. This features really godawful pixelcrap "art" instead of real graphics. It's hard to say if this was because the developer didn't have the skill to do the job of creating 3D visuals, or couldn't afford to hire someone who does, but it also doesn't matter. What matters is that this looks much worse than most other games because of that decision, and that's a major deterrent to gamers. Games like Terraria and Stardew Valley succeeded despite the bad graphics, not because of them. This was made with the godawful "GameMaker Studio" construction kit/toolset, which is popular amongst amateur developers because it handholds you through making really crap 2D games that you can publish for $100 on Steam Direct. This lets you pat yourself on the back for pretending to be a real game developer, which explains why GameMaker Studio is responsible for so much ignored garbage on Steam. GameMaker Studio has never really been used to make a truly successful game, but that doesn't stop people from trying and failing. It's a particularly bad game engine that can only be used for making low quality 2D products. Like this. You can't make a silk purse out of a sow's ear, as the old saying goes. Another reason this particular game wasn't successful. Now on to pricing and value for gamers. This is "free" enough (not every "free" game in the "free" section is truly free, there's usually some hidden price tag), at least you won't be expected to spend any more money after you download this, but just because something is free doesn't mean it's good, and the cost of a game is more than just financial, your time is valuable too. Despite having no up-front cost, this failed to appeal to the 130 million+ gamers on Steam. SteamDB shows this peaked at only 10 concurrent players... this is a dismal public reception. This was so bad they couldn't even give it away. Since free games don't contribute to your game collector badge and other profile stuff, is this a worthwhile addition to your Steam library? I can't recommend this. It may not be the worst thing on Steam but it's far from the best, and PC gamers have far better options for spending their time. Remember what I often say... if you don't agree with what I've said about this game, by all means add it to your library and play it. My review is just here to inform your decision, and if you think I was wrong and you downloaded the game, then I've done what I really wanted to do... inform your decision.

Twilight Syndicate is an indie detective adventure developed by Game Nacional and published by Game Nacional Publisher that places players in the role of a rookie Interpol investigator drawn into a complex international conspiracy. Designed as a narrative-driven investigative game, it focuses less on action and more on observation, deduction, and puzzle solving. The experience revolves around uncovering clues, following leads, and slowly piecing together the operations of a mysterious criminal organization known as the Twilight Syndicate. By placing players at the center of an unfolding investigation, the game attempts to capture the tension and curiosity that define classic detective stories. The story begins when the protagonist receives a cryptic piece of information connected to a recent criminal incident. What initially appears to be a minor clue soon reveals itself as the first thread in a much larger web of criminal activity. As a newly recruited Interpol agent, the player must investigate a series of interconnected cases, each revealing more about the syndicate’s influence and reach. Along the way, players encounter suspects, informants, and potential allies, each of whom contributes fragments of information that help uncover the truth behind the organization’s operations. Central to the narrative is the mysterious figure known as “The Gentleman,” a shadowy mastermind believed to be orchestrating the syndicate’s crimes. Throughout the investigation, this character’s presence looms in the background as players uncover evidence suggesting that he has been carefully manipulating events from behind the scenes. The gradual process of tracking down this elusive criminal becomes one of the primary motivations that drives the story forward. While the narrative remains relatively straightforward, the unfolding mystery gives players a clear objective and a sense of progression. Gameplay in Twilight Syndicate is structured around exploration and clue gathering. Each investigation leads players to new environments where they must examine objects, search for hidden details, and interact with characters who may possess valuable information. Instead of relying on fast reflexes or combat mechanics, the game encourages players to carefully study their surroundings and think about how different pieces of evidence connect with one another. This slower pace emphasizes the role of the player as a detective who must analyze situations rather than simply react to them. Many of the game’s puzzles revolve around interpreting clues discovered during investigations. Players may be required to identify key objects within a scene, solve logical puzzles that unlock new information, or make decisions about how to proceed with an investigation. These tasks are designed to simulate the analytical work involved in solving crimes. Although the puzzles are generally accessible and not overly complex, they help create the feeling of gradually uncovering the truth through careful observation. The campaign mode ties these investigations together into a larger narrative. Each case contributes additional pieces of information about the Twilight Syndicate, slowly revealing the scale of the organization’s activities. As the investigation progresses, the player begins to understand how the various crimes and suspects are connected. This structure allows the story to build momentum as the player moves from one case to the next, bringing them closer to identifying the true nature of the syndicate and its leader. Visually, the game adopts a straightforward presentation that focuses on functionality rather than elaborate graphics. The environments are designed to serve as investigative spaces where players can explore and search for clues. While the graphical style is relatively simple, it supports the gameplay by clearly highlighting interactive elements within each scene. Characters are presented through dialogue interfaces that guide players through conversations and narrative developments. The sound design is similarly understated. Background music provides a subtle atmosphere during exploration and investigation, helping establish a quiet sense of tension without overwhelming the player. Sound cues often accompany important discoveries, signaling that a new clue has been uncovered or a puzzle has been solved. This restrained approach to audio reinforces the methodical tone of the gameplay. One of the advantages of Twilight Syndicate is its accessibility. As a free-to-play title with relatively low system requirements, the game is easy for many players to try without a significant investment. Its straightforward controls and clear objectives make it approachable even for players who may not have much experience with adventure or detective games. However, the game’s modest scale also results in certain limitations. The overall structure of the missions can feel repetitive after extended play, as many investigations follow a similar pattern of searching environments and solving small puzzles. The narrative, while interesting, remains relatively simple and may not provide the level of complexity or branching storytelling that some players expect from detective games. Another drawback is that the game’s mechanics remain fairly basic throughout the experience. While the investigative tasks are enjoyable in short bursts, they do not evolve significantly over time. Players looking for deeper gameplay systems or more elaborate puzzle design may find the experience somewhat limited. Despite these shortcomings, Twilight Syndicate still manages to deliver a satisfying detective-themed adventure within its scope. The process of exploring locations, gathering clues, and uncovering the secrets of the syndicate creates a sense of curiosity that encourages players to continue pushing forward in the investigation. The narrative, though simple, effectively supports the gameplay by providing a clear goal and a mysterious antagonist to pursue. Overall, Twilight Syndicate is a modest but engaging indie detective game that captures the essence of investigative storytelling. While it lacks the depth and polish of larger mystery titles, it succeeds in offering a focused experience centered on deduction and exploration. Players who enjoy unraveling mysteries and solving puzzles may find the game to be a worthwhile and entertaining journey through a web of international crime. Rating: 6/10
Tried to solve a case “randomly” - didn’t work. Tried paying attention - got hooked. Great sign when a game rewards analysis instead of mindless clicking
